Volume title: New friends, new experiences

‘Look, Kairi,’ Sora protested (for about the billionth time), ‘I don’t see why we had to drive for like, five hours to NAMIkun! We could have just gone to nemuKAN and saved ourselves four and a half hours of travel, you know.’ Anime conventions were pretty much the same everywhere, whether it was in St. Catherine’s or Toronto, he figured.

The red-head giggled. ‘Oh, but there’s something special at NAMI that’s not at nemu,’ she said. ‘Trust me, you’ll love it.’

Sora sighed. Kairi could be soooo frustrating at times. Sometimes he wondered how he'd put up with her all throughout college after they met.‘What is it?’

She laughed again. ‘It’s not a what, it’s a who.’ Oh dear. Sora was so fun to mess with.

‘Alright then, who is it?’ Sora threw his hands up in frustration. Five hours in a car with Kairi did that to you, you know?

‘Well…I heard about it from Marluxia who heard about it from Axel who heard it from Leon who heard it from Cloud who heard it from Olette who heard it from Roxas…’

‘Get ON with it already, woman!’ This was stupid. Really stupid.

‘…and I’ll explain the rest to you when you meet them,’ she finished. Jeesh. She wouldn’t even let Sora know if this person was a guy or a girl. Stupid Kairi and her stupid schemes.

‘...wait, who are these people?’

‘Friends I met online.’ Sora smacked his forehead. He should’ve known.

‘How much longer until we get there?’ Please, god. If he spent any longer with this girl he’d go crazy.

‘Oh, around…five to ten minutes or so.’ It was official. Someone up there loved him.

‘…what exactly are you looking for, Kairi?’

She paid no attention to the brunette, as Kairi was trying to make some sense of the stupid convention map and the directions hastily scribbled on it.

‘Let’s see…if we turn left, right, right again, then we should be there…’

Catching Kairi’s muttered directions, Sora raised his eyebrows and looked straight ahead.

‘Is that what you’re looking for?” he asked, pointing at a relatively far away group consisting of a bunch of guys and one or two girls. Kairi looked up sharply and clapped her hands in excitement.

‘Yes! That’s it! Thanks, Sora!’ She took off, shouting as she zoomed down the hallway. Strangely enough, nobody even spared a glance at her. Sora sighed. Ah, anime cons. They were all the same wherever you went. It was one of the only things he’d figured out in his four years of, well, con-going.

Once he’d caught up with Kairi with the group, she was already chatting happily with them. Noticing that Sora had finally arrived, she turned and waved.

‘Sora! Took you long enough to get here. Let me introduce you to everyone.’ She pointed to a girly-looking blue-eyed male in what seemed to be a black pleather trench coat. Or was it a manly looking girl? He couldn’t really tell if they had a chest or not. ‘That’s Marluxia.’ Noting Sora’s questioning look, she added something. ‘Yes, Marluxia’s a guy.’

‘Oh.’ He blinked. That guy just had to be gay. No sane male would have pink hair.

‘Nice to meet you!’ he said, smiling…well, girlishly, for a lack of words. Moving on…

‘That’s Axel,’ she said, pointing at a red-haired male with green eyes in the same pleather-looking coat as Marluxia. ‘He’s just a little crazy, so don’t mind him.’

He grinned rather wolfishly. ‘Name’s Axel. A-X-E-L. Got it memorized?’

Right.

Kairi then proceeded to introduce the other people in the little group. There was Leon (whose name was actually Squall but Leon was his cosplaying name, or something like that), a brown haired stoically quiet man in…you guessed it, black pleather with plenty of belts and buckles. There was Cloud, a spiky-haired blond whose spikes were nearly as gravity defying as Sora’s himself, in more black. Except it seemed to be broadcloth or cotton, not pleather. (Sora wondered if Cloud’s hair was always like that or if it was just for NAMI.) And there was Olette, a rather normal (compared to everyone else, of course) girl in an orange top and beige capris..

“And…’ Kairi looked around, seemingly searching for someone. ‘Where’s Roxiku?’ Roxiku. What a weird name, Sora thought. He really hoped it was just a cosplaying alias.

Leon snorted. ‘They’re in the Yakon area. Roxas said something about how the situation was perfect for a photoshoot but we all know that they both just want fangirls to see.’

Kairi sighed. ‘And who’s the model today?’

Marluxia laughed. ‘Guess, Kairi, guess. It’s Yakon. That should give you enough hints.’

She smiled sarcastically. ‘I get it. Do you know where in Yakon? I gotta introduce Sora—‘ she gestured towards her cousin, ‘—to someone.’

‘Entrance. You know, where all the shiny silver and chrome is. You know what? We’ll go with you; we need to ask them what they need set up in the Artist’s Alley anyways.’ Axel nodded in agreement with Marluxia.

