Above the Atmosphere

It's such a nice evening, above the atmosphere. Tawny shades of orange and dusty pink illuminating our sky, and the summer winds kissing our hair. It's the last day of summer before school starts again, but we're not worried about that because we have the tendency to drag things on forever. And when I say forever, I mean forever.

The warm grass tickles her cheeks as Kairi idly plucks another weed off the earth, and twirls it thoughtfully around her finger. Both young teenagers sitting on an abandoned field, enjoying their last minutes of sunshine. Soaking up one another's presence ever so discreetly.

"I can't believe Riku actually left to go do chores on the last day of summer." The boy next to her snorts, and Kairi rolls her purplish-blue eyes.

"Some people actually want to get things done Sora." Is her short reply, but she's smiling.

"Well you're still here with me, sitting here, doing absolutely nothing." Sora points out to her, perplexed.

"So?" With a quick flick of the wrist, the weed soars through the air, and disappears into the lush grass.

She's getting tired of sitting around, and carefully stretches her numb legs out while wiping her eyes, getting pollen all over on her face while doing so.

"It's getting late," Kairi says, studying the sunset to determine what time it is, and frowns.

"I've got to go home for dinner."

As graceful as a pixie, and only a rustle of pink fabric heard, she's up and ready to walk back home when a warm hand is placed onto her bare shoulder.

"Wait."

"Yeah?" She turns around calmly, but she can feel her right shoulder burning from his touch.

"Do you trust me?" His voice is serious, yet at the same time full of curiosity in the somewhat random question.

The auburn haired girl pauses for a tiny moment before deciding to answer his question seriously.

"Sure I trust you. You're one of my best friends," Kairi continues, "Besides, you promised me that you'd come back to Destiny Islands, and here you are. Gravity defying hair and all."

"Okay, so you trust me." Sora says, but before Kairi can turn around and walk away, he grabs her hand. A jolt of static.

"If you trust me then fall and let me catch you."

Kairi makes a face.

"Catch me? As in like, me falling backwards and trusting you to catch me in your arms?"

Sora nods, and that's when the laughter comes. Peals and peals of laughter come flying out of the girl's mouth, and it doesn't stop even after she starts clutching onto her stomach. She's laughing like somebody's told her that the Easter bunny is freaking real, and she's still one hundred percent radiant. At least that's what he thinks.

She's one heck of a girl.

The laughter eventually dies, but she's not done wiping her tears yet.

"Well are you going to do it or not?" Sora's getting impatient now, and Kairi can see that. Her grin widening with each and every second.

"Of course I'm not going to," Kairi laughs and looks at Sora with her mouth curved up in a teasing smile, "You might be the great keyblade 'master', but your arms still look pretty scrawny to me. I don't think you could handle the weight."

"Though you have grown taller." She adds thoughtfully before breaking into another fit of laughter. This time, not so adorable in Sora's eyes.

"Well these scrawny arms kicked some serious heartless butt!" Sora replied heatedly, cheeks flushed.

"Oh fine," Kairi gives up, but shoots the boy a reproachful look before walking about a meter in front of him, "If you really want me to. I need to get home anyway, and I don't need your whining."

So without another word, she shifts her weight onto the back of her heels, and spreads her arms wide into the air, freefalling into his arms. And it's Sora's turn to grin now. Turns out that his arms weren't so scrawny after all.

But why wasn't he letting go of her?

Kairi closes her eyes, dusky eyelashes brushing against her cheeks. Opens her eyes, and nope, he's still holding her in that awkward position.

"Sora…?" Her voice coming out far more timid than she would've liked it to sound.

"Fall."

"What?"

What in the world was he up to now?

"Fall." He repeats, and Kairi can't help but stare blankly into his eyes.

Blue holding onto blue.

"Fall for me Kairi."

She's stunned, flabbergasted, surprised, shocked, and a million other things, but all she does is close her eyes, and listen to her heart.

"You're so stupid Sora. I already have."

Dinner's the last thing on this girl's mind.

THE END.
