High School Reunion

CHAPTER 1... THE LETTERS

2580 Chestnut Street

Houston, Texas

“Jimmy! You got some mail, hun.”

James Isaac Neutron lifted his head off the pillow and yawned.

“Aw, Gretch,” he moaned. “You know not to wake me up this early on my day off.”

Gretchen laughed and spanked him on the butt. “It’s eleven fifteen, nimrod,” she said. “And you got a letter from your old high school.”

“Huh?”

Jimmy sat up, suddenly interested.

Gretchen, his wife of six years, sat down on the bed next to him and read over his shoulder.

“You are hereby invited to a high school reunion in the gymnasium of South Retroville High School.”

Jimmy gasped and smiled. “All right!” he said.

“What are you ‘all right’ing about?” she asked. “I threw mine away.”

“You got invited? But you didn’t even go to this school.”

Gretchen took the letter from Jimmy and scanned it as she said, “No, for my old high school. I didn’t like it that much, though. You know how everyone was so mean to me.”

Jimmy shrugged. “Well, I’m going to this one. Want to come with me? I could flaunt you in front of all my old friends.”

Gretchen smiled. “That would be kind of fun. Yeah, I’ll go.”

“Yay!” Jimmy said, and kissed her on the cheek.

“It’s in three weeks, says here,” Gretchen said, pointing to the bottom of the page.

“I can’t wait,” Jimmy said. “It’s been forever since I saw the guys.”

Apartment 7B

New York, New York

Lyle Harlon (formerly known as Carl Wheezer) yawned and reached for the beeping alarm clock by his bed.

The sound of a siren, a very common sound where he lived, rang through the air. He moved his head to it like it was music as he pulled on a pair of jeans and headed for the bathroom.

He studied his chin in the mirror. His beard was coming in nicely.

Lyle used to wear glasses, but now contacts were where it was at. He had changed a lot since he moved from Texas to New York. It had been a long, grueling trip that changed him from a chubby schoolboy to an average ladies’ man.

The phone rang, and he groaned.

“Hello?” he said exasperatedly into the speaker.

“Hey, Lyle! It’s me, Miranda.”

Lyle rolled his eyes. Miranda was his latest ex-girlfriend, who still claimed to be his friend and called all the time.

“Oh, hi, Miranda,” he said, trying to hide the impatience in his voice.

“I’m glad you’re home,” Miranda said. “I wanted to go out today for some coffee or something. Or, there’s that new movie playing with Libby Folfax in it. You want to see it?”

Carl slapped himself on the forehead and tried to think of a truthful excuse. His moment came when the mail slid through the slot in his door.

“I can’t,” he said quickly. “I have plans. I just got a letter from my parents, and they want me to come visit them. Bye.”

Carl smiled as he hung up the phone.

He sorted through the first few letters, which were bills and eviction notices. Boring.

Suddenly he came upon something that just might not be junkmail.

“High school reunion?” he said aloud. “Huh.”

“Don’t skimp on the eyeliner this time,” Libby said with a laugh.

“Don’t you worry, sister, I know what to do with you,” said her makeup artist Juanita, who held Libby’s head still while at the same time outlining her chocolate brown eyes with eyeliner.

After she was done, she handed a hand mirror to Liberty Folfax, who looked in it and gasped.

“Girl, you have done it again!” she said. “I don’t know what I would do without you.”

They hugged, then there was a knock on the trailer door.

“I’ll get it,” Hamilton said, then got up from his chair.

“Who’s there?” Libby called when she heard the door close.

“It’s just today’s mail,” Hamilton said. He sat down next to Libby, who was now getting her hair done, and started sorting through the letters.

“Fan mail, mostly,” he said. “Oh, here’s something... an invitation.”

“Ooooh!” Libby squealed. “Who’s it from? Oh, don’t tell me Ashlee Simpson’s daughter’s having her birthday early? I’ve already rescheduled my shoot twice for it...”

“No, it’s from South Retroville High,” he said, and handed it to her.

Libby raised an eyebrow, and Juanita looked at the letter as Libby unfolded it.

“High school reunion?” Libby said. “I don’t know. It’s all the way back in Texas.”

“Who cares, babycakes?” Hamilton said. “We’re only in California. Besides, wouldn’t it be nice to go rub your success in everyone’s faces?” He grinned and Libby mirrored the look.

“I guess it would be kind of cool to... ow, Juanita... go show my ex-boyfriend who’s got the goods now.”

Hamilton shut his ears. “La la la la!” he said. “I don’t want to hear about no ex-boyfriend!”

Libby playfully slapped him on the arm and said, “Don’t worry, you won’t.”

Smithgreene, Utah

The sun was shining into the room, but to Sheen Estevez it still seemed dark and dreary.

