Knight Designation

Prologue

Ren is running. The air is so cold but he can’t stop. If he stops they will catch him. He finds the meeting place. Head pop up and Zack nods his approval. He runs around to sit next to Seth and Kat. Max joins them with a smile and they wait with baited breaths.
Finally Jondy appears at the small snowy hill.

Ren watches Zack as he begins to separate them into pairs. Brin and Rae run off and as he watches he realizes he may never see them again.

Kat is with him and they take a different path and the wire fence is in front mocking them. A guard attacks them and Kat falls. Ren hits the guard back and takes him out. Kat’s head hit a rock, alive but she won’t wake up. He takes one last look at her and clutches the fence and climbs over it. Then Ren runs. As fast as he can.

“Mark, mate you okay?”

Mark woke up at once, there was light outside and down on the street was the sound of another English day. He looked around; the feeling of being chased slowly fading. It was his last day in England, and in a few hours he would be back on a plane to America.

“I’m fine Pete”. Pete looked as if he didn’t believe him but let it go. His friend then left the room and Mark sat up, concentrating. That had not been the first weird dream he had, but this felt more of a memory than of Ace Lightning. It had been going on for a few weeks now and Mark had been having recurring dreams of running, and the fear felt so real he could almost touch it. Mark could not remember the names, but he could remember the faces. Of the girl he had left behind and he had no idea what it had meant.

Well at least back in Conestoga, things could get back to normal or at least as normal as they could get.

Lady Illusion spun around and hurled an energy ball into an old used car. Sparx fell out and looked sheepishly at Ace.

“Hi Ace”. Illusion looked really annoyed as if it were bad enough that they spent the majority of the time playing rescue the dull pets humans called cats from trees (Ace’s idea so while they waited for the time Lord Fear would come back), now Sparx had to spy on them. “I though you two were looking for Random” Sparx said standing and dusting herself off.

“We were” Ace answered seriously, ”But Random has vanished, and we don’t know where- we were looking for clues”.

Illusion arched an eyebrow. “What did you think we were doing?” Sparx went slightly pink.

“I didn’t know what you two were doing that’s why I was here”. Illusion looked about ready to send Sparx to oblivion and Ace groaned, bracing himself for another argument between Sparx and Illusion.

“This is a bad idea- we don’t even know if Ren is here”.

Zack kept looking out upon the hill the two were standing on that overlooked the town of Conestoga. The sunlight was receding, putting everything in a golden glow. “I can’t tell you everything in case we are compromised. But Ren is here so you just have to trust me little sister”.

Rae tilted her head slightly. ”I do trust you. But Zack, we know Lydecker is here, we could draw him right to Ren. And if you are right Ren can’t even remember what Lydecker means let alone his own name.”

“That’s why we have to find him, after what happened in Seattle to Max and Logan…”

“I still can’t believe that Deck did that, changed Logan’s DNA. And now Manticore has them both. Blue lady… Zack, apart from us, Jace and Zane, everyone else are either dead or in their hands”.

Zack turned to her. “That’s why we stick to the plan, you have to stay in the motel room, regardless what happens. I will try to figure out which kid from the high school Ren is. If I get caught, you have to take Ren out of here”.

Colonel Donald Lydecker stood in front of a teenaged girl who was dressed in an all black military uniform. From the twelve that had escaped, not including Jace only four of the rogue X5s remained. This one hopefully would make that number fall to zero. He knew that the others, from the ones left would not stand to just let one of their own be taken.

“Do you understand your mission X5 623”

The young X5 responded instantly. ”Yes sir! I am to discern and locate 457 and use him to draw the other rogues in sir!”

623 had been a part of Zack’s unit and had been injured and left behind in the escape. She had been put through psy ops until there had been very little individuality left in her, and was reprogrammed. She was not really ‘Kat’ any more.

Lydecker passed 623 a file“ Your identity to the young civilians and the local high school will be Katherine Adams, and you will tell them 623 you prefer to be called ‘Kat’. This should help reveal who 457 is”.

“Yes Sir!”

“Dismissed”. 623 saluted and left the room. Lydecker looked at the wall of his temporary office; he was only here to catch them.

Instead of the twelve photos of the twelve whom had escaped, as children there was only one picture of a child-Ren and the rest were current. Zack, Zane, Jace and Rae.

Max, Jondy, Brin, Krit and Syl as well as that reporter had been captured. Ben and Tinga were dead. Unnecessary losses in Lydecker’s opinion. His kids were too independent; they were not acting in their own best interest.

But Lydecker would change all that.

“This time, it’s going to end differently. No one stands in the way of the Master Programmer”.

And so I know, small prologue. For anyone, Psy Ops is this place in Manticore where they brainwash and screw with people’s minds through drugs and telepathic transgenics. And as for Kat being an X5, well she didn’t have that much character to worry about changing.
