Chapter One - resistance
“SIT!” The birds in all the surrounding trees squawked and leapt from the branches, following a loud crash somewhere in the forest. More shouting followed, and a young teenage girl ran from the trees, dragging a backpack and a bicycle with her. “I’m going home!” She screamed. “And don’t even think of coming to follow me because it’s not gunna work!” She leant the bike by a well, and stood on the side, just as a tiny little redheaded boy with a huge bushy tail bounded up to her.

“Kagome!” He cried and the girl hesitated, before turning to look at him.

“I’m sorry Shippo.” She sighed, with a wan smile. “I just… can’t cope with him when he’s like this! I’ll be back in a few days. I promise.”

Shippo only sighed and hopped up on the side of the well just as Kagome jumped down. “I hope so.” He whispered. A moment later, a red-clad maniac jumped from the same place where Kagome and Shippo had shown their faces and leapt up to the well.

“Did she go down already!?” He spotted the bike and grabbed the fox-demon by the tail and lifted him up to his face. “Why didn’t you stop her!?”

“What was I meant to do?” Shippo shrieked, waving his arms like some deranged windmill. “You were the one that made her mad!”

Inuyasha sighed and dropped Shippo on the floor, staring down into the gloom. “You want I should go after her?” He asked with his voice apprehensive.

“Do you have a death wish?” The little fox demon cried. “Kagome’s much scarier than you when she’s angry. And it’s you she’s mad at.”

Inuyasha crossed his arms. “I didn’t do anything wrong this time. She’s just… being awkward today… and yesterday… and the day before…” His face became worried. “What could be wrong with her?”

“Don’t look at me!” Shippo stood up and wiped off his little fur waistcoat. “It’s not my fault. And I doubt if Sango or Miroku are to blame either.”

Concerned, Inuyasha, peeked down at the well again. “I’m going to head down there… there’s nothing we can do here without her anyways. She’ll come around.”

Shippo just stared at him. “You’re suicidal.”

Kagome paced around her room. Damn. Damn, damn, damn! Everyone was in bed and she was too restless to sleep. Her stomach was in knots, and she couldn’t think of anything but Inuyasha, and how guilty she felt for leaving them all in the feudal era, while she came back to her own time. She had had a nice soothing bath, some real food, and then sat on the sofa, watching some television, but she didn’t enjoy any of it. Her mother chatted to her about anything that had happened while she was in the warring states era, but she didn’t listen. Her brother Souta had dragged her to his room to play some video games, but she didn’t even bother to try to win. She had tried to study, but her thoughts wouldn’t focus into anything useful. All there was was Inuyasha, and his damn selfish mule-headedness, and the damn feelings she had towards him. She couldn’t help it. She regretted leaving, but he was just being a total idiot, and she was not in the frame of mind to cope with his stupidity. He wouldn’t follow; he was too stubborn… and always would be. It was part of his nature, and luckily, Kagome loved him for it.

Without any further thought, she kicked off her clothes and pulled herself into her bed, throwing the quilt cover over her head, staring at the pink gloom. She could still see the light through the fabric, as since she had met Naraku, she had been too afraid to sleep with it off. It was costing her mother a fortune, but it was only when Inuyasha wasn’t there to stand guard over her. She felt safe with Inuyasha around, despite how much of an asshole he was.

Slowly, she slipped into a fitful sleep, and she didn’t hear her bedroom door open, and then close. Nor the soft footsteps over the carpet that marked Inuyasha’s entrance. He looked at the clothes on the floor, knelt down and picked up her shirt with a shaking hand. The scent that wafted up to him made his head spin in an odd joy and he held it close to him. Kagome, are you asleep? He stood up and sat on her bed, letting the shirt fall back on the floor.

“I’m sorry Kagome.” He whispered gently. “I annoyed you again… to the extent that you had to leave. I never meant for any of this to happen.” He toyed with the beads around his neck and closed his eyes. “I don’t think you understand the danger anymore… It’s getting worse out there… and I only snap because I worry. I worry about the others and most of all… I worry about you. I keep wanting you to stay with me, but I want you to get away so you’re safe. I like coming here when you’re sleeping so I can watch you sleep… listen to you breathe.” He opened his eyes and looked over to her. “But for the last few weeks… when I sit here… talking to you… all I can think about is touching you.” He reached out and pulled the quilt from her face. Her eyes were open, and her cheeks were red.

“Touching me?” She whispered.

“K-Kagome!” His eyes widened for a moment but then, after getting over his surprise, he scowled. “You weren’t asleep! You let me say all that and you weren’t asleep!”

Kagome sat up. “Touching me?” She repeated, eyes wet. “What do you mean by that?”

Inuyasha stared at her for a moment, not saying anything but then without a moment’s hesitation, he moved forwards and caught Kagome’s mouth with his own, holding her tightly to him. Her eyes widened in surprise but then she gently closed them and returned the kiss, slowly and carefully leaning backwards, Inuyasha falling with her. Her head hit the pillow and Inuyasha’s hand crept from her waist, over her ribs to cup her breast, as the other rested at the back of her neck, supporting her head. Kagome felt his hands leave a trail of fire along her skin and she arched her back, knowing that she wanted more, but she was no where near brave enough to take it. Inuyasha was the same.

The love he felt for Kagome was strong, yet strange and it made his head spin. He wanted her, he knew it, but he knew what the consequences may be. She was from the future, and he was from the past, there was no way either of them could be truly together. But it was good to pretend, to forget the pain of what happened to Kikyo, and losing her again and again. He only wanted to love Kagome, but he hated the injustice of everything. He loved her, and she seemed t4o love him in return but it wasn’t enough. Love couldn’t beat time. At one point Kagome would have to say goodbye, and it would kill him.

Inuyasha sat up, suddenly, staring out of Kagome’s window, silently. Kagome sat up too.

“Inuyasha?”

“I can’t do this Kagome.” He replied. “Not now.” And he stood up. “I’m going back. Don’t wait too long before coming back.” And he went to leave.

“Oh now you don’t!” Kagome stood up. “SIT!”

He sat. Or fell… headfirst… hard.

“Explain… right now!”

“Don’t make me.” He grumbled. He lifted his head up again and looked in agony at the girl who stood before him, in her underwear, seeming not to notice. “Kagome… I don’t want to lose you.”

She shook her head. “Inuyasha… you’re not going to lose me.”

“This is your time… I belong in the feudal era… if anything more than friendship… or the occasional kiss… happens… then I won’t be able to live if I lose you. Not now… not ever.”

Kagome fell to her knees and stared at the half-demon in front of her, eyes welling with tears.

“I love you Inuyasha.” She sighed. “And I promise I will never leave you.”

I promise...
