The first time Beast Boy changed into the Beast form, he was afraid. It hurt, in a way his other transformations never hurt. Muscle and bone tore and broke and twisted in an uncontrolled way.

His normal transformations were always controlled, painless.

The second time he changed into the Beast form, he was angry. Something had hurt Raven and Robin thought that Beast Boy was responsible. He’d never hurt Raven!

The third time he changed into the Beast form, he welcomed the rage, the power, the pain. Trigon wanted Raven, wanted the world. Beast Boy wouldn’t let Raven get hurt.
