All APD characters such as Alaer, etc are copyright of me, JEF 2007.

Author Note: If you like fairies, magic, and that good old classic good vs evil, then you most likely will like this story of mine. :) This story's about a dream I really had which I call a 'story dream' about my original character Alaer where a young girl, her mother, and her aunt discover a place where Alaer is kept prisoner by gnomes, because he is a mischievous playful fairy up to more bad than good. Please check out my site at www. alaer art. com (take out the spaces!) for spiffy artwork of my ficcys (especially this one)! Enjoy!

A Playful Dream

A girl named Ann Silvermen loved to ride the ferry and her mother, Jane, took her to ride one on a sunny morning. Ann's aunt Sara went with them. They boarded the ferry like they had many times before, but this time when they crossed the water the boat didn't take them to the other side of the river. The boat stopped at the edge of a dock Ann had never seen before. The sky was orange and hazy, like the sun was setting already.

She saw many many short weird-looking people. All of them were not that handsome or pretty. They looked ancient, many of them had wrinkles and warts. They were friendly though and allowed her, her mom, and her aunt to tour their isle town. There was a carnival type of festival going on and the family had fun enjoying themselves there.

Meanwhile, the chief gnome instructed the gnome guards to make sure their prisoner, Alaer the mischievous fairy, did not escape his isolation cell and see the humans. Alaer was only allowed outside his cell to make the flowers grow in their town and keep all things in nature alive. Then he would be returned to his prison. Alaer longed to escape the gnomes and fly away from that town forever. He could sense the humans and knew they would be his ticket out of this miserable jail.

His own people had trapped him there since he was too unpredictable and unruly for them. He did as he pleased and was quite naughty at times, causing too much destruction while he 'played'. His fairy people put him with the gnomes to keep some kind of control on him. But Alaer had plans of escape and with humans here, he could finally get away for real!

Once the careless guards left his cell after checking on him, Alaer used his magic to bend the bars in his window to get out. He never bothered before since it would be a waste of time flying about this isle with no real road to escape. Humans meant a road to Alaer as they would eventually be sent back to the Reality World by the gnomes. It was against Magic Law to leave trapped humans on Gnome Island.

It was rare that any humans happened to stumble upon this magical place. This was the first time actually and great fortune for Alaer. He was really really tired of being a slave for the gnomes by nurturing nature on their small island and being locked away like a tool in a shed. He was a living creature and he wanted out. He wanted to fly and do as he pleased whenever he wanted, but now he couldn't. That was going to change though.

Alaer would befriend the humans and escape into the Reality World and get away from his nature nurturing slave chores. If the humans liked him and invited him to go to the Reality World with them, then the gnomes could do nothing to stop him from escaping forever. He did not want to use his magic only to heal or to nourish.

He wanted to play by causing earthquakes and tornadoes and other (what humans called) natural disasters. He wanted his people (the Death Fairies) to recognize his awesome power and see that he was no pansy fairy. He didn't want his powers to go to waste by only doing weaker magic like he was doing now for those stupid lazy gnomes.

He was no ordinary fairy either. His mother was a human and he always hoped to get to the Reality World to find her. He couldn't wait to make friends with the humans at the carnival.

Happily, he flew free from his prison and flew to the edge of the isle. Testing his powers, he blasted his magic to the shore below, causing the waves to slam into the sandy beach. He was getting much better at controlling it now. Hardly any of the flowers nearby got soaked or covered in sand like usual.

To keep his nurturing magic up to par, he grew some grass and pretty flowers in an balding field several fairy wing-flutters away. He found the humans playing some gnome carnival games. As Ann wandered into a wooded area, Alaer appeared in front of her and presented her with a deep red rose in full bloom that had a long stem.

She was surprised to see him since he was not like the many gnomes she saw on the isle. He was tall, handsome, and had translucent sparkly pearly wings coming out of his back. Enchanted by his beauty, she knew immediately what he was. A real live fairy! Ann loved things of fantasy, but never knew they were real. Seeing the gnomes and now this fairy, she was very happy to be in this place. It was all so friendly and nice.

