It was in the middle of the night. Jim woke up, he heard strange noises.
“Melinda?” he turned around and saw that the other side of the bed was empty.
He got out of bed.
“Melinda, where are you?”
He saw light coming from under the bathroom door. He sighed, she was just going to the bathroom.
Then he heard the sound again. It sounded like something between choking and vomiting.
He rushed into the bathroom.
“Oh my God, Melinda!”
--
Melina was lying on the ground, sweat running down her face, only half conscious. There was vomit in the toilet and on the bathroom floor.
Jim rushed to her.
“Melinda, you have to wake up.”
She let out a soft moan.
“Come on Melinda, you have to get back in bed.”
He gently lifted her and putted her back in bed. He went back to the bathroom and grabbed a thermometer and quickly went back to Melinda.
When the thermometer beeped he took it out of her mouth.
Shit, 102.6!
Why hadn’t she woke him up and told him she wasn’t feeling alright?
He gently stroked her hair.

Next morning Jim woke up on the ground at Melinda’s side of the bed. It took some seconds for him to remember what happened last night and he quickly sat up and looked at her.
She was so pale, he’d never seen her like that. Sweat was still running down her face. Jim grabbed the thermometer again.
103.8. Shit, she’s getting worse.
He saw Melinda stir and she slowly opened her eyes.
She let out a soft moan and started breathing heavily.
“Melinda, calm down, okay, it’s gonna be alright.”
Melinda looked at him, panicked.
“It…hurts….so much.” She whispered
“Where does it hurt?”
“… Everywhere.”
“I’ll get you some water and painkillers, okay? Hang on.”
He rushed to the bathroom. The smell of vomit was like a slap in his face, but he didn’t have time to clean right now.
He took some ibuprofen out of the cabinet and filled a glass with water.
He quickly went back to Melinda and gave her two pills and the glass of water.
Melina took the glass of Jim, and with shaky hands she moved it to her mouth. But as soon as she tried to swallow the liquid, she started choking on it. The glass fell out of her hands, shattering a part on the ground.
Jim was shocked, it was even worse than he thought.
Melinda kept coughing. When she finally stopped bright red droplets were on her lips and chin.
This was enough for Jim. He grabbed the phone and called for an ambulance.
