Chapter Two: Just A Little Fun
THE NEXT day, Ruth was preparing a nice picnic basket in her London flat's kitchen. Just a few sandwhiches and ice tea; it was a 'thank you' for James and his sons taking care of Emily yesterday in the park.
Speaking of Ruth's litle niece, Emily had been searching her aunt's closet for something to wear to look like a pirate since the boys, James, and Emily agreed on playing 'Pirates'. Not to mention, she had kept chanting "I'm going to play 'Pirates'!" over and over snce yesterday. Actually, as Ruth was placing things into the picnic basket, the seven-year-old came skipping into the room wihile chanting her little one lines song. Her aunt glanced back at her and laughed at the little girl's outfit.
Emily was dressed in a normal dark blue dress, but had a large brown vest over it (no doubt Ruth's). Her curly hair was tucked into a red bandana and small scar was drawn on her face by lipstick. Also, all of her arms were covered in bracelets and few long necklaces hung from around her neck. Ruth wondered how the tyke hadn't fallen over from the weight, especially from the speed she was skipping.
"I assume you're excited to play with Mr. Barrie and his sons today, my little pirate?" Ruth grinned sweetly, placing her hands on her hips.
"Arg! Aye, me Aunty!" Emily nodded, using her best pirate voice. The brunette woman laughed.
"How about we find you an eye patch?" she suggested with a smirk.
"Aye! Aye!" her niece agreed. Laughing, Ruth allowed Emily to jump onto her back and they headed upstairs to Ruth's room. That's where Emily got most of her stuff anyway. Maybe, Ruth would dress up a little, too. Yes, she'd look foolish, but it was just to have a little fun.
"I can't find them, Uncle Jim." repsonded Jack grabbing a bandana for when they played 'Pirates'.
"Well, please do. I promised your grandmother you'd all be at least properly dressed on outtings." his guardian said, buttoning up his shirt. "And please tell your bothers to hurry up. I'll meet you all downstairs!"
"Okay!"
James smiled then, descended the stairs of the Llewellyn-Davies' household. He was about to grab his coat and put it on when he was stopped by the one person he had hoped wouldn't. "Mr. Barrie, exactly where do you plan on taking my grandson's today? I hope nowhere where they'll get filthy again." George, Peter, Michael, and Jack's grandmother Mrs. du Maurier.
The playwright had to resist rolling his dark orbs in front of Emma. He took a deep breath and faced her. "We are going to the park again today, Emma. Like we always do and yes, mostly likely they will get dirty." he grinned. "Yet, a little dirt never hurt anyone when you're enjoying yourself."
The gray-haired woman gave him a hard look, her hands firm on her hips. Her lips were pursed. "And whom will be there with you?"
"By what do you mean?"
"Michael kept saying something about you all playing with people named Emily and Ruth? Mind telling me who these women are?"
James laughed a bit making Emma glare. Clearing his throat, he continued to grin. "Well, Miss. Elliot is a woman, but Emily is far from it. She's no older than Peter."
"Miss. Elliot? As in Ruth Elliot?"
"Yes, that was her name."
"The actress?"
"She's an actress? I wasn't aware."
"Mr. Barrie," Emma started shocked. "Miss. Elliot is a famous stage actress in America from Broadway. She's come here to perform. Didn't you know?"
He shrugged. "It's news to me."
She shook her head. 'Unbelieveable.', she thought. She still wondered, even after two years, why her daughter had made that man her grandsons' co-guardian. "Well, what are your intentions with Miss. Elliot?"
James was a little aback by the question. "Excuse me?"
"What are your intentions with Miss. Elliot?"
"Emma, please. I just barely met the woman and her niece yesterday. All we're are going to do is just have a little bit of fun."
"Hm. Well, maybe you should invite them over for dinner. She's very well-known. It might do well for this family," she turned on her heel as her tea was ready. Then, she stopped and glanced back at James. "As long as we don't get too involved, hm, Mr. Barrie?"
He blinked slowly and just nodded. He didn't particularly want to answer such a question. She left the room and James exhaled deeply. 'That woman is completely daft.', he thought. Shortly, a smile returned to his face when the boys joined him, ready to go. They left for the park.