Ooookay then. Sora had never, in his four years of con-going, seen a crowd this large at a single photoshoot. The mismatched, black-pleather (on the cases of Leon, Axel, and Marluxia) group pushed and shoved their way to the front.

There was another blond, spiky-haired boy there. Except his hair wasn’t as extreme as Cloud, thankfully. But what piqued Sora’s curiosity the most was the person that the blond was taking pictures of, a silver-haired female in some complicated gothic lolita dress.

‘Roxas!’ Kairi shouted above the noise, right into his ear. He winced, slid his digital camera shut and turned.

‘Kairi!’ They hugged for a moment, before turning back to the posing model. ‘Riku!’ he shouted. The model sat up on the ledge in front of the window, and looked towards Roxas enquiringly. ‘Take a break for a bit, okay? Kairi’s here!’ She got up, and walked towards the crowd—namely, Roxas, Kairi, Leon, Cloud, Olette, Marluxia, Axel and Sora.

Marluxia shouted to the crowd, ‘Okay, okay, you can go now! The photoshoot will resume in fifteen minutes so if you’re still interested in photos, come back then! For now go, like, find some other couple to watch make out!’ Many people grumbled, but eventually they left, leaving the mismatched group alone. Sora’s eye twitched oddly. Find some other couple to watch make out?

‘Sora,’ Kairi started happily, ‘meet the infamous Roxiku duo.’ She gestured towards the blond. ‘In case you haven’t noticed already, this is Roxas Shirin.’ She pointed at the silver-haired girl. ‘And that is Riku Masaki.’ The blond waved at him, the girl merely smiled. ‘Together they’re, like, famous here at NAMI. If you’ve been to NAMI once, you’ve probably heard of these guys.’

Sora looked them over properly for the first time. The blond, Roxas, was in the same pleather coat as Axel. And Marluxia. Odd. The girl—Riku, was it?—was in some complicated grey and black punkish lolita dress, however. It was sleeveless, but she had on black armwarmer-type-things with grey buckles around them. The black dress zipped up the front and had grey trim and two grey belts, one around her waist and another one or two inches up from the first. She had on one black, knee-high boot that zipped up the side and had four grey buckles on it. The other boot was grey, ankle high and had a chain from the back to the front. She had three black buckles around her leg above it as well. There were chains looping from one buckle on her right wrist to her neck and another to the first belt on her waist. More chains looped around the (rather poofy; he shuddered just thinking of how many petticoats that girl had to wear) skirt of her dress, and one clipped to the side seam with a black cross charm dangling off it. Another chain connected the top-most grey buckle on her right leg to the lowest black buckle on her left leg. She also had a cross earring dangling from her left ear and a chain connected to a black stud in the cartilage connecting to the aforementioned black cross earring.

Roxas motioned towards the window ledge. ‘We might as well sit and talk, we’ve got a fifteen minute break.’

‘Actually,’ Marluxia interjected, ‘we came to ask Riku what needs to be set up at the Artist’s Alley and the Writer’s Way. Me and Axel are taking care of the alley booth and Olette has the writer’s booth covered.’

‘Oh. Uhm, the Yuken doujinshi go on the pink stands,’ Riku started. ‘The other doujin go on the table themselves. The example prints go in the binder and the extras go in the black file folders that should be stored out of sight. Bookmarks and postcards should be laid out on the table as well. The accesories go on the other side of the table. Tell Olette that the fanzines go on one side on the black stands, the Ki zines on the blue stands and the others on the white ones. And…that’s it. Me and Leon’ll stop by the alley around one to take over for an hour or so for commissions and stuff. Tell Olette that if she’s got any problems to go to Roxas, she made the fanzines.’

The two nodded and left, talking quietly with Olette.

Sora blinked. ‘You’ve got a booth in the Artist’s Alley AND the Writer’s Way? What are you, crazy?’

Roxas smiled and shook his head. ‘The fanzines in the Writer’s Way are collabs between me, Cloud, Demyx, Kairi and Olette.’ Sora raised an eyebrow and looked at Kairi, who whistled innocently. He’d never known that Kairi wrote fanfiction to that extent. ‘The only drawings in there are illustrations that happen like, once every one-shot or chapter. The things in the Artist’s Alley are drawn by Leon, Riku, Axel, Zexion, Larxene and Marluxia. The text in the doujin is written by me and the other writers.’ He laughed.

The group, minus Olette, Marluxia and Axel, sat down.

‘So,’ Sora started, ‘do you guys meet here every year, or what?’

Cloud sighed. ‘Let me explain. Me, Leon, Riku, Roxas, Kairi, Olette, Axel, Marluxia and four others called Namine, Zexion, Demyx, and Larxene that you haven’t met yet, make up the cosplay ring…group…whatever you want to call us, Sakuriné. We all met on the Sakuline forums. We’ve been going to NAMI for around, oh, five years at least for each of us.’

