Irony
"Roxas," Axel whispered, placing a hand on the cheek of his best friend and lover, and idly tracing the shadows cast upon the handsome face by the wavering firelight, "Do you love me?"
"Oh yes, of course I do," the Key of Destiny replied earnestly.
"How much?"
Roxas paused for a moment, pondering how he could best answer the question. His love for the Flurry of Dancing Flames seemed intangible and impossible to describe. It was endless, like the ocean, and pure as fresh fallen snow. It was strong as steel, but as natural and comfortable as breathing. How could he comprehensibly convey to Axel the eternity of compassion resting within his non-existent heart.
Roxas opened and closed his mouth several times before finally settling on the appropriate words to use
"Axel, I love you like a bird loves the sky; like a fish loves the sea; like nobodies yearn for a heart."
"But some birds don't fly. Some fish have never seen the ocean. We nobodies may never receive hearts. Is that how you will love me? Occasionally, when it suits you?"
"No no no. My love for you is as wide as the forests; as beautiful as a flower; as mysterious as the moon."
"But, Roxas, trees and flowers die. Even the moon will abandon the night sky from time to time. Will your love die? Will you disappear from my life too?"
Roxas thought another moment, then he pulled Axel's hands to touch his lips and spoke, at last confident that his answer was right.
"Axel, my love for you transcends time. Were a thousand years to pass, were a thousand lives to pass, were we to be separated for eons and suddenly thrust back together again, even then would I love you."
Axel smiled and placed a gentle kiss to the lips of the most important person in his world. Irony, as it turned out, would be a crushing blow.
