I’m Always Around
The words tumbled recklessly through Superman’s mind during the uncomfortable silence that followed Lois’s aversion to their kiss.
“ Richard is a good man, and you’ve been gone a long time.”
The female reporter never seemed to make this kind of speechless effect on him. In fact, it was usually the opposite; he leaving her without words, barely teetering on the brink of consciousness. Furthermore, Lois had hit a new low. Not only had she left him searching for just the right words, she had also hurt him on a deeper level than he had ever thought possible. Her honesty had hit him like a ton of bricks that even he could not carry.
“I know.” Was all he could mutter.
Tail between his legs, Superman turned to leave, knowing that he had fallen from that pedestal on which she had always held him. He had forever lost a place in her life. Lois had a lot of disappoint filling her years, which primarily revolved around her father. Now, despite himself, he had done the same. He abandoned her.
Lois could see the pain that grew in his eyes. At first, she wanted to run after him, throwing herself into his arms, and beg for forgiveness. Here he stood, just feet away from her pleading to be let back in her life, and she was denying him; Superman; her one and only true love; her fairytale; her destiny.
She panicked.
The fear of never seeing him again as more than a purple blur in the sky forced the only words she could muster up her throat and out of her mouth.
“Will I…see you around?” She choked out in desperation.
Hope grew in Superman’s chest like a warm burst.
“I’m always around.” He smiled. “ Goodnight Lois.”
Superman ascended into the abyss of the Metropolis night. He had hope, and that was just enough to keep him going. But, he had to come to the painful realization that she had truly moved on. He may not have lost a place in her life, but he had definitely lost a place in her heart.
Lois had to practically bite her tongue to keep from calling out to him. She had to remember that he was the one who had left. She couldn’t just allow him to fly, literally, back into her life and totally disregard her family. What would prevent him from forsaking her again? She was a different person than she was five years ago. She was a mother, and that meant she had to push herself out of the way for Jason, despite how she truly felt. She almost wanted to hate him for putting her in this position but part of her couldn’t.
If he hadn’t left I wouldn’t be in this predicament. I wouldn’t have… Lois stopped her train of thought. She didn’t know what she was saying. It’s not like I’m giving up on love. I have Richard.
He was there for her when her so-called savior wasn’t, and for that she couldn’t renounce what they had for the sake of a girlish fantasy. He was stability, and Superman was not.
