Make You Smile
Chapter Ten

“Don’t worry Lady Ayame. You’re with friends. We’re here to take you home.” Kagome said warmly, reaching out to lay a comforting hand on her shoulder.

Ayame backed away from Kagome’s arm and looked around her surroundings with frantic eyes. “You just took me away form my home! I want Ava! I want Kouga! Bring me back!” she shouted.

“Shut up woman. We are getting jewel shards for bringing you back, so you’re going back to the south no matter what you want. So just be quiet and don’t bother us” Inuyasha snapped from his seat by the fire.

Ayame stood up quickly, only to have her legs collapse beneath her. Kagome reached out and helped break her fall a little and helped her sit back down on the blankets she had been on.

“Be careful, you’re really weak” Sango said, “Although I don’t know why. You seem healthy enough.”

At the thought of her baby, probably crying out for her, Ayame began to cry. Kagome and Sango attempted to comfort her, although they soon realized that it was a wasted effort. Once Ayame had calmed slightly, she tried speaking. “Ava…she needs me.”

“Calm down Lady Ayame. Who is Ava?” Sango asked.

Ayame sniffled, “My…my daughter. She was only born this morning. She needs me. I’m sure she’s hungry…”

“Wait, wait, wait…you just gave birth this morning?” Kagome asked incredulously. She stood up and hurried over to Inuyasha.

“Inuyasha! We need to bring her back.”

“WHAT?! KAGOME! WHY?!”

“She just had a baby Inuyasha! She needs to feed her! We have to bring her back or who knows what will happen to the baby.”

“Is it Kouga’s baby?”

“I don’t know. Let me ask Lady Ayame.” Kagome walked back over to Ayame and Inuyasha saw them talking and he saw Lady Ayame start crying again. Kagome walked back over and nodded, “Yes, it’s Kouga’s baby.”

“Well then I don’t care.” Inuyasha said coldly.

“Inuyasha! How can you be so insensitive?! It’s a baby!”

“But it’s Kouga’sbaby. Someone who will grow up to be like Kouga; and if we can eliminate someone who will be like Kouga then I count it as a win for us.”

“I can’t believe you. If you won’t bring her back then Sango and I will. The baby needs her Inuyasha and I don’t care about the jewel shards if it means killing a child. We’re leaving now and there’s nothing you can do to stop us.” Kagome said defiantly, walking away from his without looking back.

“Get your things and Kirara Sango. We’re going to get the baby. Come on Lady Ayame, we can fly back to the tribe’s land on Kirara and it will be a lot easier on you.”

Ayame wiped her eyes, “Thank you for understanding how much she needs me.”

Sango walked over with her hiraikotsu strapped on her back and Kirara transformed. Kagome helped Ayame onto Kirara’s back and sat behind her as Sango situated herself in front of Ayame. Kirara lifted off the ground and began on her way to the northern mountains.

Kirara landed in the center of the mountain ring where the wolf demons lived. Ayame slid off the demon’s back and began running up the rock face towards her and Kouga’s cave.

“Follow her!” Sango yelled to Kagome and they both started following her up the mountain.

Ayame pulled aside the furs and ran into the cave, to find that Kouga was not there. She searched madly for Ava, only to find that she wasn’t in the cave either. She collapsed on the furs and buried herself in them as she began to cry hysterically.

Kagome and Sango pulled the furs aside and although they did not see Ayame in the cave, they heard Ayame in the cave. Sango walked into the cave and pulled back a fur to reveal a sobbing Ayame curled into the fetal position. Kagome sat down and pulled Ayame into her lap.

“She’s…not…here…Kouga’s…not…here…” she gasped out between sobs. “I’m…so…scared…”

“It’s okay. We’ll find them. We promise” Kagome whispered, smoothing her hair. She looked over at Sango, who was sitting opposite Kagome on the furs.

“What are we going to do?” she mouthed, not wanting Ayame to hear.

Sango shrugged, “I don’t know” she mouthed back.

“Where do you think Kouga is?” Kagome whispered.

“Looking for her” Sango responded.

Ayame soon cried herself dry and lay down on the furs and fell asleep. Once she was sleeping soundly, Kagome and Sango lit a fire in the cave and sat next to it with Kirara, now smaller, next to them.

“Do you think we will have to track Kouga down now? She won’t be okay until she sees that her daughter is okay.”

“That’s what we should do. But there’s no way Inuyasha will help us find Kouga, and he’s t he only one who would be able to help us. We’re just going to have to bring her back to the south and hope for the best.”

Sango shook her head, “Lady Ayame won’t do that. She won’t willingly go away from where she knows her child is.”

“Inuyasha isn’t going to care though, he’ll drag her to the south kicking and screaming if it meant getting the jewel shards. It’s all he cares about. And even more than that, the baby is Kouga’s and we both know how he feels about Kouga’s. He told me flat out that he didn’t care if the baby died because she was Kouga’s…he’s never going to help us.”

They both sat by the fire, thinking of ways to help Ayame. They shared ideas for hours until they both decided that it was best to follow Ayame’s lead and go to bed for the night. Not wanting to wake Ayame or return to camp and Inuyasha. They pulled back the furs and climbed under them alongside Ayame, snuggling in for the chilly night to come.

Inuyasha and Miroku sat in front of the fire with Shippou and waited for Sango and Kagome to return with Lady Ayame and her baby.

“They aren’t coming back tonight, are they?” Inuyasha asked a few hours after the girls had left.

Miroku shook his head, “No Inuyasha, they aren’t. And I don’t particularly blame them, after what you said to Kagome about Lady Ayame’s baby.”

“Feh. I don’t care about Kouga’s hanyou baby.”

“Inuyasha…why do you say that. Kouga’s baby is just like you.” Shippou pointed out, “Your parents were both noble and your dad was a demon and your mom was a human. How can you not care about a baby that is just like you Inuyasha? Doesn’t that make you like everyone who was ever mean to you?”

“And that from the mouths of babes. He’s right Inuyasha.”

“So what if the little brat is like me. Do you not understand that I don’t care about anything of Kouga’s?! Screw this, I’m going to sleep” he said in a huff and jumped up into a tree for the night.

Miroku looked at Shippou. “You’re wiser than I give you credit for Shippou. I think for once someone was finally able to shut Inuyasha up. Do you want to stay awake and wait for them to come back or do you think that we should go to sleep for the night?”

The small kitsune yawned, “I think that we should go to bed. I don’t think that they’re coming back tonight.”

“Okay. Good night Shippou” Miroku said, leaning up against a tree. Shippou curled up by the fire and quickly fell asleep.

Kouga and his tribe searched reverently throughout the forest.

“Lord Kouga! We have seen no sign of anyone for miles now. I think we should camp for the night and continue in the morning” Ginta shouted to Kouga, who was at the head of the pack, Ava in his arms sleeping.

Kouga stopped and let out a defeated sigh, “Men, set up camp for the night, we well resume our search with the first sight of the sun!”

The pack moved its separate ways and found places to sleep. Kouga jumped into the nearest tree and settled himself to sleep in such a way that Ava would be safest. He was lucky that he was able to find a wet nurse in the pack or else his daughter would have been in trouble. He knew that he had limited time to find Ayame and her kidnappers or else he would be putting his daughter in danger and he wasn’t going to lose another child as easily as the first.

He leaned forward and kissed the sleeping hanyou on her forehead, “Good night princess” he whispered, careful not to wake her up. He then let his head rest against the tree and he fell into an uneasy, restless sleep.