But Ann couldn't figure out why this fairy was so big. She thought all fairies were butterfly-sized or smaller. This one was bigger than she was. She took the lovely rose he held out to her and smelled it heavenly scent.

"Hello, my name is Alaer. What is your name?" Alaer asked, bending down to be eye level with her.

"My name is Ann." she replied, shyly. She couldn't wait to show him to her mother and aunt. "Are you a real fairy?" she asked, wanting to be sure. Afterall, he was pretty big to be a fairy. He had long reddish-brown hair and seven gold earrings in his left ear. His garnet-red cat-like eyes fascinated Ann. He was really interesting to look at!

Alaer swept his open hand over a grassy patch near him and as his hand passed over, an array of many different beautiful flowers appeared out of nowhere! He laughed at her question. "Of course I'm a fairy. Don't you see my wings?" He turned around and fluttered them, blowing Ann's strawberry blonde bangs back away from her face.

"I make the life on this isle thrive and grow strong." Alaer said, touching a tree sapling and causing it to grow quickly into a teenaged tree almost instantly. He then touched a nearby fruitless apple tree and heavy apples appeared quickly. Alaer flew up into the branches and got an apple down for the girl. Ann was very impressed by what she had seen. This fairy was amazing!

"Come with me! I want to show you to my Mom and Aunt Sara." Ann said eagerly, running back to her family. Alaer followed by flying after her with a big naughty grin on his face. This was it! He would be able to escape soon! Jane and Sara were throwing rings at a stick in the ground several feet away from them when Ann found them.

"Mom! Aunt Sara! Look at the new friend I found! He can make things grow and he gave me this rose and apple! He's really amazing!" Ann gushed, out of breath from running so fast. Jane and Sara were shocked to see a young man flying over to them.

"Hello, I am Alaer." he said, taking their hands and kissing the tops of them. The two sisters were shocked to see such a large fairy. They used to believe in fantasy creatures when they were children, but as adults, they did not believe these creatures to be real anymore. After coming to the Gnome Island, they believed once more. Sara had plans for the creatures here though. Her younger sister Jane was a very decent person, but Sara was a different story. She always had a desire to make a buck or more on every opportunity she could find or come across.

And finding a bunch of male and female gnomes with a large fairy meant big money in the Reality World. If only she could get some of them, especially that fairy to go home with her. Sara was a movie producer and was best friends with a popular talk-show host. She could make a lot of money with real live fantasy creatures. She wondered if there was a unicorn hiding somewhere around there that she could take back with her too. She would ask the fairy and find out before they would go back home. IF they could get back home.

"Hello, my name is Jane. Pleased to meet you." Ann's mother said, smiling kindly.

"Hello, I'm Sara. Say, do you know the way back to our home? I mean, we're not stuck here are we?" Sara asked, hoping they were not stuck there, because if they were, how would she be able to make money on this fairy and all his magical friends?

"Not to worry. There is a way back to your world. Just let me know when you want to go home and I will help you." Alaer said, always a smile on his pretty face.

Sara breathed a sigh of relief. "Whew, I'm glad. Well, Ann, where do we go next?" she asked her niece. Ann went to Alaer and grabbed his hand happily. Alaer bent down to her and tickled her sides playfully. Ann screamed with joyous giggles. Jane only noticed then that his nails seemed more like claws and grew a bit concerned.

Were fairies dangerous at all? She never remembered reading anything bad about them, like attacking children. They were nice and gentle creatures that lived in flowers, right? If that was so, why was this one so big like a person? And why did he have claws?

She pushed her worries aside for now. The fairy was very nice to her daughter and his friendly demeanor eased her fears somewhat. She would still keep a watchful eye on him though just the same.

"This is a lovely place you have here." Jane said, going over to Alaer and still giggling Ann. Alaer stood up and seemed suddenly forlorn. "It's only that way, because I make it so. The gnomes here use me as a slave to maintain the island's beauty. Once they are done using me for the day, they put me back into my cage. I'm not allowed to leave this place and so, I'll never be free."

