Brass in Pocket’ lyrics and Song by The Pretenders

Jack Harkness stood still, frozen in time, unwillingly to escape its clutches. His eyes flicked wildly out of control at the mysterious man in front of him, he felt, he knew. The man came closer to him. His scarf ends flying at the end of his feet, his curly brown hair flinging and clashing against each other. The wind was at a medium speed on top of the hill; at least it wasn’t raining thank God. Ireland didn’t seem so bad, apart from its wet days. The landscapes and the colours of the grass and sky were wonderful.

The Captain became speechless, lost and confused. He wanted to believe that the middle aged looking man in front of him was really the Doctor, he also wanted to believe that he wasn’t, the stranger isn’t the Doctor he knew. It was his eyes. Those bright glowing blue, brilliant eyes were telling him an old story. The Doctor smiled, all his teeth were showing, it made Jack smile back.

“Doctor,” Jack said simply, hands on each side of his waist. “Please tell me it’s you?”

“Well, the last time I checked, I was.” He grinned and then pulling out a white crumbled paper bag from his pocket. “Jelly baby?”

“Thank you.” Jack accepted his offer and pulled out a yellow. He popped the soft sweet into his mouth and chewed on it slowly, tasting the delicious texture of jelly and powder. “Lemon, my favourite.”

“Really, I always thought the green and red were the popular ones. Oh well, more for me.” The Doctor stuffed the bag back into his pocket. “What’s your name?”

“Captain Jack Harkness. How long did you have that body, anyway?” Jack said curiously. He hoped the Doctor hadn’t gone a regenerated again.

“Oh this,” The Doctor examined himself. “It’s just a new model, regenerated not too long ago, as I can remember.”

Jack sighed. The Doctor raised his eyebrows at the Captain; he held his hands up in front of his chest. “I don’t mean this is a new new model, Jack. This is an old one, it’s my fourth incarnation. You’re from my future, correct?”

“Oh, thank goodness.” Jack was relieved, he had to smile again. “And yes, I’m from the future, the 50th century, and the past.”

“The past?”

“It’s kind of a long story, Doctor.”

“Do you work for anyone, or do you work alone?” The Doctor sat down on the ground, his legs crossed and hands on each side of him.

“Why, are you interested?” Jack raised his eyebrow and sat down beside him.

“Well, yes, I am.” The Doctor grinned stupidly. Jack chuckled and ruffled his spiky hair.

He began to tell the Doctor about his stories, weather they were happy or sad or just plain weird. Jack never knew anyone who would listen to his stories with such excitement or tension, so he kept on feeding the Doctor more. He even mentioned about Torchwood at one point, he then thought to himself that it was a seriously bad idea to tell him that. He didn’t tell him stories though about him, his future incarnation or the people he was travelling with.

Torchwood? I could have sworn I heard that name before, could have been hearsay.” The Doctor thought about that name for a while and then pulling out another sweet from his pocket, he offered Jack another. “You must never listen to rumours, Jack. They’ll only lead you into serious trouble, believe me, I know.”

“Always listen to the wise word of the Doctor, he’ll guide you through.” Jack announced, the Doctor laughed. “Who are you, or are you, travelling with now?”

“Actually, I’m travelling with two people. A young woman named Sarah Jane and the other is an imbecile named Harry.” The Doctor said while pulling out a small bottle of whiskey. “Want some.”

“No thanks.” Jack waved his hand. “So, this Harry guy, is he hot?”

“What sort of a question is that?” The Doctor sounded insulted.

“Technically, it’s not a question, I’m just curious to know.”

“Well…umm…umm…” The Doctor was stumped during his sentence. For the first time, someone caught him out. He had to admit himself; he did feel a small attraction to the sailor, that was all. There was nothing major going on between them, and he doubt Harry wouldn’t have approved. “Actually, I…”

“Were you in love with him?” Jack asked.

“I wasn’t in love with him, never was. I just… liked him, that’s all.” The Doctor took a gulp from the whiskey bottle.

“Did he like you back?”

