Chapter one

Jr. High

September, 17, 2004

I twirled my hair... Geez. That sounds boring. Let me phraze it better. I was standing at the bus stop wrapping a lcok of my dark hair around my finger. I sighed heavily. It was the first day of school. I was wearing a lilac, perriwinkle, and sliverish flowery shirt. With a perriwinkle skirt. Also a cute pair of boots. Blue with silver accents. It was alwfully cold. "KAREN!" I heard some one call. I looked over to see my friend Josafine. She was mexican and her name was pronounced Ho-sa-feen. I stamped my feet. "Seventh grade getting to ya?" She asked. As she smothed down her short dark hair. I forced a smile and nodded. "Oh, don't worry, Kar, You'll do fine!" Josefine said. "No, I wont. Don't you get it. Every year I only barly pass. I mean my hitory and socail studies grades are through the floor!" I said.

"But this is Jr. High. Things will be better!" Josefine said. Seh straightened her red skirt. It was easy for her to say. She aced everything. And she knew allabout her history and others. But not me. I had no Idea about my history. And surpriengly neither did Josefine. The bus pulled. Up. "Maybe..." I said mostly to myself. We walked into the bus. We saw our friend Millie. "Hey mil!" I said.

Millie looked up from the book she was reading. "Okay, this year me and you are going to ace history!" She said. She was holding some sort of year book. Verry old.

"So you think looking at a 100 year old year book for our school wil help? 'I asked.

"No, I think reading a Sventy year old year book for some school in cincinati will help," She said. She set the book in her bag as I sat next to her and JoSefina sat in back of us. She got onto her knees to look over the bavk of the seat. "It was my great grandmothers! Her name was, Margrate Mildred Kitteridge. Mildred. Just like me. She died last year, remember," Millie said.

"Yeah," Josefine and I said together. Millie had only met her great gandmother once. And they clicked. They were just alike. And Millie never got to do much with her. Seh cried for days after Her great granmother's death.

"But this wil help," She said. "Because it has alot on the great depression. Imagine that! See is says: 'Students, Kit Kitteridge, Stirling howard, and ruthie smithens took thanksgiving meals to the soup kitchen. Thanksgiving 1934,' amazing, huh?" Millie added. Tears filled her eyes. "My mom is trying to contact old stirling. She thinks that I should get to meet him."

I nodded. So did Josefine. Soon we were at school. "Jr. High..." I sighed.

I ran into the house. "MOM!" I screamed. My mother ran into the entery way, of our new york city house. "This is a victorian style house, right?" I asked. I was quickly taking off my coat. "Yes," My mother said. She sighed, glad to now that it was not an emergancy. "Why?"

"YES!" I cried. "For my history asignment I have to write a paper on the turn of the century!" I said.

"Oh then maybe you might want to know about who lived in this house," My mom said. sEh smiled.

"Oh yes!" I said. I took of my shoes and ran into the living room. My mother went up the stairs. "I will be right back!" She called. I sat down on the couch and waited. I couldn't belive my luck. My mother came down. "Okay, come with me," She said. I followed my mom upstairs. I was an only child and i hardly ever went into the attic. But when we got there it was beautiful.

"Oh my lord!" I said. It was beautiful. There was a small library area and three little cabins. I ran into the cabins. wonderful. "Mother, may I live up here?" I asked.

"Yes. All summer while you were at camp we were having this placed fixed up. YOur Great, great, grandmother, Samantha lived up here. WOuld you like to learn more about Samantha?" My mom said. She walked over to the little library. I walked over wiht her. We sat down at a couch. my mom got out a stck of book.

"Today we will read five entry's from Samantha's diary," My mom said. I smiled. I snuggled up to her as she began to read:

"January, 15, 1905

Samantha

January, 16, 1905

Dear Diary,

I am shaking as I write. Nellie;s parents have died. She is going to be living wiht her uncle in new york. I know I maybe should be a little happy to have nellie back. But no. Her parents are dead. And with mine dead too I must help her. She said that she will see me as soon as she can. I hope soon...

Samantha

January, 26, 1905

Dear diary,

I found where nellie has been. She has not been coming to visit me like she promised. TO day I went searching ofr her uncle. It was scary. I found that nellie's uncle had left her. So she was sent to an orphange. It's Call Cold Rock. I don't think that sounds verry nive. I must tell uncle gard. But will I get in trouble. No nellie is in trouble. I must think of her.

Samantha

January, 28, 1905

Dear Diary,

We saw nellie today. It was wonderful but tiirilbe. I brought her gifts but the mean miss frouchy took them wasy from her. I am sure she ate all of the cookies. And nellie bridget or jenny dind't even have a bite! But the worst part was that nellie looked terrible. She was verry thin, and she hair was chopped short. I will get to see her on sunday. BUt that is entirly to long. I have to wait two whole days.

Samantha

January, 30, 1905

Dear diary,

I got to see nellie again. And I will tomarrow. She take out the ashes at three and I can see her then. I am verry excited. I can't wait to see her. And we will be able to talk freely. Without hushed tones. Well it is verry late, so I must rush off to bed.

Samantha"

And that was where my mother stoped. Tears had spilled out of my eyes. "Poor nellie!" I said. "And Samantha!" My mother hugged me.

"Don't worry hon. Same time tomarrow and we will continue to unfold the mystery of Samantha and nellie?" My mom said.

"YES!" I said instantly. My mother hugged me tigher and then she went downstairs to put on dinner. I wanted to sneak a peek at what happened next but I knew I must wait. It was liek an exciting book. But better. I got up and went into a cabin. I fluffed the bed. i sighed as I droped onto it. Samantha has maybe once laid here. BUt what about nellie. I knew where cold rock was. It was now a museum. I decided that tomarrow me and my mom could read there. I got up and looked in the miorr. I smiled at me. My big brown eys were red from crying.
