Disclaimer: I don’t own Azumanga Daioh
Sakaki walked around her cat filled room, packing a suitcase. It was almost summer break but this year she wasn’t going to Chiyo-chan’s summer home with the rest of her friends, this year she would be going to America.
--
The Next day:
Kaorin ran after Ms. Sakaki in the hallway calling after her. She turned around, her dark hair swaying gently. “Hello Kaorin.” the tall girl said in her soft voice.
Kaorin took a deep breath and spoke quickly before she lost the courage she had gathered up to ask Ms. Sakaki what she came to ask her. “Um...I was wondering...wouldyouliketohavelunchwithmeontherooftoday...since...it’s such a nice day...?”
“Sure,” Sakaki said and nodded before walking away “See you at lunch Kaorin.”
--
Kaorin sat on the small bench of the roof, fidgeting. What is Ms. Sakaki didn’t come? What if she changed her mind and had lunch with someone else, like Chiyo, or Yomi, or worse...Kagura.
“Kaorin,” said a soft, deep voice, interrupting her from her thoughts. She looked up into the dark blue eyes of the girl she was waiting for. “Are you okay?” she asked, “You seemed upset.”
Kaorin stood quickly and bowed. “I’m so sorry, I didn’t hear you some up her. I got distracted in my own thoughts.”
“It’s no problem.” Sakaki said waving her hand.
“Yes it is!” Kaorin argued. “I asked you up here, I should have been more alert, oh...I’m just wasting your time, I’m so stupid.”
“I don’t think you’re stupid Kaorin.”
Kaorin looked up at the taller girl. “You don’t?” she asked shocked.
“Of course not. I think you’re very bright.” Kaorin could have died right then and there. But she decided not to embarrass herself.
“So,” Kaorin said softly “are you excited about going to Chiyo-Chan’s summer home this year? I know I am.”
“Oh, I’m not going this year.”
Kaorins eyes widened. “Not going?” she had this year all planned out. She planned to tell Ms. Sakaki how she really felt. “But why not?”
“I’m going to America.”
“But why?!” Kaorins eyes started to water.
“My brother lives up there. He wants me to visit him. My parents didn’t want me to miss school to visit him so I’m going for my summer break.” Sakaki looked at Kaorin and saw her crying, so her hugged her.
Kaorin felt her heart skip a beat and reached up with shaking arms to hug the tall girl back. “M-Ms. Sakaki?” she said looking up. Sakaki looked backed down at her. Kaorin slowly stood on her toes. “I have something to tell you...I-I...”
“Yes Kaorin?”
“I... I think I might l-”
suddenly the door to the roof crashed open. “FOUND YOU!” Kagura yelled.
“Hi Ms. Sakaki.” Osaka and Chiyo said in unison.
Kaorin slowly and sadly pulled away from her beloved Ms. Sakaki and silently cursed her friends for being so caring.
“So what are you two doin’ up here all alone?” Osaka asked Kaorin and Sakaki.
“Well,” Kaorin said a bit irked. “We were up here having a conversation alone.” putting emphasis on the word alone.
“Well then Kaorin,” Osaka said with a big smile on her face. “Now that we’re here y’all don’t have to be alone.”
Kaorin felt like strangling the empty headed twit. “So are you ready for summer Ms. Sakaki?” Chiyo asked. “I hope you’re ready to go.”
“Oh,” Sakaki said. “I forgot to tell you I’m not going to your summer home this year, I’ll be going to America.”
“Aw man, that sucks.” Kagura cut in.
Chiyo nodded in agreement. “We’ll certainly miss you this year.” she said and hugged the older girl around the waist.
“I’ll miss you all too.” Sakaki said hugging the smaller girl back.
“Ms. Sakaki?” Kaorin asked. “May we speak before you leave?” Sakaki nodded. “Thank you I’ll call you later.” she said and walked back inside.
“What’s her deal?” Kagura asked with her hands on her hips.
“Maybe she doesn’t feel well.” Chiyo said.
“Yeah...” Sakaki said softly. “Maybe.” she really wished Kaorin would have stayed.