Jane was shocked to hear this. "How awful!" Ann got angry. "Those gnomes are bad! I don't like them!" Sara had a solution. "Why don't you just come home with us? Actually, I want you to come. You'll definitely be free to fly around our city no problem."

Alaer hid a sly grin. "That'd be wonderful. I humbly accept your offer." Ann happily jumped for joy. "Oh, goodie, goodie! My very own fairy to play with! Thank you, Mom and Aunt Sara!" she cried, hugging her mother. Sara allowed her sister and niece to walk ahead of them when she quickly asked if there were any unicorns about.

Alaer shook his head. "No, not in this part of the Fantasy. I'm not sure where to find one. They are fairly dangerous. You wouldn't want to find them anyway. They like to charge and impale people against trees." Sara changed her mind about bringing back a unicorn. She didn't need a horned horse going rabid and attacking innocent paying customers. She didn't need the lawsuits. The day went on, which was a sunset at first then afternoon sunlight appeared later. After a few more gnome games, the humans asked to be sent home.

The gnomes by law of their people were forced to send the humans back even if it meant Alaer could escape with them. A boat appeared to take them back and Alaer got onto it with a smug expression. The gnomes were not happy about this, but there was nothing they could do since the humans invited him. The chief gnome now had to begrudgingly tell the King of all Death Fairies that his son, Alaer, had escaped to the Reality World...

Ann held onto Alaer's hand as they were sent back on the boat. A thick fog appeared and swallowed them all. Moments passed and the fog lifted. Ann saw the other side of the river and realized they were on the ferry again, like nothing had happened. It seemed like only two hours had gone by when they went to the gnomes' place. She almost thought she had day-dreamed it all, but she knew it was all real when Alaer was still beside her. She happily pointed to the dock.

"All the neat stores that my Mom and Aunt Sara like to shop at are there." she said, pulling at his hand. She then saw that his wings and pointy ears were missing. "Where'd your wings and pointy ears go?" she cried, reaching upwards to his back. Alaer patted her head. "I'm hiding them now. I think it's safer for me to do that. My wings are very delicate and I have to take good care of them. And my ears need to look like yours now that I'm here in Reality."

Ann nodded, understanding. "Oh, ok, that's really cool!"

Sara then said, "I think we'll have to buy you new clothes. Fairy attire might get you attacked in the city, especially at night. I don't want my star getting roughed up before I have a chance to show you off." she said, hinting her true reason for bringing him to the Reality World. Alaer was confused. "Star?" he asked, thinking of the ones in the night sky.

"Yes, I was planning of introducing you to my best friend Jen Holmeyer. She's a very popular talk-show host on television." Sara said, getting dollar signs in her eyes.

"When you show everyone you're a real live fairy and your magic, you'll be an instant star. A celebrity overnight with fame and fortune, just like that!" She snapped her fingers as she said that. Alaer wasn't sure about this. He wanted to show off his destructive powers, but this Sara woman wanted him to only do his weaker magic to entertain her people. This was not his idea of freedom and fun.

He only wanted his fairy people to know that he was capable of powerful strong magic. He didn't want the humans to know of his stronger powers, they might try to find ways to stop him somehow. If any of the humans knew the art of capturing fairies and then they could make him their slave, just like how the gnomes did. Because of that, he did not want the humans know who he was either. It was safer for him that way.

"I don't know if I want to be a...'star' and a celebrity... I don't want anyone to know who I am." he said unhappily. Sara waved her hands. "Hey, hey! It's alright, it's ok! That's no problem, we'll hide your identity. Cover up your face or something, don't worry. You can wear a mask or a disguise! No one has to know who you really are. All they have to know about is how helpful and beneficial your magical services can be. Hmm, can you heal the sick and wounded?"

"Of course. Anything living I can heal. I do it all the time where those gnomes live." Alaer backed up when Sara stepped forward, opening her arms wide and showing great enthusiasm suddenly.

