A/N: Hello all. Thank you and welcome to my first Twilight story. I’ve been wanting to convert my idea into a story for a long time now, but alas, I never had enough guts to do it. Until last night, when I figured that, if you guys didn’t like it, at least I tried, right? So, that being said, I hope you all enjoy my story and I hope I don’t butcher the beautiful characters that Ms. Meyer has created. I shall try my best not to.
Disclaimer: I do not own anything. It all belongs to Stephenie Meyer, but something tells me you already know that. But if you didn’t, I just wanted to make it clear. The only thing I can take credit for is the plot for this story, as lame as it may be.
Enjoy!
The itch was incurable at times; it was impossible to ignore, no matter how hard I resisted. Sometimes, I was a naughty girl and scratched. But lately, I’ve been getting caught in the act, never fully satisfying the itch. Of course, I got tidbits of information, but they were never enough to sate the hunger for more.
“Please?”
“No. I told you the first time, I’m not going to have this ruined for you.”
“What’s there to ruin? You know I hate surprises.” I argued.
He glanced at me out of the corner of his golden eyes. “Just because you don’t like surprises doesn’t mean that you aren’t going to get them throughout your life.”
“I’m going to find out, you know, so it’s pointless to try and hide it from me.” I said pointedly.
He shook his head, a smug grin tugging at the corners of his lips. “Not this time, you won’t.”
“That’s what you said last time, yet I still found out.”
His hands stiffened on the steering wheel. “Last time I made the mistake of telling someone I shouldn’t have told. So last time doesn’t count.“
“Why doesn’t it count?" I demanded.
“Because, you would’ve never have found out about it if Jessica hadn’t open her big trap.“ Edward said darkly under his breath. Why he had told Jessica was beyond me, but I assumed it was because he needed help thinking of a gift or something of the sort. He could’ve asked Alice, but he probably figured that I would wrestle it out of her. Figuratively, of course.
“Well that’s what you get for telling someone like Jessica, who happens to have one of the biggest mouths in history, a secret.”
“So you’re saying that I deserved it?”
“In a way, yes. Because you knew then what you know now.”
“And exactly what would that be?”
“I. Hate. Surprises.” I replied through gritted teeth.
“Not this one you won’t.” He countered in a matter-of-factly voice.
I made a face and he laughed joyously. He knew that I hated not knowing what was going on, which made the current situation all the more enjoyable for him. “It’s not funny, Edward.” I grumbled under my breath, moving my eyes away from him and staring out the window.
“You’re right,” Edward said, sighing heavily, sounding genuinely sorry for laughing at me. I turned my head to look at him and a smile tugged at the corners of my lips. His eyes met mine. There was amusement dancing merrily in the deep liquid topaz depths and, before I had to chance to open my mouth, he added, “It’s hilarious.”
“UGH!” I groaned furiously, pressing my back firmly into the seat and folding my arms over my chest moodily. This reaction only evoked another round of laughter from Edward. Had he been human, he would’ve lost control of the wheel and strayed into the other lane, where a Toyota was quickly approaching, that was how hard he was laughing. “I really don’t see what’s so damn funny.” I snapped, my eyes riveted to the road ahead of me.
His laughter dissolved into a low chuckle, until it vanished all together. Edward turned his face toward me. “Honestly, Bella, I was just joking. You’re always telling me that I should lighten up.”
“You picked an impeccable time to develop a sense of humor.” I bit out angrily, pouting like a small child who didn’t get their way.
I glared at him and turned away from him. A sigh escaped him and his hand reached for mine. I jerked it away and tucked it under my elbow, but he gently pulled it free and held it in his glacial grasp. “Bella…” He rubbed a circle on the back of my hand with his thumb.
When he saw that it wasn’t working, Edward brought my hand to his lips, placing a few feather light kisses on it. “Bella…” He tried again. I didn’t say a word as he flipped my hand over and kissed the inside of my wrist. A shiver racked through my body and I glanced at him out of the corner of my eye. “I’m sorry.” This time, the sincerity of his apology reached his ocher optics and I found my resolve crumbling. It was pointless to try and stay mad at Edward; especially when his eyes did that unfair smoldering thing.
I sighed softly and threaded my fingers through his. “Apology accepted.”
He smiled at me and kissed the back of my hand, his icy lips lingering on my skin longer than normal. My heart rate sped up and his grin widened. My reactions always satisfied him.
“But I’m going to find out. Even if I have to milk the information out of Alice.”
That wiped the smile right off his beautiful face. He glared at me, his golden eyes burning holes in my chocolate brown orbs and his lip curled back slightly. “You wouldn’t.”
“Oh, but I would.“ It was my turn to laugh now. And oh, how joyously I did. He knew that if I persuaded Alice enough, I could get her to spill the secret. “And if worst comes to worst, there’s always Emmett.” That boy -- er, vampire -- was even more willing to hand information over to me than Alice was. I didn’t even have to put much effort into the persuasion process either.
