With Dostoevsky open to the first page, Ben wondered if the real Henry Gale had liked to read. There hadn't been any books in his balloon, but then again, a man like Henry Gale would realize that when one crashed on a deserted island, certain niceties of civilization had to be forgone. It took a certain amount of practicality to pilot a hot air balloon around the world (though conceiving of the idea in the first place took a complete lack of it) and a practical man would burn his books to keep whatever lurked in the jungle at bay during the night.
Ben didn't feel like reading. The cold, fluorescent light in his cell -- the armory, they called it -- was too dim. Anyway, he'd left his glasses at home, and reading without them gave him a headache.
Still, he made the effort. He was a civilized man, after all.
