The Project
Denzel sat in his afternoon class. He wasn’t focused on school, but instead on what he would do on the weekend. It was Friday and Denzel had been promised, by both Cloud and Tifa, that Cloud would be home the whole weekend. Not just a day and then go out on a delivery mission, no this would the entire weekend. He smiled widely as he thought about what they could all do, him Cloud and Tifa.
He heard his teacher clear her voice, and he glanced up to see the teacher standing at the board, “Alright Students, before you all go home for the weekend, I think we should introduce the new project. By Friday of next week you are to have completed a family tree. This family tree will include immediate family and extended family. Each family member will have a little description and picture to go with them in their place on the family tree. You’ll see examples and see my grading scale on Monday, but over the weekend I expect you to ask for photographs from your parents. Alright?”
There was a chorus of “Alright.”
Denzel cringed at the assignment. How could he fill out such a chart? When the bell rang to dismiss the kids from school, Denzel did not run with the others, instead he slowly approached the teacher’s desk. Miss Fenij looked up at him, “What is it Denzel?”
“How am I supposed this project?”
“Like everyone else,” she said not understanding his question.
“But I don’t have a family.”
“Oh Denzel,” she said, sighing, “Just talk to Tifa about it, I’m sure you’ll be able to figure something out.”
“Sure,” he said, grabbing his books and walking outside. Walking home wouldn’t be so bad since the weather was good and the bar was only four blocks away from school. Yet as he went outside, he heard a cocky voice, ask, “There you are Denzel.”
“Cloud!” The boy jogged over to where Cloud sat on his fenrir, the engine was still going.
“Hey,” Cloud was grinning, “I thought I’d missed you for a moment there.”
“No, I just had to ask the teacher a few questions.”
“Nothing bad I hope,” he said the smile was still there, and Denzel loved seeing it.
“Of course not,” Denzel shrugged, “Just on an assignment.”
“You have homework?”
“A little,” he got on the fenrir after a little struggle, but Cloud helped him up.
“Get that done first, you know Tifa won’t let you do anything unless you get that done,” he glanced back at the boy, “You ready?”
“Yeah,” Denzel kept quiet about the project, he could wait until later to raid Tifa’s photo books to find pictures, but he wasn’t sure what he could do with them. He would just have to wait for Monday, but his thoughts were interrupted as the fenrir began to speed of. Clinging tighter to Cloud, Denzel feared if he didn’t hold on, he might be cast to the wind.
When they pulled up to the Bar, Cloud let Denzel off, “Tell Tifa we’re here, I have to do something real quick. You get started on your homework,” his last statement had the most serious tone to it.
“Yes Cloud,” he replied as he went in, and called out, “Tifa, we’re home!”
Tifa came downstairs and smiled at him, “How was school?”
“It was good,” he settled down at a table in the currently closed bar.
“I see you have homework,” she came closer and glanced over his shoulder, “Need any help?”
“Not right now,” he said softly, “I’ll ask if I need some.”
“Alright,” she went behind the bar, cleaning glasses that had been left from earlier, “Dinner will be around eight, okay?”
“Okay,” he pulled out his work and began to work on it, taking no time to ask any other questions. The sooner he got this done, the sooner he could have some fun.
Cloud came in, a few minutes later, but took a different route to the house, avoiding the area where Denzel was working, and still finding his way to where Tifa had gone.
“Cloud,” she said turning around. She stood in the kitchen, after having finished her job in the bar.
“What?”
“I take it you told him to do his homework.”
“What makes you say that?”
“He started on it right away, usually more persuading to get him to start it.”
“Glad I could help,” he said taking the time to pour himself a glass of water.
“It’s nice having you home for a change.”
“It’s nice being here and not out on the road. I missed seeing you guys. Speaking of that, where’s Marlene? She’s usually here after school.”
“Barret decided to take her on a little family outing. He wanted them to spend some more father-daughter time.
“That makes sense,” he said taking another sip.
“Yeah,” she smiled.
Then Denzel ran in, “I’m done!”
“That fast? And it’s all right?” Tifa asked looking over at the ecstatic boy.
“Yeah, I’m sure of it.”
“Alright then,” she paused, “But Cloud has to approve it.”
“Uh...” The boy grumbled realizing how hard it was becoming to be finished, “Fine,” he ran back, grabbing his homework and running it back to Tifa and Cloud, practically shoving it into Cloud’s hands, “Here.”
Cloud had a smirk on his face as he began to read through the problems, double checking each of them, before he nodded to Tifa, “Alright, it’s been checked and I believe that he has a perfect paper here.”
“If you say so,” Tifa had her own broad smile on her face, as she looked at Denzel, “Well what do you want to do?”
“I just want to be with you guys,” he said happily.
