Chapter Five: Classroom Introductions
'Beep beep beep, beep beep beep'
A hand raised up and pushed down lightly on the 'off' button of the alarm clock. Karin groaned in protest at the familiar sound. It was a dreadful sound, almost like hearing the alarm to sound off your own untimely death or something. With a minute or two passing, Karin shifted and sat up in her bed. She yawned and rubbed her eyes drowsily.
"Is summer over already? ...It's so hard to believe...Oh well."
With that said, Karin got up and started to get ready. She brushed her hair then ate and brushed her teeth as well. After all that was said and done, she put on her uniform and gathered her bag up with her bento already made the night before. Everything was set for the school day ahead. As routine Karin walked out of her room and headed straight to the door. She glanced back over her shoulder at the seemingly empty house.
"I'm going now! Be back later!"
Karin called out. Even though her family knew she was returning to school today, she thought it wouldn't hurt to let them know she was going. She shrugged at the silent response and opened the door. The instant she stepped out however, Karin noticed Syra standing outside the house. He was already dressed in his uniform with a book bag slung over his shoulder. Karin blinked dumbfounded for a moment before actually remembering the reason why he was staying here. It was just that since Syra hadn't even shown his face for practically two days, Karin sort of forgot he was staying with them. Though she should be used to this behavior from Ren.
"Oh...Hello. Er...you're ready to go?"
Karin greeted Syra awkwardly. He was leaning against the house slightly with his head back and his eyes closed. At the sound of her voice, he opened his eyes slowly and looked at her. With a faint nod he stepped away from the house and waited for Karin to lead the way. Karin wondered why he was being so quiet today. From what she gathered he was pretty out spoken.
"Alright. Let's go..."
She said under her breath as she walked by him and started to lead the way to her school. She knew the way completely out of memory so it was no hassle getting there. She was lucky today to have missed meeting up with Kenta, which would have resulted in her having to explain Syra. While walking, it was mostly silent yet peaceful. Finally, Syra spoke up which startled Karin a little bit.
"Today's a good day to be out. The cloud's are locking the sun...it almost look like we should e expecting rain."
Syra's tone seemed different today compared to the last time they spoke. It was more soft and soothing rather than rude and obnoxious. Karin glanced to her side at him and nodded in agreement. She didn't have anything to say other than a small "it won't stay like this for long" comment. Syra only shrugged at that. Thankfully the walk didn't last too long and they soon arrived at the school. As soon as they entered, some teachers greeted Syra and welcomed him to the school. The students all seemed intimidated by him and kept a distance. Karin followed him for the most part while he checked in to make sure he was now considered a student. Once they were done with that Karin lead him to their homeroom. She figured that he and her family had pulled some strings in order to get them every class together.
"This is our homeroom class..."
Karin stated while giving Syra a chance to look about the room. He didn't say anything and followed her closely when she went to her desk. She didn't know where he would be seated yet, so she offered him to sit at hers for the meantime.
"No, thanks. I'll just ask the teacher when she gets in."
Syra declined her offer and fanned his hand dismissively. Karin stared at him with a confused expression for a brief moment until she heard Maki's voice ringing from behind her.
"Karin!"
Maki wrapped her arms around Karin from behind in a gentle hug. Karin smiled and turned to face her friend once she was done.
"Hey Maki. Er, you remember Syra don't you?"
Karin gestured to him in hopes to start introducing him confidently. He was leaning against her desk with his arms crossed while looking at all the classmates he'd become familiar with eventually. Maki nodded quickly and gave a brief wave to him.
"Sure do. Welcome to the class, you'll love it here! Believe me."
Maki smiled and seemed to act proud of the class. Some of the other girls walked over and greeted Syra as well. The boys all acted as they usually did to a new student. They just stood in the distance, giving him side glances every now and then wondering if he would introduce himself first or not. Syra noticed this and decided to get off with a good start. He excused himself from the girls and headed over to the guys and introduced himself. They did the same and welcomed him to the class briefly. It wasn't much, they just spoke of few things for a few minutes and then took their seats when the teacher came in. While Karin and the other students sat down at their desks, Syra went up to the teacher and asked her where it is he should sit and what not.
Of course before he could sit, Syra had to introduce himself in front of the class despite the fact that he knew everyone's names already and vise versa. Still he did it anyways and then sat down at a desk far from Karin's. While Karin was looking around in amazement at how little...well, no questions she had been asked about Syra she noticed Kenta wasn't in class yet. She decided to give it little thought for now and focused on her studies until the end of the day.

After School...
The school day had been easier than Karin had expected. No one really asked about Syra seeing as he was the one to speak for himself and Karin didn't even really have to teach him anything. She lead him to their classes and he'd take care of the rest on his own. Was he trying to give her the guilt trip or something? After all, it was her job to show him around and such. The entire day seemed to go all too well for her, but she didn't want to complain about it. Kenta had never shown up at school either, which was odd since he had been fine the day before. Karin couldn't help but feel responsible for his absence.
It was still cloudy out, giving the day a dark look. It seemed later than what it was. While Karin was caught up in her thoughts and suspicions, Syra lead the way back to her house. Once again not much was being said, if anything. Karin soon snapped out of her thoughts and paid attention to where she was going. She then decided to try and at least make small talk with Syra.
