He’d given up a lot of things in his life. Each time it seemed like the right thing to do. He’d rejected his religion, when he felt it had turned its back on him when he needed it most. He quit doing drugs, because a cop just shouldn’t be constantly breaking the law. He stopped cheating on his wife, hoping he wouldn’t lose her. Now he couldn’t even remember which wife that was. He left Baltimore, when the bad memories outweighed the good. For a while, a new city with new people had been the answer, but now he felt as sad and disconnected as ever, and the only thing he had left to surrender was life itself.
