Long Day part2

Doctor Akagi led me to the locker/changing room and showed
me how to operate the palm operated locker. It had my name written
on it clearly. Inside was a plugsuit, similar in design to Rei’s but where
Rei’s was white, mine was jet black, and where Rei’s was black mine was
dark green. The A-10 clips were also green. The trim was silver and
acted as a highlight.

Doctor Akagi left shortly afterwards. I stripped in absolute privacy and was
halfway through shuffling in through the neck of the suit when Rei arrived
and proceeded to undress.

I took a breath and concentrated on the task at hand. I think its
a fair indicator of my powers of concentration at the time that she was
ready before me. At least I wasn’t staring. I was getting used to it.

A short while later I was finished. I touched the button on the sleeve and the suit
hissed as it pressurised. I looked in nearby mirror and nearly fainted.

The predominantly black suit, black hair and red eyes contrasted sharply
with my pale skin and made me look positively evil but at the same time
jaw-droppingly beautiful. The funny thing was I was more comfortable wearing
a skin-tight plugsuit than I was a skirt.

There might be some advantages to this after all.’

I managed to tear myself away from the image and headed towards the EVA
cages, stretching on the way.

Doctor Akagi and Rei were waiting for me outside.

“So, what are we doing Doctor?” I asked

“We will be running a simple Sync test with Unit 02.” she answered.

That’s exactly what she said before Rei’s failed activation
test in Unit 00. A sudden wave of fear came over me as
I remembered the accident. The bullet to the brain as
the EVA rejected Rei and the bone crunching impact
of the ejecting plug slamming into the wall.

I began to feel sick.

“What happens if she goes berserk?” I asked nervously

“We cut the power. Rei will be on standby in Unit 00 as well.
Unit 02 is also the least likely to go berserk.
There is little cause for worry.”

I didn’t feel much better.

She opened the door to the cage.

Next to me the massive red form of Unit 02 towered 30 stories above me.

“Jesus Christ! She’s huge!” I exclaimed, mouth wide open in awe.

Memories and television pictures are one thing but to actual see
something that big with my own eyes made me feel very small.

“That’s what everyone says when they first see an EVA up close.” Doctor Akagi remarked.

“Rei get into Unit 00” She ordered.

“Yes ma’am” Rei replied softly and headed to Unit 00 which was
standing to the left of Unit 02.

I followed Doctor Akagi into the lift.

I think she noticed my apprehension as the lift
headed up towards Unit 02s entry plug.

“Can you remember Rei’s accident”? she asked.

“Yes ma’am” I answered in the same manner as Rei.

“Unit 02 has never gone berserk. It is the safest Unit to test in.” she responded.

“Thanks, that helps” I said, not sounding as if I believed it.

We continued in silence.

She helped me into the plug.

“I have to monitor the test from the control room.” she said as she closed

the hatch.

I was locked, alone, in the giant white cylinder. My mind began to ponder all possible eventualities.

What if she goes berserk?

I was nearly killed the last time.

Crushed by Unit 00 when the plug is ejected.

Stamped on by a berserk EVA.

Mind Ripped to pieces.’

None of them were in anyway pleasant.

After what seemed like forever the plug rotated around me as it descended
into Unit 02’s spine. It creaked loudly as it came to a halt.

No going back now’

The orange LCL began to trickle in.

Here it comes.’

As the LCL rose above my head I inhaled the fluid. I coughed momentarily and
suddenly felt sick. I tried to spit the foul liquid out but obviously failed.

I’ll never get used to the taste of this stuff.’ I groaned mentally.

Doctor Akagi’s voice began to run through the start-up procedure

::LCL oxygenated::

The orange liquid flashed clear. All was going well

::Power systems to external::

The interface flashed rainbow colours and began to come online.

::All systems nominal.::

I began to feel a slight tingle on my scalp from the clips

:: Synchronisation Start::

The user interface continued to flash rainbow colours.
I noticed a slight headache building in the back of my head.