Edward glowered at me and he pressed down harder on the accelerator. The car lurched forward silently and I gripped onto the bottom of the seat. I was never comfortable with driving fast, despite the fact a speed demon was usually my chauffeur. I watched in amusement as his pale lips moved too quickly for me to make out what he was saying. By the furrow of his brow, he didn’t look very happy. No, he didn’t look very happy at all because he knew that if I chose my actions carefully that I would find out. And I could tell he was dead set against that.
I sighed in annoyance, frustrated by the silence as well as the fact I was still in the dark. “The least you could do is give me a clue.”
“No.” Edward said instantaneously.
“Please!” I whined. I grabbed his hand, which I had dropped somewhere back along the road.
He shook his head, a few strands of bronze hair falling into his gorgeous eyes. “Please Bella, for once, just try not to be so opposed to this. I put a lot of hard work into it.” Edward locked gazes with me, the intensity of his stare causing me to shift around in the leather seat.
How could I say no to him? Not only were his eyes doing that unfair smoldering thing, but the desperation in his velvet voice was hard to handle. It hit me like a load of bricks, leaving me winded. I licked my dry lips and tried to think of something to say, but I couldn’t. There were no more witty remarks left in me, not when they had all been knocked out by the look in his eyes. I hung my head and released a deep breath, “Fine.”
“Fine?” He repeated uncertainly, attempting to decipher exactly what I was trying to communicate.
“I won’t be so opposed to this.” I clarified. “I’ll try to remain in the positive mindset.”
He sent me a doubtful look. “Do you promise?”
I resisted the urge to sigh and nodded my head. “I promise.” I whispered, pushing the stray tendrils of auburn hair away from his forehead. The funny thing was that I actually meant it. I wanted to remain optimistic for him. Really, I did, but it was rather difficult when the majority of surprises were either ruined by a blabber mouth of a friend or took a turn for the worst right when it was getting to the exciting part. Case in point my eighteenth birthday party. I shuddered involuntarily and pushed the memory away. No need to focus on the negative now.
Edward smiled in satisfaction and reached for my hand again. Our fingers meshed together instinctively and he gave my small hand a tight squeeze. The chill that radiated off his flesh melted the warmth of my palm, yet I didn’t pull away. I couldn’t pull away. I didn’t want to. Not ever.
This time, the silence that settled between us wasn’t uncomfortable. Quite on the contrary, it was nice just to sit in the car with Edward, soaking in the scenery as it passed by….
Wait a minute.
I sat up in my seat and pressed my forehead against the tinted window, trying to sneak a peak at the outside world. Where were we going? It was obvious that he wasn’t taking me back to Charlie’s; we would’ve been there by now. So, if he wasn’t taking me home, then where was he taking me? The itch was burning, yet I refused to scratch it. I didn’t want to ask him where he was taking me in fear of him getting upset, as it might be part of the surprise. The scenery didn’t look familiar, but it didn’t help that we were traveling at nearly one hundred and fifteen miles per hour.
“Lead foot.” I muttered under my breath, pulling back from the window and settling back into my seat. My hand was still tucked securely in Edward’s.
“What was that?” Edward asked.
I rolled my eyes. “You heard what I said. I called you a lead foot.”
Edward laughed and leaned over, kissing my cheek with his wintry lips. A shiver swept over me quickly and I didn’t have to look at him to see that he was smiling.
“If you’d slow down for just one minute, then maybe I could figure out just where the heck you’re taking me.” I continued, glancing at him out the corner of my eyes to see if I was going to get an answer or not.
Much to my surprise, he supplied me with what I wanted. “I’m taking the long way back to the house.”
“There’s a long way?”
Edward chuckled, pressing my hand against his lips briefly. “If you haven’t noticed, we’ve been circling around town for the past hour.” It was weird how quickly time passed when I was with Edward.
“We have?” My mouth must’ve fallen open because he grinned like the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland at my expression.
“Would I lie to you?”
I sent him a doubtful look and he snickered. “I don’t know. For all I know, you could be trying to convince me that we’re headed back to your house, when in reality, we could be halfway to Salem!”
Edward laughed and squeezed my hand gently. “I promise I’m not lying to you.”
I believed him. “So will you at least tell me why we’re going back to your house?”
He shook his head. “Of course not. That’d ruin the surprise, wouldn’t it?”
I crossed my arms over my chest in annoyance. “Of course it would.” I muttered darkly under my breath. The itch was burning again, but I refused to scratch it, as I knew in a short while that my questions would be answered. Or, at least, I hoped they would.
A/N 2: Well, there's the chapter. I hope I didn't butcher the characters too badly. Did you enjoy it? Again, I hope you did. Reviews are always appreciated, as they give me feedback and let me know exactly what you guys think of the story. So, review!
