Prologue
J.J leant over the basin. She felt sick. Spence was missing. She’d known splitting up
had been a bad idea and still she’d let him. She could have told him not to go, that it
was too dangerous. Tobias was unstable. Splitting up had spelt danger for them both.
Tears welled in her eyes as she thought of Reid trapped with Tobias. She wished she’d
told him how she felt. So many wasted opportunities and now she might never get
another chance. See might never see Reid again. The thought was too much, she broke
down.
Morgan tried to ignore the muffled sobs coming from the bathroom. He knew J.J

gorgeous. As she typed he thought about what he’d been planning before the report of
J.J and Reid’s disappearance had come in. He was going to tell her how he really felt.
How his remarks had been real and not a joke but he’d never been given a chance and
until Reid was found his plans were on standby……
Hotch watched Prentiss skim through Hankle’s diary. She was a great profiler but it

she’d just left. It was like the bulb had blown and there wasn’t going to be a new one
any time soon. He wondered how you could walk out of someone’s life and not look
back. He couldn’t even end his marriage
Hotch’s eyes weren’t the only ones trained on Emily. Gideon admired her
unflinching, unquestioning attitude. But that wasn’t all that he admired. He wondered
what she thought of him……..
Reid squinted in the bright light. As Raphael added more wood to the fire his mind
was on the other BAU members. One name stood out in his mind. J.J………
