Five hours later, Sam, John and Dean were all at the local hospital. John had been out of surgery for a while and was sleeping in a private room. Sam had been given the okay to leave when he wanted. Apparently he had only received some cuts and bruises from the demon's attack (Although the Doctors didn't know about that) and the collision with the truck. After hearing that Dean was out of surgery, Sam made his way to his brother's hospital room.
He stopped at the door and stared at his brother's body.
"Oh, no." Sam sighed.
The Doctor, who had been treating both Dean and John, walked into the room. He had been looking for Sam and one of the nurses suggested that he try Dean's room.
"Your father's awake," He announced, "You can go see him if you like."
"Doc, what about my brother?" Sam asked.
Sam didn't really care about his father at the moment. His Dad was fine and was awake. Dean on the other hand...
"Well, he sustained serious injury," replied the Doctor "Blood loss, contusions to his liver and kidney. But it's the head trauma I'm worried about. There's early signs of cerebral edema."
"Well, what can we do?" Sam asked
"Well, we won't know his full condition until he wakes up," said the Doctor. He then added, in a slightly sadder tone "If he wakes up."
"If?" Sam asked, not liking the sound of that.
"I have to be honest; most people with this degree of injury wouldn't have survived this long. He's fighting very hard. But you need to have realistic expectations."
Sam nodded. He looked down at his brother one more time before he turned and walked past the doctor.
"Here. Give them my insurance" John says, and hands Sam a card.
Sam takes it and smiles when he reads it.
"Elroy McGillicutty?" Sam asks, slightly amused.
"And his two loving sons" John adds "So, what else did the doctor say about Dean?" He asked
"Nothing." Sam replied quickly and John could see that he was angry "Look. The doctors won't do anything, then we'll have to, that's all. I don't know, I'll find some hoodoo priest and lay some mojo on him."
"We'll look for someone," John promised
"Yeah."
"But Sam, I don't know if we're gonna find anyone."
"Why not?" Sam asked "I found that faith healer before."
"Right, that was, that was one in a million," replied John
"So what? De we just sit here with our thumbs up our ass?" Sam asked angrily
"No, I said we'd look. All right? I'll check under every stone," John promised. Then he took a breath before asking, "Where’s the Colt?"
"Your son is dying, and you're worried about the Colt?" Sam demanded.
"We're hunting this demon, and maybe it's hunting us too. That gun may be our only card," John replied.
"It's in the trunk," said Sam "They dragged the car to a yard off of I-83."
"All right. You've gotta clean out that trunk before some junk man sees what's inside."
"I already called Bobby. He's like an hour out, he's gonna tow the Impala back to his place."
"All right. You, you go meet up with Bobby. You get that Colt, and you bring it back to me. And you watch out for hospital security."
"I think I've got it covered," Sam replied before he headed towards the door.
"Hey. Here," John said, stopping Sam in his tracks.
Sam turned around and took a sheet of paper, which John was holding out to him.
"I made a list of things I need, have Bobby pick them up for me," John continued.
Sam glanced down at the paper and read it out loud.
"Acacia? Oil of Abramelin? What's this stuff for?" Sam asked.
"Protection."
"Hey, Dad? You know, the demon, he said he had plans for me, and children like me. Do you have any idea what he meant by that?"
"No, I don't," John lied.
Sam nods, and then he leaves, shutting the door behind him.
"Oh man, Dean is gonna be pissed," said Sam.
"Look, Sam. This...this just aint worth a tow," Bobby said, looking over at the car "I say we empty the trunk, sell the rest for scrap."
"No," Sam said quickly, "Dean would kill me if we did that. When he gets better he's gonna want to fix this."
Together they moved around to the car. Sam was looking at the damage and picked up his wrecked computer. Bobby looked at the Impala sadly.
"There's nothing to fix. The frame's a pretzel, and the engine's ruined." said Bobby, "There's barely any parts worth salvaging."
"Listen to me, Bobby. If there's only one working part, that's enough. We're not just going to give up on..."
Sam's speech faded, as his thoughts turned to his brother. At some point, he had stopped talking about the Impala and had started refuring to Dean and he knew that Bobby would have picked up on it.
