Beach

James is asleep next to me, buried in sand from his shoulders down. He is unaware of this and many other things, some of which are quite important.

I, on the other hand, am perfectly aware of what James is most oblivious to. The fact that two of his best friends share a flat but are still to admit just how much they like each other and in what way.

Sirius chases Remus as they run through the edge of the sea, where we have come for the day. They are blissfully unaware of me watching them as they laugh loudly and blush when the other touches them on a naked piece of their skin.

Remus turns around as Sirius catches him around the torso. Sirius stands with both arms around Remus and I can tell their breathing has slowed yet become heavier. They look into each other’s eyes and I want to shout ‘Kiss him!’ but I know I mustn’t.

Sirius releases Remus and carefully avoids his eyes. He looks over at James and I for a moment and I drop my gaze, worried he’s seen me but when I look back up he isn’t looking anymore. I haven’t been caught out, thank goodness.

Then Remus does the courageous thing and makes the first move. He leans forward and kisses Sirius timidly and quickly on the cheek. He steps back, gasping, obviously realising what he’s just done. He turns to run but Sirius places a hand firmly yet gently on Remus’ cheek.

‘Here it comes!’ I think and sure enough it does. Sirius brings Remus closer and kisses him so softly it makes me sigh audibly. The kiss deepens and Sirius wraps an arm back around Remus’ waist again. I watch as my fiancée’s best friends fall in love with each other.

“Finally.” Says a voice from beside me. Evidently James wasn’t totally unaware.
