Chapter Eight: The Faun's Pendant

XXX

A blinding light filled the store and faded as soon as it came. Time resumed its normal pace and no one seemed to notice what happened. Momoko opened her eyes, groaning a little, and sat up, shaking her head.

Her mind was fuzzy, but she distantly remembered what happened before. She put a hand to her face and felt for her scratches. Her eyes widened in surprise. They were gone. She checked her shoulder and the other parts of her body that got wounded. They all healed.

She checked her watch and gasped. It was the same time they got transported into the book. She looked at the book. It looked normal and unopened, like a newly bought book. Her thoughts swam in her head and she just stared into space.

She heard groans from behind her. She spun around and saw her friends shaking their heads, holding their foreheads or just sitting up, confused. Momoko immediately ran to them and told them what she found out.

Ryu checked his watch. "You're right!" he said amazed "This is the time I opened the book. But, you're telling us that time stopped while we were inside the book?"

"Yeah," said Momoko "It's weird. But I felt that everything stopped when the light appeared."

Hideki suddenly had a thought and checked his leg. "Hey," he said "My wound's gone." Everyone else, except for Momoko, started and immediately checked the parts where their bodies were wounded. They all healed.

"But the book thing was real, wasn't it?" said Kei looking at his glasses "It was real, right?"

"Well," said Ryu "I'm not sure, but I know it was real."

"If the adventure we had was real," said Chii "Then, how come Chii looks fine?"

"Or maybe we just fainted and dreamt the whole thing," said Hideki shrugging.

"But it felt real!" said Momoko "We even got hurt mortally and we all felt it!" While they all argued, Mizuho went to the table and got the book. She opened it to the first page, assuming, if their adventure wasn't real, that it would be blank. To her surprise, she was words. Puzzled, she read the first paragraph. Her eyes widened in shock.

"Hey you guys," she said shakily "You have to see this." Everyone stopped and went to her. They all looked at the page and read. Their eyes widened.

"But that's impossible!" cried Momoko, snatching the book from Mizuho.

"It's what happened in the beginning!" cried Ryu incredulously.

"Then it was real!" said Hideki.

"But how did it end up all there?" asked Kei.

"It's a mystery," said Chii. Momoko skimmed the book, reading the pages quickly. She stopped at a page.

"It's all here," she said quietly "Our names, the monsters, everything! It has every detail on what happened to us while we were inside it."

"Hey," said Ryu "Go to the part after I blacked out. I didn't know what happened after." Momoko flipped to that page and read aloud,

"Momoko noticed the faun was holding the pendant loosely, so she lunged for it one last time. She grabbed it and held it up, towards the sky, shouting "BRING US HOME!" The faun spun around, shouting "What?! No!!"

The blinding light, similar to the one in the book store, flooded the area, killing the faun. Momoko felt like she was being sucked in, so she closed her eyes, ignoring the feeling. Then, the light faded."

"Pyroxis," muttered Ryu under his breath. Momoko flipped to the last chapter of the book. Her eyes widened again.

"It's even taking note of what's happening now," she said. Everyone gathered around her and stared at the page.

"What's the title of the book?" asked Chii. Momoko closed it to the front cover.

"The Faun's Pendant," she read.

"Well," said Kei "Pyroxis did say the pendant belonged to him. And seeing that boy's body was like…" he shivered at that thought.

"Let's leave it here," said Ryu "We don't want that in our memories." Momoko nodded and set the book on the table. They all bought their books and left hurriedly, not looking back at the book.

And so, the book is still there, waiting to be opened by someone who would also be willing to experience what the friends experienced in heir adventure.
