A/N: My first drabble, my first posted Naruto fic, and it was supposed to be my first attempt at angst, but it didn't quite come out as... angsty as I had hoped it would. -scowls- Anyway, I guess it's okay because I love WAFF so much more! (Not that there is any here...)

Summary: Sasuke watches the sunrise but awaits the night.

Title: The Sunrise

By Endless Rain

The sunrise-so warm, so inviting, so deceptive, so lying. But for once, the boy that sits on the hill overlooking Konohagakure with his current master (who is constantly prattling on about how they will one day destroy the place of their birth) isn't clenching his fists in anger at the day that is so inconsiderate of his feelings; he isn't scowling at the fact that life is moving continuously onwards, forgetting and leaving those that can't forget behind. For once, his eyes are completely empty. For once, there is no bitter feeling towards life pulsing through his veins. Life has broken him and left him behind with the other broken nobodies. And the boy accepts this because no one ever said that life was fair or nice or loving.

His friends say that they will rescue him. That they won't leave him trapped in the darkness, but they don't know. They could never understand that the boy they knew died long before he defected from his home village. They could never discern that he had died from internal bleeding of his heart and his soul. There is no more going back for him because to go back is rebirth, and rebirth is not possible in the real world.

But what can he do? The boy cannot tell his friends this because they don't want to listen. And if they did want to listen then they would respect his decision and leave him to finish severing his ties to life. They can stop the snake-the boy doesn't care about the ever-rambling snake at all-but if they were the friends that they claimed to be then they would leave him to die. Because that was the fate that Itachi had inscribed for him since the massacre of the Uchiha clan. Death is the fate of the avenger. And once that path is chosen, there is no going back.

So until that death comes, the boy will continue to stare at the horizon where that deceitfully tender sun continues to rise, watching with bated breath until that final dying sigh passes his lips and he will close his eyes and look on eternal night where at least there is no deception. Because the night never masks the loneliness it instills inside of souls as they are surrounded by darkness, and in that respect, night never lies.
