A/N: All of this is based on facts I have unearthed from various sources, such as interviews with Nomura, cutscenes (from Final Mix as well), and even the Director's Secret Report from the special book released with the Final Mix + disks. I filled in the gaps with logical reasoning and my own theories and voila.
Written with the storyverse of Depths of Oblivion in mind, so perhaps this will even help explain what I don't say in that story.
What is the heart?
Ask different people and you will get different answers. It is an organ in our chest which is the center of the circulatory system, which keeps us alive. It is where our emotions spring from. It is where we store our dearest memories. Can the heart be all of these things?
What is it that the Heartless steal?
What is it that we lack?
Upon surgical examination it is clear that out heart— the vital organ— still beats in our chests, yet in everyday life it is obvious that we are missing something. Physically, we do not differ from ordinary humans, except for the scars we bear from the ordeal of losing our hearts.
I believe that what we have lost is the very core of our being, everything which made us who we were, hence our title of “non-existent ones.” The heart of our being, rather than the heart of our body.
Somehow, the Heartless are able to seek this core out and steal it, but how?
-Author Unknown... possibly Vexen or Xaldin, judging from the handwriting.
And perhaps, if you review with any questions, I may be able to locate the report with the answers... perhaps a member of Organisation XIII put pen to paper with the same questions in mind.
Or just review because you're nice people...
