Elfen Lied

Chapter Five: Rot

His eyes turned wide and instantly, without question he pulled Nyu off him and placed her on her bed looking into her eyes, sweat beading on his forehead. “Lucy?” He demanded. Nyu looked up at him puzzled and smiled, a small childish giggle coming from her mouth.

“Kouta!” She said happily, touching his face with a clumsy hand. “Happy Kouta?” It was a question, but Kouta couldn’t reply. He stood up and turned his pale face toward Nana, questions dancing in his obsidian irises.

“What’s happened to her? Why has she gone back to the way she was?” He asked, voice low but strangely soft. Yuka shifted uncomfortably and looked over at where Nana stood by the door eyes wide and bright with innocence and fear. She wasn’t sure what had happened when they had left, but for some unknown reason everything was different now. It was as if things had turned back to normal… but… not quite. There was a heavy tension on the air, something pressing in on all sides of the room, restricting breath and causing hearts to speed up to a frantic pace. Heads pounded and eyes watered, but in such a subtle way that no one thought any of it, it was like the slow progression of a disease, slipping into the body and destroying the immune system to ensure its own survival. It was disguised well, but Nana felt it rippling through her chest and back and somehow slicing the invisible tendons to her strange arms, rendering her vectors useless. She froze completely and shrieked, the pain clawing through her spine and she fell to her knees.

Yuka gasped and ran towards her, but she immediately felt a force grip her by the hair and slam her face into the laminated flooring.

Kouta moved away from Nyu and raced to where Yuka lay, now unconscious, his eyes widening in absolute fear and he heard a giggle behind him, causing him to turn, terrified of what he might see. Nyu looked straight at Kouta, clambered to her feet and wagged her index finger at him, as if telling off a naughty child. “Bad Kouta.” She whispered and she wrapped two clear vectors around his throat cutting off the air.

“What?... Nyu!” He gasped, his fingernails beginning to dig into the wood beneath him. He rasped and his eyes met hers, seeing the crazed half existence she was once again subject to. As his chest and throat began to burn and vision started to swim, his eyes became desperate. Still staring at Kouta, Nyu’s eyes widened and she let out a wail, stricken with childish loss and pain and the vectors faded, Nyu running into the corner of the room, her hands shaking as she tried to fold in on herself. She began to chant, horribly, a single word over and over again, but it was too submersed in her tears for Kouta to hear what it was. She was definitely Nyu, and that was what had puzzled him. She had used to be such a clueless child, someone who had to taken care of, but now… she was exactly what Lucy had meant to be… except… childish.

With a gasp, he understood.

Lucy was supposed to be a vicious killer; it was something she had learnt to do. Unlike Nana, she had been left on her own when she was young, left to figure everything out on her own, and her murderous nature had grown with her, to become part of her to such an extent that she couldn’t be rid of it. But now, Lucy was trying to ignore the inclinations she had to start hurting people, trying to push them to the back of her mind but these urges had to be released somehow. It had been so long since Lucy had hurt someone, and Kouta supposed that it had all gotten too much. Whatever had sparked off this change must have either been too much for Lucy to handle, or had physically hurt her enough to take her consciousness away from her. And he had a shrewd idea which.

“NANA!” Kouta turned to the Diclonius who was now pressed up against the wall, panting. “WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO HER?!”

“I don’t know!” Nana cried, rolling her shoulders to somehow coax the pain from her. “I don’t know! We went out to the market… and she collapsed.”

“You took her out?!” Kouta again looked at the chanting Nyu, who had her hands pressed against her watering eyes, her voice growing louder with each word. She was sobbing and wailing, her mind being crushed by the continuous battle of both personalities, which were attacking each other for complete control over the body. At this moment, it seemed as if Lucy and Nyu were in a stalemate situation, and the body was left mumbling almost incoherently without any intelligent or evensane thought to guide it. “Why!?”

“She said she wanted to learn how to… not hurt people…” Nana explained. Her face was pasty and damp with sweat and she crawled over to where Yuka lay and turned her over, lifting her onto her lap. “I thought that… going for a walk might help…”

“Are you insane?!” Kouta took an involuntary step closer to Nyu, who had just ceased in her chanting and had fallen forwards onto the floor.

“I don’t wanna.” She said from her prone position after a silent moment, where even Nana and Kouta held their breath. “I don’t wanna… kill anymore.”

As she heard this, Nana let out her breath in an explosion of air. Nyu was gone again, leaving only a shattered and exhausted Lucy in a weakened shell of a body. If Lucy were back to her full strength, it wouldn’t have taken so much out of her, but now… if Nyu took over again, Lucy would have no chance.

Lucy used her arms to push herself from the ground a little way and looked up at Kouta. “I asked you… to kill me if I couldn’t…stop murdering people.” She said breathlessly. Her eyes filled with pain and she slipped down a little. “Kouta…”

“…I can’t…” Kouta’s eyes were wide and Lucy slumped again a little, her eyes becoming dull. “You know… I couldn’t.”

She gave a weak little smile. “Oh what am I going… to do with you Kouta?” She asked quietly before her head fell onto the floor with a hard thump.

Kouta slowly walked over to where Lucy now lay, and dropped to his knees. “I could never hurt you, Lucy.” He said quietly, not caring that Nana was not four feet from him. “Because I love you… and I always will…” He turned her over and pressed his lips to her cold forehead.

Nana was very thankful Yuka didn’t hear that.

Nana and Kouta both sat in the room for hours, looking down at their prospective patients until little Mayu walked in, wondering why everyone was in here when she had gotten back from school. Her little eyes widened and she began to order the only two conscious members of the household to take the girls to their rooms and look after them. “They’re going to get better quicker if they’re warm.” She said as Kouta tucked Lucy into her bed. “And comfier when they actually wake up!”

“You don’t even know what had happened Mayu.” Kouta said moodily, tearing his eyes from Lucy. “So how do you know what’s best for them?”

“So staying on a cold wood floor is going to help them?” Mayu countered. “No… it’s not. So just look after Lucy and I’ll make dinner. Okay?”

“Sure Mayu.” Kouta sighed, knowing that the girl was right. “… Call me when it’s done.”

And once again Kouta was stuck sitting beside Lucy’s sickbed. His throat was still sore.

Ok, time to yell at me :)