"I just wanted to know because you will really help this planet a lot I think! When people see you healing the sick and make flowers grow out of nothing, they'll throw money at us for you to help them!"

Jane was very embarrassed by her sister's money-hungry pushy attitude. "Please forgive my sister. She gets very excited whenever she thinks she can make a lot of money fast."

"Yeah, you should see Aunt Sara play the stock market. She almost foams at the mouth there." Ann spoke up then with a giggle. Sara was too enthralled by the thought of never-ending supply of money pouring in forever to reprimand her niece.

Alaer was not very interested after hearing all that work Sara had planned for him. If he had to heal and grow things all the time, he'd have no time to fly or play aka destroy things. Most of all, he'd never have any time to search for his mother. He felt like he was in gnome prison island all over again.

Still, the humans here had no power over him just the same, a long as none of them knew the art of capturing fairies. He could just fly away and disappear. But then, there was that Ann girl. She was the main reason he was able to escape in the first place. Only a human child's strong dream and belief in fairies brought her to Gnome Island in the first place and if she never came, he would still be imprisoned there. For Ann's sake, he wouldn't fly away... Not yet anyway.

They went shopping at the special fancy stores Jane and Sara liked to shop at. They bought Alaer a new outfit that was ordinary average guy wear. He picked it out himself and when the humans said it looked natural on him, he wore it right then and there. A white tank top and a pair of blue jeans. He kept on his maroon-colored long finger-less gloves though.

They took the ferry back to the other side of the river to get back home. The family lived close, so they would walk home no problem. As they crossed a busy intersection, Alaer got lost in the crowds of people crossing the street to each side. He eventually found his way away from the people and was in front of a currently empty office business building. A sign said something about renovations and it would be opened in a few weeks with a new look.

Feeling playful, Alaer opened his hand and sent a short powerful blast of magical energy into the sidewalk in front of the building. In a few seconds, the ground began to shake and the building's glass windows and doors cracked into millions of spider web-like lines. The several passing by people near him shrieked and ran away, seeking safety. The earthquake stopped after a moment, pleasing the naughty fairy. He never got to practice like this on Gnome Island, this was great!

Since he memorized Ann's energy signature, he was able to find her and her family quickly soon after he ruined the office building. When Ann saw him, she was relieved. Sara was relieved too, but for a different reason. She was beginning to see Alaer as her big fat cash cow and she couldn't wait to milk him for all that he was worth.

"Did you feel that? It was an earthquake! Where did you go?" Ann asked, hugging his leg. He patted her head. "Sorry, I got lost when all those humans were crossing the road like that. Yes, I did feel that earthquake. Wasn't it powerful?" he asked, wondering what they thought of it.

Jane nervously laughed. "Yes, it was very strong. Thankfully it wasn't too long though." Sara nodded. "Definitely. We don't need our house fallen down now when we have a guest with us."

Ann tugged on Alaer's jeans to get his attention. "Wait to you see my big brother, Thomas. He likes it if people call him Tom though. He goes to High School and he'll be graduating soon. You can come when he does. It'll be fun! Say, we can play all day and all night! Tommy never plays with me much, so now you can, Alaer." she said happily.

Jane gave her a look. "Ann, remember your brother Thomas has a lot of homework. That is why he is too busy to play with you. You know he would if he had the time. And don't forget your own homework too. Even though you two have a week's worth of vacation from school does not mean you can slack off on your homework."

"Aw, Mom, you don't have to remind me. School homework is no fun to think about." Ann said, making a face. Sara brushed all that aside. "Sorry, Ann, but Alaer here isn't going to have time to play all the time like you want him to. He's going to be a big star and make your Auntie Sara a big-time heroine and a legend. I will single-handedly save the world of its troubles with one fairy. I mean, how more heroic and legendary can you get?"

Alaer furrowed his brow, but said nothing. He would simply fly away and hide if this Sara woman tried to use him like how the gnomes did. She had no power over him, so he could escape from her no problem.

