"All systems on stand-by.” Dib adjusted his glasses, and then crossed his arms as he leaned against the back of his seat.

“Great! Now we can relax ‘til we get back to Lethedril. All that travel through hyperspace has worn me out.”

Dib nodded in agreement with his companion, Bennis, and rolled his chair back to his monitor keyboard, checking over the data. “So, what exactly are we planning to do with that… thing, Bennis?” He turned his chair again to face the ‘chief’ of his division. “You know…” Gesticulating, Dib made motions in the air with his hands in an attempt to explain. “…that thing that got stuck to our ship, during our trip from Elestas.”

“Bah, do I have to tell you? I’d end up telling everyone if I told you! We’ve got to be quiet about weird stuff like this.”

Elle turned her seat from her controls in excitement, her curiosity aroused by the conversation. “Oh, come on, Ben! Tell us!” she whined. “I wanna know! Do you really have to be so secretive?”

“Fine! You two are so pushy,” Bennis grunted, resignedly deciding to inform the other two of what they intended to do.

”What!?” Dib scowled. “Pushy? I’m not pushy!”

“Okay, whatever.” Bennis smirked, shaking his head at Dib before he continued. “I checked this wrist band; it’s an experiment from the K.E.I.A. Organization. I was thinking of dropping it off for them once we finish doing our job at Lethedril.”

“K.E.I.A. Organization!?! Are you insane? They work for the military!” Dib protested, glancing to the wrist band incredulously.

”Yeah, yeah, but you know it would be better to hand it over to them than have them chase us down for it.” Bennis grinned. “Besides, we might get rewarded.”

“What if they didn’t WANT it and threw it into space, Ben?” Kris glared at Bennis and then pushed himself out of his piloting seat, strolling toward the corridor. “I’m out. Heading to the Kitchen.” He turned his back to the others, stepping through the door leading from the bridge of the ship.

Elle jumped out of her seat. "I'm going, too. See you two later." She waved, and hastily ran after Kris, giving him a small kiss when she reached his side and looping her arm through his.

Dib raised an eyebrow at the couple as they retreated, and slid out of his seat as well.

"Where are you going? With them?" Bennis asked, pressing a button to set the ship on autopilot.

"No, I'm going to the Infirmary." Dib made his way to the door, which opened automatically as he reached it. "Just checking up on that… thing... since you won’t tell me anything else about it."

He left the room, frowning, and headed to the elevator. “They won’t reward us. They’ll kill us instead,” he grumbled. He sulkily kicked the elevator door, which then opened to admit him. “Stupid military. Stupid Ben.” He jabbed a button labeled ‘2BF’ and waited. When the elevator reached the level he wanted, Dib proceeded out of the elevator and onto the new floor.

He walked down the length of a long hallway until he reached the Infirmary entrance at its end, and entered through the door. Absentmindedly reaching to straighten his glasses, Dib looked around the room for Russel.

“Hello, Dib.” A voice from directly beside him made him jump.

”You scared me!” Dib scowled, whirling to face the owner of the voice. “You better stop doing that to me, Kora.”

“My apologies.” Kora inclined her head a bit, and then calmly met Dib’s eyes, tilting her head to one side. “What brings you here?”

Dib casually rubbed his neck, hurriedly composing himself. “Oh, I was just wondering how that thing was doing. You know. The one we picked up earlier that bumped into our ship.” He glanced searchingly around the Infirmary. “Where is it? And where’s Russel?” he asked, his gaze lingering over the empty beds.

“They’re right in the room over there,” Kora said as she pointed to the door at the far side of the room.

“Thanks,” Dib said, giving Kora a grateful smile. He strode to the back of the room, and then through the door Kora had indicated.

As Dib pulled open the door, he was immediately surprised by a hard object slamming into his face.

”OW!” he yelled, grabbing his throbbing nose as the object fell to the floor. He looked down to see a hardcover textbook at his feet. “What the hell?!” He shot an accusing glare in the direction from where the book had come.

”Don’t you know how to knock, Dib?” Russel grunted as he crossed his arms, reclining in a chair beside a desk at the side of the room. “It was very rude of you, not to knock before barging in here without invitation.”

”Yeah! But you didn’t have to throw a stupid book at me!” Dib growled furiously. “Ffff---uck! My nose hurts so much now, you bastard!” he whined, hoping the book had not done any serious damage.

“That’s good to know.” Russel smiled sadistically. He enjoyed seeing people in pain. “So, why are you here?”

Dib hissed in pain when he touched his nose; it stung horribly. “Damn it... Ugh... I’m just here to check up with that thing you’re taking care of.” Dib looked to the side, and saw it lying on a bed at the other side of the room, neatly tucked in under a comfortable, white blanket.

“It’s breathing, but it has no heartbeat,” Russel explained, his tone growing serious. “I really don’t know what’s keeping it alive, but I checked its blood, and it seems to have been drugged hundreds of times for some reason.”

“No heartbeats? How’s that possible?” Amazed, Dib walked over to the ‘thing’ and gazed in bewilderment at its pale green face. “What exactly IS this?” Dib questioned uncomfortably. “How come I feel like I know what... who... it is?” he added to himself in a whisper.

”Hey, wait a second. Why did you test its blood? Did you have any reason to?” Dib turned back to Russel, who had opened a magazine.

Russel did not respond, simply ignoring Dib and continuing to read.

“Hey! I’m talking here!!” Dib demanded an instant response, but Russel still did not reply.

“Oh, sorry.” At length, Russel stared coolly at Dib over the top of his magazine. “I was so into this new monthly book of Project XXX Omega.” Russel snorted, grudgingly answering Dib’s inquiry. “I tested its blood ‘cause there was nothing better to do. Besides, why would some random experiment be floating around? It wasn’t even near the foundation. So any tests could tell us something about it.” Russel rose from his seat and tossed the magazine onto his desk.

Dib cocked a brow at Russel’s short height when he stood before him. No matter what, he still looked more like he was eleven years old than forty-one, obviously the result of hyperspace. “Bored? What if this thing can’t go through blood tests?!” Dib questioned fiercely.

”It’s still breathing. I see nothing wrong with it,” Russel countered. He strode to the experiment to identify its gender. “And I think we should classify this thing as male. It’s got the features for one, anyways.”

“Male, eh?” Dib blinked and glanced to the being, nodding slightly.

”Uh, yeah… I’m craving for some of Kora’s food now.” Russel groaned as he held a hand against his stomach, and strolled to the door. “I’ll chat with you later, Dib.” He opened the door. “Kora, lets head to the kitchen. I’m starving!” he called to her, stepping into the Infirmary’s main room and allowing the door to close behind him, leaving Dib alone.

Dib shuddered. “Oh, gee! Now I’m all alone with this thing!” He stared, round-eyed, at it, just then noticing that it had antennae. “Okay, now that’s not what you see every day...” He slowly walked toward the green thing, and knelt beside the bed to have a better look at it. Dib uncertainly straightened his glasses, and then moved his hand over the mysterious being’s head to touch its antennae.

He flinched and recoiled when it twitched in response to his touch. “Sshh-it…!” He let out a nervous laugh. “Okay, I’ve got to stop scaring myself…”

I hope you all like the story so far, I'll have second chapter in ASAP.