"Okay. You got it," Bobby said quietly. He could see that Sam was getting upset and that he wasn't really talking about the Impala anymore.
"Here, uh, Dad asked for you to get this stuff for him," Sam said as he handed Bobby the paper that John had given him earlier.
"What's John want with this?" Bobby asked as he frowned down at the paper.
"Protection from the demon?" Sam said, with a shrug. Bobby gives him a strange look. "What?"
"Nothing, it's just, um..." Bobby began.
"Bobby? What's going on?"
Bobby sighed and looked into Sam's eyes.
John pulled a chair as close to the bed as he could get it. He needed to sit and watch his son. Dean's chest was barely moving but the little movement that it did make was just enough for John not to panic...slightly. An hour and a half later, when John couldn't stand to see Dean like this anymore, he stood up and patted Dean's arm before slowly turning and leaving the room.
"You're quiet," said John
Sam turns around, fuming and hurls the bag onto the bed with a crash.
"Did you think I wouldn't find out?" Sam asked bitterly.
"What are you talking about?" John asked, confused.
"That stuff from Bobby, you don't use it to ward off a demon, you use it to summon one. You're planning on bringing the demon here, aren't you? Having some stupid macho showdown?!" Sam accused, his voice deep with anger.
"I have a plan, Sam."
"That's exactly my point!" Sam yelled, "Dean is dying, and you have a plan! You know what; you care more about killing this demon than you do saving your own son!"
"Do not tell me how I feel!" snapped John, "I am doing this for Dean."
"How? How is revenge going to help him? You're not thinking about anybody but yourself, it's the same selfish obsession!"
"You know, it's funny, I thought it was your obsession too! This demon killed your mother, killed your girlfriend," John said sharply, his own anger starting to show in his voice. "You begged me to be apart of this hunt. Now if you'd killed that damn thing when you had the chance, none of this would have happened."
"It was possessing you, Dad; I would have killed you too."
"Yeah, and your brother would be awake right now."
"Go to hell!" Sam snapped
"I should have never taken you along in the first place. I knew it was a mistake. I knew I was wrong."
Sam went to say something, but was distracted by a number of nurses and doctors that suddenly go running by in the hallway.
"Something's going on out there," said John.
John jerked his head, indicating that Sam go and check it out. Sam, even though he was still pissed at his Dad, did what he was told. He left the room and followed the small medical staff.
"All clear." said the doctor.
"Clear" repeated a nurse.
"No" Sam whispered. Tears in his eyes.
One of the nurses checks Dean's pulse and shakes her head.
"Still no pulse."
"Okay, let's go again, 360."
"Charging," said a nurse.
The doctor grabbed the defibrillator and rubbed the panels together, before placing them on Dean's chest. Sam cringed as he watched Dean's chest raise up and then crash back onto the bed. He tried hard not to move to his brother's side and held himself back, while still fighting back tears. It looked like he might lose his brother.
Soon the monitors slowed and eventually became quiet.
"We have a pulse," said a nurse, a small smile on her face as she looked up at the doctor, "We're back into sinus rhythm."
Sam sighed in relief and finally moved away from the doorway. He stepped back into the hallway and watched as the nurses made Dean comfortable once again.
"I, um, have to go somewhere," Sam said suddenly.
"Wait, Sam." John called out, stopping Sam in his tracks once more. "I promise I won't hunt this demon. Not until we know Dean's okay."
Sam only nods before he leaves.
"Dean, I don't know how to help you," Sam said quietly "And Dad thinks that...Maybe there’s nothing we can do. But I'll keep trying, all right? As long as you keep fighting. I mean, come on you can't, you can't leave me here alone with dad, we'll kill each other, you know that," He takes a breath and tries to fight back tears, "Dean, you've got to hold on. You can't go, man, not now. We were just starting to be brothers again."
Sam watches his brother for a few more minutes. Then, just as he turns to leave, Dean suddenly starts gasping as he wakes up and starts choking on the tube that was in his throat.
"Dean?" Sam asked, shocked. He turned his head and yelled out into the hallway. "Help! I need help!"
