A Normal Night

It is a normal night out for Toph.

(It should be mentioned that an abnormal night includes waking up in the middle of the night to Sokka coming home drunk, or Sokka not being drunk at all. A normal night involved walking down to the nearest tavern/bar/inn/jail and dragging Sokka out by the ear.)

"Sokka," she said in what she hoped was a reasonable voice and not an angry one. "We have got to stop doing this."

"But we're having fun!" he slurred happily. He was currently half slung over Toph's back, and she was finding it harder to walk with his extra weight.

"No. You're having fun. I'm losing sleep. This does not make Toph happy."

"We must make Toph happy!" he cried loudly. Toph cringed. "How do we do this?"

"We could start by not getting drunk every night."

"That was—that was mean when you left me in the place…"

"You mean jail?"

"Yeah!" He hunched over to be level with her. "You left me there for days."

"Two," she reminded him. "For dancing naked. I'm blind and I couldn't stand it."

"Two days is long." He draped himself over her shoulder, and she grunted, trying not to let him fall. They walked like this for a few minutes.

"Toph," he said. "You're my friend."

"I'd have to be to stand this four times a week."

"No, that's not the point!" He tried to stand straight. In failing this, he stopped walking to fully concentrate.

"What are you doing?" Toph asked, exasperated. This was getting too much.

"Okay, stay with me on this one." He sat down and motioned for her to join him. She sighed. "You would be my friend no matter what?"

"Yes," she replied. "Can we go now?"

"Not yet. I need to tell you something." He pulled her closer. "It's a secret."

"Alright," she said. "But hurry up."

Sokka then leaned in and kissed her.

Toph did not know why she didn't go with her first instinct to push him away. She imagined anytime a guy would try to touch her, he would end up regretting it. But kissing Sokka… It didn't feel so bad. She even liked it. Just a little.

Sokka pulled away. "Don't tell anyone," he said, before promptly passing out.

It took Toph two full minutes and then some to realize she had to carry him home.

Honestly, she thought, as she attempted to heave him onto her shoulders, she didn't really mind.