He sighed and leaned his head back against the headboard. The birds sang to him outside, but all he wanted was for them to shut up.

“Hello?” a voice came softly at the door, followed by a knock. “Anyone awake in there?”

Sheen sighed again. “Come on in, Tajo.”

Tajo sat down at Sheen’s bedside and gave him a shoulder hug.

“How you feeling this morning?”

“Okay,” Sheen said dully. “Still getting used to it, though.”

Tajo winced and gave him another tight hug. “I know this is hard,” he said softly, “but I promise everything’s going to be okay. I’m always going to be here for you, all right?”

Sheen smiled. “I know, honey. I’m so glad you’re here.”

Tajo kissed him on the head and put an arm around his shoulder. “At least you’re home now,” he said. “I was getting so sick of waiting for an hour every day just to see you. I mean, we’re married for crying out loud.”

Sheen leaned on Tajo’s shoulder and let him stroke his head gently.

“I wish my dad would come see me,” he said. “He’s so busy with his new wife and kid.”

Tajo nodded. “At least he doesn’t have to be alone,” he said. “And you know he came to see you almost every day you were in the hospital.”

Sheen nodded. “How’s the baby?” he asked.

“She’s fine,” Tajo said. “I can’t believe you’re finally a big brother!”

Sheen smiled. “She’s just my half sister, though.”

“I know, I know,” Tajo said. “But she’s your dad’s daughter, so she’s your sister. Besides, she’s totally adorable. I can’t wait for you to see her. Leslie’s going to e-mail some pictures to us.”

“Sweet,” Sheen said, smiling. “I can’t wait to see her either. And she has such a pretty name... Spirit.”

“Your dad and Leslie have quite the imaginative name choices, don’t they?”

“My mom’s the one who named me, so shut it,” Sheen said playfully.

“Oh, the mail’s here,” Tajo said, suddenly standing up when he saw the mail truck drive down the street. “I’ll go get it.”

“Probably nothing too great,” Sheen commented as his life partner left the room.

Tajo sat back down on the bed with the mail.

“Let’s see,” he said. “You got a letter from your cousin Charlie, here’s the phone bill... damn... oh, here’s something cool. An invitation to your high school reunion.”

Sheen smiled. “Awsome! When does it say?”

“Hmm... three weeks.”

“Oooh! I want to go!”

“Settle down, hun,” Tajo said. “You might not be able to go, since...” he looked down at Sheen’s leg.

“I’m sure it’ll be fine,” Sheen said. “Boy, I can’t wait to see all my old friends... I still remember Carl and Jimmy and Cindy... and I know I already told you I used to be friends with that model/actress Libby Folfax?”

“And I’m still jealous as hell,” Tajo said.

Sheen smiled. “I’m sure my doctor will let me go,” he said. “I could just go in my wheelchair.”

Tajo kissed him on the cheek and embraced him. “I’d better go with you, baby,” he said.

Sheen leaned on him and read the letter. “Yeah. I’d feel safer.”

1482 Judith Street

Mayfield, Washington

Cynthia Aurora Vortex opened her door and stepped inside, still panting. The mail was already sitting on the table. She pulled her long platinum hair out of the ponytail and caught her breath. She’d had quite a workout that morning.

She picked up the first letter and opened it.

Dear Cindy,

I hope you like the new house! I can’t wait to come home and christen it with you, if you know what I mean.

Cindy rolled her eyes, smiling, and kept reading.

I’m having a great time here in Alaska, but I wish you were with me. It gets really boring sometimes. We haven’t found any new readings yet, but the boys are getting hopeful. I’ll be home soon. Tell the kids I said hi.

Love, Justin

Cindy smiled and put the letter down, then threw some junkmail to the side and picked up an invitation.

Just as she was opening it, her daughter Skylar walked into the room.

“Mommy, what’s that?” she asked.

“I don’t know,” she said. “Daddy just sent us a letter, though, and he said for me to tell you and your sister hi.”

“Okay,” Skylar said, then bounced out of the room. Cindy smiled as she watched her. She was absolutely the sweetest thing in the world.

“High school reunion, eh?” Cindy said out loud to the cat, who had just jumped up onto the counter. “I just might check this out.”

She tossed the letter to the side, then downed a glass of water and went back outside to jog some more.

WHEW! Chapter 2 will be better, I promise. If you’re confused, then TOO BAD! MWA HA HA! I’m going on vacation, so it might be a while before I can update this. But when I do it will be worth the wait... I hope. Tee hee... anyway, in chapter 2 it will explain Jimmy’s life, then chapter 3 will explain Carl’s life, etc. Hope you enjoy this fic! PLEASE REVIEW!!!!

P.S. PLEASE REVIEW! (Heh heh heh... as if I don’t say that enough. Oh yeah and by the way, review please. Keh.)