Sara checked her Rolex watch then. "Oh no, I'll be late for a meeting! I'll see you later, Alaer. Stay at my sister's house, they'll take real good care of you. I'll come back tomorrow to pick you up and take you to meet my friend, Jen. Bye!"

"Bye bye, Aunt Sara!" Ann cried, growing attached to Alaer's leg like a mushroom on a tree. Alaer was glad to see pushy greedy Sara rush away. He needed a place to rest so he could fly during the sunset and find a place to practice his destructive powers in secret. Then he could prove himself worthy to his father and all the Death Fairies. Jane shook her head at her sister.

"She is very overbearing at times." she said, wishing she could take some aspirin for the headache she had. She got them more when her sister was around hyping about a new business venture.

Alaer was taken to their penthouse not far away. Jane took some headache medicine and went to bed to rest. Ann explained that this was their summer home and they had a special cabin for when they wanted to go skiing in the winter, plus another larger house in another location just for the winter.

Also there was another home that they had in the country with horses and everything for hiking and trail rides. Alaer didn't know why they needed so many houses, but that was their business.

As long as he could practice his stronger destructive magic, he was happy. Once he was really strong enough, he could find his mother and show her how great he had become.

This was very important to him. He was taken away by his father from his mother to train to be a Death Fairy, but his powers were too strong to control and if he learned how to master his great powers, Alaer could easily take over his father and his kingdom. The King of the Death Fairies was not going to allow a half-fairy, even his own flesh and blood, to overthrow him ever. So Alaer was forced to do weaker magic at Gnome Island to punish him and to keep him under wraps and make sure he remained clueless of his true powers.

He hoped his mother was somewhere near this place as he didn't want to leave Ann behind. Even if he flew away and went into hiding from that Sara woman, he would come back to Ann. She was his salvation and she was the only reason he was able to get away from those stupid ugly lazy belittling gnomes.

Alaer let Ann drag him from room to room, showing him everything. The butler and maid were introduced to him. They were a quiet and boring bunch.

Ann loved board games, so she got Alaer to play the many ones she had for hours on end on the kitchen table. Alaer did not mind and enjoyed the little girl's company. She was very lively, happy, and pleasant. Eventually, Tom came home from a friend's house and walked into the kitchen.

"Hey, Tom! Lookie at the new friend Mom and Aunt Sara and I found while we went on the ferry!" Ann said, excitedly. Tom gave Alaer one look and wasn't too crazy about him. He had better muscles than Tom had and he looked to be a 'ladies man' even.

"His name is Alaer..." Ann said, trying to get some attention from her brother in the form of a conversation. He hardly even talked to her anymore. Tom had a lot on his mind lately.

Besides studying for tons of exams and homework, his girlfriend Kim dumped him recently. She said he just wasn't what she was looking for in a guy. He was sure it had to do with his physique as it couldn't be his intelligence.

He was a super science whiz, but his body wasn't up to par with his brain. No matter how much he worked out, he could never get that muscle tone girls liked.

The last thing Tom wanted to see was a guy who had muscles and a body he wanted badly. "Aunt Sara wants to make him a star. Isn't that neat?" Ann said, wanting her brother to reply some way or another. Tom felt even more resentful and jealous of this new guy.

He had begged his Aunt Sara to put him in one of her new movies as a scientist or at least, appear on one of Jen's shows to show off his vast intelligence and inventions for years, but he was ignored and not taken seriously. Aunt Sara had the nerve to tell him that people watching TV could care less about 'nerd' and 'geek' crap!

And now, all of sudden this new guy shows up and poof! He's got a job and guest appearances on Jen's show, just like that. What was so great about him anyway? He didn't look that smart... Tom made up his mind about Alaer right then and there. He didn't like him at all.

He stared down the fairy, showing his bitterness clearly. Alaer noticed the young man's mean stare and glared back. Ann broke the standoff and silence by shaking a box of puzzle pieces. "Alaer, do you like puzzles? Let's play some more!"