::Safety interlocks released, all systems nominal, approaching Absolute Borderline in..

3…

2.::

My headache was getting worse. It felt like a knife to the head.

“1..

::Absolute Borderline achieved.::

Not again.’

I grabbed my right arm.

::Synchronisation achieved and rising within acceptable limits.::

Thank God for that.’

I relaxed instantly.

::All systems nominal::

I let out a deep breath in the LCL making bubbles in the fluid.
All the pent up fear and anxiety released.

“How are you feeling?” Doctor Akagi asked over the intercom.

“Fine I guess. I have a splitting headache.”

“Were using Rei’s operator interface from Unit 00. Its not perfect.

You’re brainwave patterns are different so we will have to compensate for that.”

I began to focus on the test. I concentrated on the EVA trying to
‘feel’ it. That was what Rei had always been told to do.

The headache began to subside as I did.

I could ‘feel’ the armour and the cage restraints pressing on my shoulder.
It was difficult to describe, almost like I was feeling it through a thick
jumper. The more I thought about the feelings the more defined they
became. Behind it all was a vague presence, proud yet …regretful.

We spent the next three hours running though induction procedures
and fine tuning the interface program. I began to relax in the EVA
even taking the time to view the cage. It seemed smaller from the
EVA’s perspective, naturally. Unit 00 was standing beside me with Rei
going through the same tests.

Doctor Akagi’s voice came over the intercom once more..

“Unit’s 00 and 02, the test is complete, prepare for ejection.”

The interface went dark as the plug jerked backwards. I felt momentarily
dizzy as the nerve connections were severed.

The plug stopped and the LCL began to drain out.

I climbed out of the open hatch and began to wretch the fluid from
my lungs and stomach.

I hope this gets easier’ I thought as I coughed litres of LCL up.

I dripped LCL as I made my way back to the locker room. The LCL had made
my hair stick to my head.

Rei followed shortly afterwards.

I climbed out of the plugsuit and folded it neatly leaving my clips beside it.

I showered to get rid of the LCL in my hair but despite using
a shampoo that smelled like industrial paint stripper, I couldn’t
get rid of the smell. I dried myself and put the school uniform back on
as it was all I had to wear.

A short while later myself and Rei were standing in the control room
with Dr. Akagi and a brunette who could only have been Maya.

“What were the scores?” I asked knowing my life depended on this

“Rei scored 42.4. A three point improvement over last week.” she said.

“Maya do we have Aoife’ s sync ratio data yet?” she asked.

“Hai sempai!” Maya responded enthusiastically before handing her another clipboard

I crossed my fingers.

She began to flip through the pages as I swallowed a lump in my throat.

“Aoife, you recorded a ratio of 22.5. Enough to pilot if necessary.
You will be back-up until the fifth child arrives.” She smiled slightly
knowing what this meant, or at least what I thought it meant.

I released a breath I didn’t know I was holding.

An hour later I was sitting in a canteen nearby waiting to meet my
commanding officer. I had an idea who they might be but it wasn’t
certain. They were supposed to have been here 45 minutes earlier.

That meant I had time to have a simple dinner, which consisted
of a vegetable stir-fry and ramen washed down with coke.

I never liked canteen food and I never will.

Okay, Why post a shitfic?

Well, I'm not sure. I'm kind of interested to see how well it would have done, had it been posted back when I'd written it. Fortunately, I never plucked up the courage to do so.

They say every First Fic is a shitfic, and, if you're reading this, you'll probably agree. the only things this has going for it is Spelling and Grammer. there is Mary-Sue... There is Sixth Child...There is blatant ripping off of other peoples ideas. It is pretty horrible.

Thing is... I did it all in about a week (There're twelve more chapters available. I'd rather not post them, but, like Jackass, I will if enough people ask). It is horrid. I've been told I've improved a good deal since this was written..:P

But maybe, if someone gets reviewed by Me, or EvSoc, they can see this and smile... and know that my first fic sucked ass too...

Also good practice for those who want to try and give 'proper' constructive reviews.
