The year is 2012 and Austin reflects on what might have been. (Alternative ending in which he doesn't go after Sam). ONESHOT.
Disclaimer: I do not and never will own a Cinderella story or it's characters or Kelly Clarkson's Breakaway lyrics (great song)
Austin fiddled with the radio switch in his car until his favourite radio station crackled through the speakers.
"Time for a song folks! Here it is, the one you've been waiting for… Breakaway – Kelly Clarkson"
Austin leant forward to change the station in disgust but stopped abruptly when the lyrics began.
Grew up in a small town
And when the rain would fall down
I'd just stare out my window
A certain girl crept into Austin's mind.
Dreaming of what could be
And if I'd end up happy
I would break
She had such a hard time but I was too selfish to notice.
Trying hard to reach out
But when I tried to speak out
Felt like no-one could hear me
Oh Sam, I should have listened.
Wanted to belong here
But something felt so wrong here
So I'd break
I could break away
We belonged Sam… I just never realised it at the time.
I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly
I'll do what it takes 'till I touch the sky
Make a wish, take a chance, make a change
She had the courage to be who she wanted to be. I just wasn't strong enough to follow her. Take a chance. All it needed was one change.
Out of the darkness and into the sun
But I won't forget all the ones that I love
Has she forgotten me? I've never forgotten her.
Take a risk, take a chance, make a change
One risk. Not taken. One chance. Not taken. One change. Not made.
It's time for me to do the same.
Austin span round the Hummer, tyres screeching and, ignoring the blaring horns and angry drivers, headed back for the San Fernando Valley.
