prologue

Here I sit beside her hospital bed again. And again it’s my fault.

I stroke the back of her hand in hopes that my touch will rouse her. She’s been in this unconscious state going on forty-eight hours now. Each second making me more ill at ease than the last. She remained as still as death. The hum of the machines and the beep of her monitors the only thing to alert anyone that she’s holding on. But barely.

By some miracle her father still allowed me to see her. John Eames is a more forgiving man than I’ll ever be. He said to me, “You are her best medicine. Bring her back…back to all of us.”

I close my eyes and whisper another prayer. She has to wake up. “Do you hear me, Alex?” I move close to her ear. “You have to wake up…fight it. Fight it all and come back to us. Your family…their all waiting. Waiting for you.” He swallowed hard. “I’m here…if you want me.”

I’d never hold it against her if she wanted nothing more to do with me. This past year…It’s all my fault.

“I love you,” I whisper before placing a kiss to her forehead. “We need you, Alex…come back to us.” I swallow hard. I’m a selfish man. “Come back to me. I need you...”

And yet the silence lingers. With a soft sigh, I sit back in my chair. My hand cradles hers and I wait.

How did we arrive at this juncture not once, but twice you may ask. And to answer that, I’d have to go back. Back to the day when it all began for us. Not the bad. But the good. Back to the night, I first had Alex Eames as my own. Back to the night that Jimmy Deakins told us that we were good detectives and even with that, he was leaving us.