"What are puzzles?" he asked. Tom had to scoff contemptuously. He was right! This pretty boy was nothing more than a stupid oaf!

"I'll show you! Come sit down." Ann ripped open the new package and dumped the pieces out.

Tom was kinda glad for the interruption anyway since he wanted to get away from this guy as soon as he could. Why did Aunt Sara's new employee have to stay here anyway?? He went off to ask his mother more about this outrage.

After about a half an hour, the butler came to the kitchen. "A Miss Kim is here to see you, Miss Ann." he said. "Tell her to come in. I'm playing with my new friend here." Ann said. The butler nodded his head. "Yes, Miss Ann."

A few moments later, a pretty lady appeared in the kitchen doorway. "Hi, Kim!" Ann cried, jumping down from her chair and to the lady. "Hello, Ann. I found your brother's jacket and some of his other things in my room, so I'm returning them. We're no longer seeing each other anymore" she said, giving the property to Ann. She looked a little sad, feeling bad for her moody older brother.

"Oh, ok..." Ann said, then perked right back up. "Meet my new friend, Kim! My mom and Aunt Sara found him on the ferry. He's really nice-..." Ann stopped when she realized that Alaer had disappeared! She felt deserted instantly. Why did he go away? Would he come back? What happened?

Kim looked to the empty chair that Ann was pointing at and thought that Ann had an imaginary friend. "I'm sure he's really nice, Ann. But I've got to go now. Bye." she said, not wanting to see Tom there. Ann was in a deep daze now, worrying about her fairy friend and where he had gone. "Yeah... Bye..." she said, absentmindedly.

Kim left quickly and nearly ran into someone outside the front door. "Oh, I'm sorry! I didn't..see..you..there..." Kim said, looking up at Alaer, whom she had accidentally ran into. She was in utter amazement and awe at his beautiful looks and perfect physique that she was so dumbfounded that she couldn't barely finish her sentence. There was something...magical about him.

Alaer shook his head. "No, it's alright. I shouldn't be wandered out here. Goodbye." Really he had tried to hide since he didn't want strangers to see him just like that. He started to leave when Kim stopped him. No way was she going to let this cutie get away! He was exactly what she was looking for in a man.

"No, wait! Who are you? I've lived in this city all my life and I've never seen you around before." Kim said, curious to know more about this new guy. Alaer looked away from her and tried to leave again.

"I've just arrived here. I'm sorry, but I can't stay." Alaer began to jog off down the front lawn towards a row of manicured trees. He did not want to socialize with any more humans than he had to, especially when they could see his face.

He was planning to test his destructive skills incognito and become a Fairy of Sin, the highest and most respected rank for Death Fairies. Even in the Reality World, his father would be able to sense his great powers from afar without difficulty. Once he knew how powerful Alaer was, he would come for him and accept him at last. He would offer his rank as king as a reward too. Alaer was striving for that goal, to make his father proud.

Then he wouldn't be exiled from Death Division anymore and finally see his friends again. He would find his mother too as well. It all was a good plan, but there were too many pushy humans around. He had to shake off this girl now. He quicken his pace.

Kim hurried to go after him, but as soon as she blinked, he was gone. Poof! Just like that, gone. She couldn't make sense to where he had disappeared to since Tom's front yard had only wide open spaces and the trees were not really that thick or close together. There were no nearby buildings, houses, or corners for him to zip behind. Bewildered, she shrugged it off and went back home.

Little did she know that Tom was watching from inside the house upstairs. He grew insanely jealous ten-fold seeing her talk with Alaer and vowed to get even. First he muscles in on his territory, then he challenges his alpha-male position, and now stealing his girlfriend! He would make that Alaer guy sorry he ever showed his face around here. Ever since his dad died in a car accident six years ago, Tom assumed his role as man of the house. Now this happens!

Tom decided that he would do whatever he needed to do, even take steroids, to beef his muscles up and beat the tar out of Al. Then, his aunt would recognize his greatness and Kim would come crawling back to him. And if she didn't, well, he would simply make her go back to him, that was all...