“I don’t know, Jack. Why are you so interested in my sexual life?” The Doctor felt alienated by Jack’s inquiring. Jack didn’t mean to be nosy about the Doctor’s personal life; it’s just that he sounded so fascinating.

“Because I think you’re the most fascinating and beautiful man I’ve ever met.” Jack murmured.

The Doctor sat in silence. He didn’t know what to say or do. Jack had just given him juice to boost his ego. The Doctor slowly screwed the bottle of his whiskey and stuffed it back into his pocket. He wanted to cry with happiness, he wanted to give Jack a hug… he wanted to kiss him.

“Jack, I… I don’t know what to say.” The Doctor said, tears chocking in his throat. “That’s the kindest thing anyone has ever said to me in a hell of a long time, especially if it came from human’s mouth.” He grinned and then bit the bottom of his lip.

“You know, my Doctor once promised me he’ll give me a dance.” Jack was sad again, he looked away from the Doctor. “I never did get that dance, or the same affection he gave her. All I wanted was to dance with him, have his body held close against mine.” A single tear ran down his cheek. “It was all I wanted, just one dance, with the perfect person.”

I hate it when I feel guiltiness. The Doctor spoke to himself angrily. But he had to feel sorry for the Captain. The man only requested one dance. The Doctor licked his lips and looked at Jack.

“This is the reason why you’re here, it’s because you couldn’t get that dance from my future self and thought of getting one from the past.” The Doctor explained. “Jack, I may not be the Doctor you know, but I’m still him, up here.” He tapped the side of his head. “When I pass away, my memories will remain intact.”

“He abandoned me.” Jack spluttered angrily, tears staining his cheeks. “He left me.”

“I’m… sorry to hear that, Jack.” The Doctor said sympathetically and patted his back. “I would never do that, I could never abandon somebody.”

The Doctor got up from the ground and dusted the dirt away from his tweed trousers. He pulled a hand out to Jack for him to accept. “I… would like to dance with you, Jack.” The fingers wiggled his fingers and smiled. “It’s the least I could do before you go.”

“What.” Jack was lost.

“Captain Jack Harkness, would you like to dance with me.”

Jack looked up at him like a child and took his hand into his own. The Doctor mopped away Jack’s tears with his scarf. When the Doctor had said those painful words to Jack ‘…before you go…’ Jack held back his tears again. He couldn’t weep in front of the Time-Lord anymore.

The Doctor stood in front of Jack, arms and hands carefully cocooning and holding him into a sweet embrace. Jack needed this attention right now and was great happy to allow the Doctor to do what he wanted. Jack looked deep into the Doctor’s eyes, they were delightful and merry, and they made him feel warm again. Jack wrapped his arms and arms around the Doctor’s waist, holding him so close as if he were protecting him.

“This is wonderful.” Jack said with a smile.

“This is what you wanted, right?” The Doctor whispered.

“Ye… Yes, of course this is what I want. I want this, and I want you more.” Jack placed his head on the Doctor’s left shoulder.

“Maybe I should get the radio from the TARDIS, it’s better to dance with music.” The Doctor suggested.

“No… no… the sound of your hearts is music to me.” Jack closed his eyes and allowed the Doctor to lead the way.

The Doctor gently shifted a hand up along Jack’s back until his fingers were lost in a mass of spiky brown hair. He carefully stroked his hair and hummed. Jack didn’t want to leave the Doctor, not this one. He liked the Doctor before, the black leather jacket and trousers, he liked his northern accent. But he never got the satisfactory or the attention that he wanted. Of course the Doctor listened to him and cared about him as a friend, but it wasn’t what Jack just wanted.

He’d been alone long enough and he’ll be damned if he lets this one go. Not only he was a good looking with a hat and scarf, he made Jack feel special. He made him feel needed. Jack moved his head up to look at the Doctor, his eyes demanded something and Jack knew what it was. He smiled and moved his head closer, so close, he could the Doctor’s warm breath against his dry lips.

Both lips met blissfully.