Leon started, as Cloud finished. ‘Roxas and Riku are pretty well known for their cosplaying efforts. We can all sew somewhat—‘ he gestured to the outfits that they were wearing. Excluding Kairi, she’d opted to leave Friday cosplay-free. ‘—but Riku and Namine are the real sewing otaku of the group.’ The silver-haired one elbowed Leon in the ribs.

‘You know I don’t like being called that, Leon.’

The brunet snorted in return. ‘It’s what you are, Riku. Don’t deny it.’

Sora leaned forward on his knees, turned slightly to face Cloud. ‘Kairi mentioned ‘Roxiku’. Who or what is that?’

‘Well,’ Cloud began, but he was interrupted by Riku.

‘Cloud, let me explain this one.’ She stuck her tongue out at Cloud. ‘Roxiku is the name that me and Roxas created for ourselves. And…yeah, we’re basically just a cosplaying duo although half the time it’s just one of us modeling and the other will take pictures. Err. Like today.’ She gestured vaguely at the area around them.

Kairi elbowed Sora in the side. ‘See?’ she proclaimed. ‘I told you there was something here at NAMI that wasn’t at nemu! Okay, and there's the fact that NAMI’s five days and nemu’s three.’

Roxas looked at his watch. ‘Oh, fifteen minutes is almost up.’ He stood. ‘Hey, Riku, we’d better get back to the photoshoot.’ He glanced at Cloud and Leon. ‘You two wanna join? I’m sure the fangirls will go crazy seeing all four of us here at the Yakon.’

The older blond and brunet shrugged, but they made no move to leave.

‘Hey, Sora,’ Kairi began, ‘wanna stay here and watch or do you wanna see something else?’

Sora smiled. ‘I’d like to see what this photoshoot is like. I’ve never seen anything so popular before at nemu that was this small. It seems interesting.’

‘Uhm, guys.’ They all looked at Riku, who had spoken up. ‘You may wanna clear up. The fangirls are coming back.’ He pointed at a mob of girls coming through the entrance. The group turned to see, and Leon and Cloud winced slightly.

‘Well, better start shooting, then.’ Kairi held her hand out. ‘Roxas, give me the camera, I’ll take the pictures and you can go pose with Riku.’ Roxas grumbled a little but still did as he was told, going back to the large, shiny chromatic window where Riku already was.

She slid the camera open, and yelled at the two to get in some sort of “suggestive position” as she put it. The two up front moved around a little before settling with Riku sitting on the ledge looking up slightly at Roxas and Roxas standing in front of Riku holding her chin in his hands.

There was a large squeal from behind them. Sora looked back, apprehensive, at the mob of fangirls that seemed to have come from nowhere in the past thirty seconds.

‘Kairi…’

‘Yeah?’ She was still focused on the digicam.

‘What exactly does Yakon stand for?’

‘It’s the yaoi-con area’s short form. The guys in Sakuriné are pretty famous around here.’

…alright then. Didn’t really need to know that. The bit about the Sakuriné guys, at least.

Roxas yawned. The first day at NAMIkun had gone pretty quickly, consisting mostly of photoshoots, panels, booths, video screening, photoshoots and getting caught in the halls by fangirls for pictures.

Sora, Kairi, Riku, Roxas, Leon, Cloud, Sephiroth, Axel and Marluxia were currently walking to their respective rooms in the Renaissance Hotel. All the people in Sakuriné had planned to book rooms there early, so luckily enough their rooms were all near each other. Sora and Kairi were in a double bed room, Riku and Roxas were sharing, Leon, Cloud and Sephiroth were in a tri-bed room, Namine and Larxene were splitting to costs to another double bed room and Marluxia, Axel, Demyx and Zexion were in a quad.

They’d made plans to change out of their cosplays(Riku had mentioned off-handedly that wearing so many chains got tiring after a while) and meet at Roxas and Riku’s room, due to the fact that Roxas had the PS2. And most of the games that they’d brought.

No matter when it was, NAMIkun always seemed the same every single year.

THEY LIVE IN CANADA BECAUSE I LIVE IN CANADA AND I'M THE ONE WRITING THIS. DX
this was written mainly so I can get back in shape with writing third person past tense.
and because I'm in love with the idea of riku in a dress.
and I know that Sora's mistaking riku for a girl here. he's going to find out the truth next chapter, I promise.
sakuline. it's pronounced like 'saku' from 'sakura' and 'line' from 'on-line'. sakurine is pronounced japanese-style, though.
I so totally wanna set up a sakurine site. and have it totally devoted to my fanfiction. xD ah, girlish dreams.
yeah. why is the con named after my penname? because I'm cheap like that and I couldn't think of anything else.
yeah. there's Yakon because anime north has yaoi north. this is based off my own con experiences, really
next chapter: enter larxene, namine, zexion, demyx...and the rest of 'Organization XIII'!
stick around, okay? I'd be really happy if you did. X3

edit (087/08/07): changed the mention of 'KH' to 'Yuken'.
That is all.
