Epilogue
It’s been three months. Three months and Avril was still on Kyo’s mind. So many questions that were left unanswered. Like where her mother and siblings. And...could he have helped her? If he had stopped her from leaving the trailer and instead called an ambulance, would she be alive? If he had made her bandage the wound? If he had left earlier and not waited around at the hotel...If, if, if...
“Come on Kyo, lighten up. It’s a dance. Not a funeral,” Yuki joked. After a moment though, his face drew together again and he swallowed as Kyo looked away. “Hey Kyo, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to...”
“It’s okay. Go on and dance with Tohru. After all, that is the point of this,” Kyo gestured around at the decorations. It was the last dance of the year. The End of School dance. He’d been looking forward to it for months, until the trip. Yuki sighed, giving Kyo a small smile, and went off to the dance floor with Tohru.
Kyo walked through the courtyard and ran his fingers over random benches or trees. The night was warm and the moon shone high in the sky. Stars glittered and clouds scudded quietly through the night. He swallowed, going down the familiar paths and into the park where he wandered the grounds aimlessly.
Kyo didn’t know how long he had stayed out there, but he had grown tired and was getting ready to head back to the house when he heard a sound. He paused, then headed towards it. A tree stood in front of him and he rounded it carefully, senses on alert. And even in that state, Kyo was shocked at what he saw.
Naomi Suzuki. Kyo’s Ex-Girlfriend.
He hadn’t seen her in a long, long time. They had lost touch. Broken up. Something like that. He couldn’t exactly put his finger on it. Carefully Kyo approached her. His foot settled down on a twig and it snapped. He stopped as she looked up, her eyes finding his.
“Kyo-kun.”
“Hey, Naomi.” Kyo walked over to her, sitting down next to her. Her eyes were puffy and he could see silver trails down her cheeks. She had been crying. “What’s wrong?”
She sighed and rested her chin on her knees, wrapping her arms tightly around her legs. “Nothing, Kyo-kun. Nothing that would interest you,” she muttered.
“Hey, don’t start that, okay? You did this before. Now tell me. What’s wrong?” He asked. She shook her head and he reached out, touching her shoulder. “Come on Naomi, what’s wrong?”
“He...he hurt me.”
“Who hurt you? How did they hurt you?” Kyo asked, turning to face her. She looked at him and he saw the dark discoloration around her eye and split lip for the first time.
“He invited me to your school’s dance and I went cause I thought it’d be fun, you know? Well...we never made it there. He tried to...do things with me. But I refused. So he...he did this to me,” she whispered, gesturing to her face. Kyo swallowed.
“God Naomi...I’m sorry,” he whispered. She hiccupped quietly then leaned against him.
“What’re you doing out here?” she asked after a few moments.
“I...it didn’t feel right in there. I have a lot on my mind lately,” he told her. She glanced up at me curiously and he sighed. “I was kinda...dating this girl when we went on a field trip. And...she ended up dying. And I just feel like I could’ve done something to help her.”
Naomi stayed quiet for awhile and he finally glanced at her. “Something like that happened to me awhile ago. My mom. She got real sick but kept telling me that she was okay. I listened to her. She died a few days later and from that day I keep wondering if I had called 9-1-1 or someone, would she be alive? The feeling lasts forever I think, or at least for the three years since and there’s nothing you can really do about it. My mind knows that there was nothing I could do, but my heart seems to refuse that explanation. I’ve learned to just try and live my life as normally as possible and push the doubts aside,” she explained.
Kyo looked at her and she smiled feebly, yawning. “Thanks Naomi...that makes me feel...better...” he told her. Her smile widened and he wrapped an arm around her as she rested her head on his shoulder. “What...happened? Between us, I mean.”
She shrugged sleepily. “I don’t know. It was too complicated? Going to different schools and all. Different backgrounds. I’m not exactly sure myself...i really don’t know anymore. It just seemed like the right choice at the time. Im starting to think it was a stupid idea in the first place. Us breaking up has only made things worse. I actually think that we should…” she trailed off and Kyo smiled as he looked at her. She had drifted off to sleep. Yawning, he rested my head on top of hers and followed suit, for once a peaceful, dreamless, restful sleep wrapped around him.
