Twilight was lingering in the sky when Harry finally stepped out the back door of number 12 Grimmauld place and into the garden that Hermione had painstakingly salvaged over the past few months.
"I'm beginning to feel like the 'other man.'" He allowed petulance to edge his playful comment.
Hermione glanced up. She smiled at him, and returned to carefully pressing the dirt around the little plant she had just placed into the ground. "Jealous, are you?" she teased.
He stalked over and crouched down next to her. "Yes. I saw the way you caressed that plant just now. And how you sifted the peat through your fingers."
Her laugh spilled through the darkening garden. She smelled of earth and mint and basil…and contentment. He took her hand away from the plant and rubbed it between his, brushing off the soft dark loam that clung to her fingertips. Hermione sighed at his touch.
"It's getting too dark to do much more here, Hermione," he admonished, his voice dusky and rich, like the dirt he cleaned off her hands.
She snaked her hand around Harry's head and pulled his mouth to hers. He settled forward onto his knees. "There're plenty of things to do in a garden in the dark," she informed him. She sifted his black hair through her fingers, and caressed his back before pulling him to the ground, pinning him in the soft dirt.
A slow grin crossed his face. "I can't wait to find out what they are."
