Rated T. Action, angst, fluff.
Pairing: Harry/Bob A/N: Takes place after the series opener. Is part of the 'Caring is Sharing' universe. Each of these pieces will be complete by themselves, but part of a larger universe. Depending on where they happen in the universe the amount of slash will vary. For right now it is pre-slash.
Harry Dresden woke gradually from his prone position on the basement floor. The various candles and instruments of his summing were in disarray and a small pool of blood spread from the back of his head.
"What the hell hit me?"
"That would be Azrial." A familiar high-browed voice answered from the left of him. Since moving his body at all at that point wasn't a good idea Harry kept still.
"Who else were you expecting…Merlin?" Bob sneered, while moving directly into Harry's line of sight when it became evident that the wizard wasn't able to see him.
"Sarcasm is the lowest form of … What the hell happened to you?" Harry pulled his aching body up by his shaking arms, ignoring the sharp pain this caused in his head. "Since when are you see through?"
"Since now apparently."
"I seem to have put a bit too much of my magic into the incantation. What you see before you is the result of my rather selfless actions."
"A martyr you're not." Harry grumbled as he stood on shaking legs, leaning against the wall for support. "You're not even a sorcerer anymore if you want to get technical, so just what did you think you were doing taking on a demon?"
Bob was silently looking at Harry. His gaze both deep and somber. Just when Harry sucked in a breath in preparation for what was sure to be an important conversation Bob turned around and walked through the wall.
"Hey come back here! I wasn't through yet. Bob!"
Harry had just opened the basement door to go find Bob when the sorcerer reappeared suddenly right in front of him.
"Had he killed you I would have been trapped in my skull for god knows how long. I have come to enjoy my freedom, even if it only consists of this rather dreary apartment."
"Hey I took you to the park just last month." Harry interrupted the rather forlorn commentary, for some reason feeling guilty about Bob's living conditions. "This isn't supposed to be a vacation you know. Eternal bonds, lost powers, amends. This ringing any bells?"
"Beggars can't be choosers, I suppose." Bob concluded with a sigh, ignoring Harry's point completely. "Let us hope the bonds are indeed eternal as you so flippantly put it."
"What do you mean?"
"Meaning that ever since my foolhardy exercise in martyrdom I have been gradually dematerializing."
"You can't just dematerialize." Harry exclaimed sharply moving in closer to the other man. "You're one of the most powerful sorcerers who ever lived."
"As you just pointed out not anymore." Bob reminded him soberly as he began to fade from view.
"Just where do you think you're going? If you think you can run out in the middle of a conversation you've got another thing coming… If I have to physically drag you back from the afterlife I will and I promise you will regret it!"
There was no answer from his resident pain-in-the-ass talking skull. Instead of giving in to the despair that threatened to swallow him Harry walked to his bookshelf with a single-minded purpose. He was going to get Bob back.