"So, what do you think? Is it any different from your other schools?"
There was a short pause between her question and his answer, so the air instantly seemed less tense.
"I think it's more interesting. Well, I thought anyways. If everyday is as uneventful as this one, I'd say it's just the same as my other schools."
Karin rubbed her arm and began to think Syra was only looking for fun out of all this. Either way, she didn't want the conversation to end at that.
"Well, usually it is more eventful. Lots of things happen, but I guess it just depends on if you're looking for amusement or not. I mean...last year was more than enough for me..."
"Is that because you're a vampire? Not like it makes much a difference if you're human or not."
Karin stopped walking and stared at Syra blankly. Did he really not know what kind of vampire she is? After he realized she wasn't walking nor talking, Syra stopped and looked over his shoulder at her.
"What? Did that offend you or something?"
Karin took a minute to answer him, shaking her head slightly.
"No, that's not it. I was just thinking on it, that's all..."
She answered before catching up to him and then continuing on their way home. As they drew near to her house, Karin caught herself wondering about Kenta's absence today. They passed his home and she tried to get a good look at it, hoping to see if Kenta was home or not, but she couldn't get a good enough view at the moment. She didn't want Syra to leave her behind or something. For now she'd just wait to see him tomorrow or at work. If he didn't show up at work, then she'd be more concerned.
Arriving at her house, Karin let out a sigh of relief. The first day of school had gone smoothly. At one point she wondered if it was Syra's doing. That'd e impossible though...Well, she thought anyways. Once they had gotten home, Syra left to his room and Karin was left alone to do her homework assignment. It wasn't anything big or difficult since it was still the first day, but if she finished it now she could find something better to do with the rest of her day. She grabbed a pencil and turned on a lamp as she got to work.
During her progress on her homework, Syra came out of his room and sat in the living room. It was dark inside thanks to the clouds outside, so the lamp was only helping out a small amount. Syra was quiet, but it was awkward for Karin to have him sitting there while she did her work. She could only handle it for so long before saying something.
"Did you finish all your work?"
She asked, not looking up to see him. She was trying to focus on her paper, but she'd already read the same sentence 20 times.
"Yes. It's all very simple. Why, are you having trouble with it?"
Karin scowled and decided that Syra was beginning to act himself already. She looked up from her paper and gave him a frown.
"Not at all, I was just being distracted. So...why are you out here?"
Syra chuckled a little bit at what Karin said, staring off in another direction with his hand placed delicately against his chin. His leg crossed over the other and his other hand rested on the arm of the sofa. His lightly colored eyes emitted a soft glow compared to the darkness of the room and even if the room was lit, he had a brightness about him.
"Surely I don't have to sit in my room all day. Besides, your family should be up soon and I wouldn't mind having an intelligent discussion today."
Syra remarked with a sly tone. Karin huffed to herself and turned to concentrate on her paper once more. If he thought she was unintelligent then she wouldn't speak to him. Not like he did much to strike a conversation today anyways. At the silence she gave him, Syra only smirked and laughed. After a few more minutes of quiet company, Syra walked over to Karin and hovered over her shoulder. Karin couldn't focus with hims standing there so she quickly snapped her head at him and gave an expression of disapproval.
"Do you mind? You finished your work, great. That doesn't mean I can't finish mine."
Syra looked at her and shrugged. He didn't say anything in return and walked away back to his room. Maybe he'd gotten tired of waiting for Karin's family to get up or maybe he was bluffing about that anyways. With him gone either way Karin was able to finish her work quickly. She snickered to herself slightly knowing exactly when her family should be stirring back to life. She figured Syra had been comparing them to his parents or something...The first one up besides herself in this house was usually Anju. Sometimes Ren on the rare occasion that he comes home at night and stay up till sunrise.
Still, it would be a while before her mother woke up...Karin sighed with boredom knowing that she wouldn't be able to go outside today. Besides, if it rained she didn't want to get soaked and it still looked like it was going to. She groaned in frustration as she headed to her room to try and find something to occupy her time. As usual she ended up just laying in her bed until she eventually dozed off. She dreamed of nothing fascinating and only woke once during the night, wondering how she'd slept for so long. Boredom had such a toll on her, but she figured she'd just leave her family be and sleep until morning anyways. Besides, if she could avoid having to keep up appearances in front of Syra, it'd save her some stress. After dozing off again, she made the last thought of hoping Syra wouldn't act obnoxious at school the next day, maybe he'd stay quiet like before...
I know, I know. . . It's been forever since I last updated. x'3 I could choose about a hundred excuses, but I don't have an excuse other than I got bored with my own story. x'D Guess that's not a good thing, but people kept favoriting it, so I figure I should finish it. So, here's the longest chapter so far and I plan on finishing this up soon without rushing it. I even discussed how I should end it, so...maybe some of you will like it, maybe some of you won't. Can please 'em all.
Anyways, review please and that's all for now. I'll try to update soon. x3 The more reviews I get, the quicker I'll update, honest. It motivates me.
