The First Time It Happened

"Look, I don't know how to tell you this," John began, "But this, whatever it is. I think that it's happened before."

"You think that whatever's saved Dean, has saved others?" Sam asked

"No. I think it's saved Dean before," replied John.

"What?" Dean and Sam both asked.

"What are you talking about, Dad?" Dean asked.

"There's been a few times, when you were younger, when you came close to death-" John began.

"Why haven't you said anything before?" Sam asked.

"Because I never thought about it before," John replied, "The last time it happened you were about 15 years old."

"So, you're saying that I was meant to die?" Dean asked.

"No, I'm not saying that. All I'm saying is that this has happened before," said John.

"When?" Dean asked, "When was the first time that it happened?"

John sighed, "Well, I've been thinking back over all the times that seem similar to this."

"And?" Sam asked.

"And I think it started before you were even born," John replied.

---FLASH BACK---

"Mary, stop walking so fast" John called out to his wife.

They had just gone shopping for more baby clothes and John was left to push the trolly towards the car, since Mary was 5 and a half months pregnant.

"Keep up, John," Mary called back with a laugh.

John smiled. He loved how bubbly Mary had become during her pregnancy. Sure she had her days where she hated being so fat, but those days were few and far between. Both John and Mary could not wait to be parents. They had already found out that they were having a boy and were down to two final choices for the name: Charlie or Dean.

By the time John pulled the shopping cart up beside the car, Mary was already waiting for him. He smiled before kissing her cheek.

"Do you think we brought enough stuff?" He asked

"Oh not nearly enough" She replied. When John frowned she added "But that’s enough for today. But we will be back for more later"

"I don't think the kid's gonna need that much stuff."

"Of course he will," replied Mary "Our baby's going to have everything he needs."

John smiled again as he opened the trunk of the car. He started loading the items from the cart into the car. When he was done, Mary took the shopping cart and started pushing in towards the bay, where the carts where place. John could hear soft humming as he closed and locked the trunk.

John's head suddenly snapped up when he heard the loud screeching of tires. He saw a car with some young teenagers, who had probably just had their license for ten minutes, if in fact they had them at all. The car was speeding through the car park. It turned a corner sharply and was heading straight towards...

"MARY!" John yelled

Mary stopped and looked up, horrified at the car coming towards her. She was frozen in fear and just stood still. John ran as fast as he could. He was a few metres away from her when suddenly the car stopped. It wasn't as if the driver had hit the breaks, because then the car would have rolled to a stop. It was as if the car hadn't been moving at all.

John rushed over to Mary and took her in his arms. They were both shocked at what had happened.

---END FLASH BACK---

"That doesn't mean anything," said Sam, "Maybe the battery died or they ran out of gas."

"I worked on the car and it was fine," John replied, "It was as if something held the car back."

"What?" Dean asked.

John shook his head and sat down in the chair beside Dean's bed.

"Like I said, I don't know. I didn't really think about it then," said John, "I mean I didn't know what I know now, all the things about demons. Back then...all that mattered was that you and your mother were safe."

"What happened to the kids in the car?" Sam asked.

John turned to him and shrugged slightly.

"Ran off. Turns out they had stolen the car," John replied.

"It still seems...odd," said Sam, "I mean, there has to be a reasonable explanation."

"Sammy, with everything we've seen and done, you should know that there isn’t always an explanation for things," said John

"No, but a car?" Sam asked, "It just doesn't sound supernatural."

"Doesn't mean that it wasn't," Dean said, quietly.

Sam turned to Dean.

"We don't know that, Dean." said Sam "For all we know, this could just be a coincidence."

"But maybe its not. Maybe there is something out there stopping me from dying," said Dean.

"I don't think it's a coincidence," said John suddenly

Both Dean and Sam turned and looked down at their father.

"I would, if it were just these two times," he said, "But there have been others."

"When, when did it happen next?" Dean asked, his voice soft.

John looked down and didn't say anything for a whole minute. He hadn't thought about this for so long because the idea of it just tore him up. He had felt so sick and helpless back then. He promised himself that he wouldn't think about it but now he had no choice but to re-live it.

"You…you were about four months old..." John began, slowly.
