1: Do the Impossible

“So, where were we?” The Doctor asked, starting up the TARDIS. Jack and Martha exchanged glances and Jack shrugged.

“Parallel Universes?” Martha asked.

“Not possible,” The Doctor said shortly. “You have any ideas, Jack?”

“Nah,” Jack said, sitting down and putting his feet up. “You pick.” The Doctor nodded and started flipping switches and pushing buttons. Jack closed his eyes, an odd smile on his face, as Martha intently watched The Doctor work. Suddenly, The TARDIS shook violently, throwing Martha back and causing Jack to slide from his perch. The Doctor held tightly to the controls, a look of fierce determination on his face.

“Is that all?” Jayne asked incredulously as his gaze fell on the three boxes Zoë and Mal had brought with them. Mal and Zoë exchanged glances before Mal just shrugged and pulled open one of the many hideaways in Serenity’s cargo bay. Zoë walked swiftly across the room to the Comm. System and simultaneously hit the button to close up the ship and the one to speak to the bridge.

“Wash, get us out of here,” she said before returning to help Mal and Jayne store the cargo.

“Still can’t believe we went through all that trouble to get three lousy boxes,” Jayne grumbled.

“If you’re gonna complain about your meal ticket, I just won’t pay you,” Mal said, shoving the last of the crates into the storage area and replacing the panel that hid it. Jayne shot him a glare, but he stopped grumbling.

Mal began to lead the way to the Cockpit, but he stopped. He cocked his head to the side, and then twisted around to look behind him.

“What’re you lookin’ for?” Jayne asked, pushing his way around Mal to reach the door; but he stopped, too. A soft, scraping hum filled the room, and then faded away, and then came again. It kept cycling through, fading and growing. Mal and Zoë exchanged worried glances while Jayne scanned the room, searching for the sound’s source.

“What is that?” Zoë inquired. Mal sighed and made his way to the Comm. Panel.

“Kaylee,” he called out as he hit the button. “What’s wrong with my ship?”

“Nothing,” came the mechanics cheery response. “Everything’s shiny, Cap’n. For once. Why?”

“Never mind,” Mal said. He turned off the panel and sighed, putting his head in his hand. The hum came again, louder, and he turned around in time to see a blue box materialize before him. “Jayne?” he asked. “Where’s Vera?”

.-.-.-.

“Where are we?” Martha asked, but she didn’t get an answer. Jack was picking himself up from the floor and The Doctor was busy examining The TARDIS’ controls. Jack, having successfully stood up, moved quickly to the door and, winking at Martha, pulled it open. He came face to face with a burly man holding a rather large gun.

“Um…,” Jack said, raising his hands. “Doctor?”

“Can we go back to New Jersey?” Martha asked, taking a slow step backwards. The Doctor looked up, and his attention was drawn away from the controls.

.-.-.-.

“Can I shoot ’em?” Jayne asked as he, Mal, and Zoë took in the strange scene. The box was larger on the inside, and there were three people in it. One woman and two men. The stockier of the two men had opened the door and now he was raising his hands slowly over his head. The other man, the skinny one, was bent over what looked to be the box’s control panel, but his attention was on the open door.

“Not yet,” Mal said. Jayne sighed, but he didn’t lower his weapon. An odd smile grew on the face of the man standing before him. He slipped a long, thin object from his sleeve and pointed it at Jayne. Jayne raised an eyebrow and let an amused laugh escape his lips, but the other man’s face remained stern,

“Drop it,” he said, and the thing started humming. Jayne glanced at Mal, who had drawn his own weapon; and then at Zoë, who had made her way to the Comm. System. When his gaze finally fell back on the man, he found that three of the screws holding Vera together were now in the man’s hand and bits of the gun went clattering to the floor.

“Why you,” Jayne set Vera aside as quickly as he could before leaping at the man, who had tossed his long thin object back to the taller man. As they tumbled backwards, Mal and Zoë exchanged an annoyed look before Mal stepped into the box, leaving Zoë standing at the door with her gun drawn.

“Who are you and why are you on my ship?” Mal asked, pointing his gun at the man and eyeing the thin object in his hand.

“I’m The Doctor, and this is Martha, and that is Jack,” the man said, pointing at himself, then at the young woman next to him, and then down at the floor where Jack and Jayne were brawling. Mal glanced down and smirked when he saw the determination in Jayne’s eyes being mocked by the amusement in Jack’s.

“What are you doing on my ship?” Mal queried again, quickly returning his attention to The Doctor. Zoë had returned from the Comm. and was now standing behind Mal with her gun ready. Martha took a few steps back, putting the boxes controls between her and the weapons.

“Well, um, we didn’t mean to get here,” The Doctor said, looking down at the controls. He flicked a few switches before looking up at Mal again. “It seems we hit some sort of time shift and missed our destination. By how much I can’t be sure, but, well, a lot.”

“That was eloquent,” Zoë said, she looked at Mal. “Wash is bringing us down on the nearest planet.”

“Which is?” Mal asked.

“Persephone.”

“That’s what I was afraid of. Jayne!” Mal shouted. Jayne glanced up from the brawl, opening himself up to Jack’s swinging fist.

“Jack,” The Doctor said. “Do I have to say it again?” Jack sighed and disentangled himself from Jayne. The two men stood up, brushing dust off while Jayne glared at Jack and Jack gave him a triumphant smile.

“For the record,” Jack said as he walked past The Doctor. “I wasn’t flirting.”

“Right,” The Doctor said before returning his attention to Mal and Zoë. “Well, I don’t think we know your names.”

“Captain Malcolm Reynolds,” Mal said. “This is my first officer Zoë, and that’s Jayne.”

“Captain Reynolds, may we take advantage of your hospitality until we figure out where exactly we are?” The Doctor asked.

“No. You can take advantage of it ’til we get to Persephone, where we’re going to take leave of you as quickly as possible. Jayne, escort our guests to their rooms.” Jayne smiled a menacing smile as he led the three out of the TARDIS and through the ships cargo bay down towards the guest quarters. As they walked past the infirmary, he heard River’s mumbling stop and the screaming start.

“ALIENS!” she screamed. “They’re here, coming, SIMON!” And Jayne heard her brother comforting her and he let out a soft chuckle at the torment he was going to put the Doc through at dinner.

“Aliens don’t exist, River, you’re okay,” and the screaming stopped. It was followed, however, by a soft whisper of “they’re here,” and Jayne glanced back just in time to see Martha, The Doctor, and Jack exchange worried glances.
