To Observe

She was home alone, and the fact made him feel slightly less ashamed as he sat in the tree outside her window, watching her sleep.

The large, empty bed made her look smaller than usual, and the way the moonlight filtered through the leaves and dappled over her pale skin made her pink tresses all the more vibrant.

She shifted in her sleep, and he held his breath until she stopped moving. She had grown from a foolish girl into a strong woman over the years, and it didn’t take his genius or his sharp eyes to see that she was beautiful.

Her brow furrowed as she dreamt, and he wondered what was troubling her sleep as he rested his head against the rough bark of the tree.

He would normally be gone by now, on his way back to Oto, but he took the time to ingrain every curve of her body beneath the pale blue sheets into his memory, longing to see her enchanting eyes one last time.

His gaze traveled down her arm, draped lightly over her stomach, obsidian orbs hardening when he reached her hand.

One final glance at her sleeping, oblivious face, and he turned to leave for the last time.

Because the minute that simple ring was placed on her finger, he knew there was nothing here to return to.
