“Were we ever people?”

“We were human, once.”

They were trained, worn, dead.

“What are we now?”

Honed, sharp, useful.

“We are ninja.”

They were new, in a sort.

“What are ‘ninja’?”

They fought with unclouded eyes.

“We are ninja.”

They fought with no regret.

“What are they?”

They were not slaying humans.

“They are human.”

They were breaking weapons.

“Why do we still breathe?”

There was blood,

“We don’t.”

Blood on her face,

“Then what do we do?”

On her arms,

“We fight.”

---

Running from her open mouth,

“What about love?”

Slowly sliding down her ivory neck,

“What is ‘love’?”

Staining her breast,

“We are love.”

He had never found her more beautiful.

“We are?”

He took her,

“Yes.”

And held her,

“Are we ninja now?”

And made her his,

“No, we are human.”
