AU. The characters of skip beat at high school. I messed with the ages a bit to make the story work so Ren is just a year older than Kyoko instead of four because it wouldn't have worked if he was that much older.

Er…this chapter is just an introduction to the main characters…I think I got the basics of their personalities down ok but they will be developing in future chapters so don't complain about the OOC-ness of them just yet please!

Disclaimer: I do not, nor have I ever owned, the characters of Skip Beat.

High School Daze
Chapter 1 - The Meeting
Kyoko hurried into the entrance of the school just as the first bell went. Her nose was stuck in a textbook, trying to desperately cram before the maths test first lesson.

"If X equals the sum amount of Y…Ow!" She was interrupted when she slammed into something warm and solid. Rubbing her forehead she looked up into what she had just walked into. Her face fell as she recognised the flash of blond hair. Sho Fuwa stood solidly in front of her, hands on hips, surrounded by his friends. An evil smirk played across his face.

"Well, well, well. If it isn't little Kyoko."

Kyoko could feel the blood drain from her face. Why on earth did he have to be here now? Passing students glanced curiously at the spectacle playing out before them but they didn't stop to interfere or to help.

"Hey Sho! Isn't that the girl who has the crush on you?"

Sho laughed at his friends comment. "Yeah. Pretty pathetic that she actually thought she had a chance!"

The blood rushed into Kyoko's face as she blushed furiously, blinking away angry tears at the thought that she was still the laughing stock of Sho's little group of friends.

"Aw look. You made her cry."

Kyoko opened her mouth to say something scathing but before the words had left her lips Sho interrupted her.

"Is that for the Maths test? Isn't it a closed book exam?" he mused looking at the open book in her hand.

Thrown slightly by the change in attitude she nodded her head before she realised what she was doing. Sho smiled sweetly at her and a shiver travelled up her spine. This wasn't good. His hand slammed down onto her maths book with a force that caused her to drop it onto the floor. It skidded away down the corridor throught the rapidly thinning crowd.

"It is now at least."

Sho's friends laughed cruelly, deliberatly walking on it as they made their way to their form room, the shrill ring of the second bell following them.

Kyoko blinked. She gritted her teeth to stop herself from yelling profanities after them. She really couldn't afford to get into trouble at this school. She winced slightly at the thought of the look her mother would give her if she brought home a letter from the Head Teacher.

Kyoko uncurled her trembling hands from the tight fists they had unconsciously formed. She let out a small defeated sigh. At least it wasn't that long until the summer holidays. Just a couple more weeks of taking Sho's idiocy, then six beautiful weeks of bliss.

Walking over to her book she picked it up and brushed off the dusty foot prints courtesy of Sho's friends. She looked down sadly at the ripped cover page and inwardly cursed her naivety of last year when she had built up enough courage to tell Sho that she really liked him. Of course he had laughed at her and within days her rejection had spread throughout school. Sho and his group of friends still made fun of her at every possible chance. Her hands tightened around the text book, knuckles turning white as she gripped it in anger. A dark, crackling aura swirled around her as remembered taunts filled her mind. How dare they make fun of her! Oh, what she would do to them if she ever saw them on the street.

The sound of someone clearing their throat snapped her out of her violent thoughts. She looked up, surprise written all over her face.

"Is there any particular reason why you're not in class?"

For the second time in so many minutes the blood drained from Kyoko's face. Ren Tsuruga stood in front of her. His eyebrow rose as he looked down into her face. Ren Tsuruga. The most popular boy in school and recently promoted to Prefect. He was also in the year above her. Kyoko's mind went blank as she tried furiously to think of a reason why he would be talking to her.

Ren's eyes narrowed while he lectured her. She stared at him dumbfounded , not taking in a word he was saying. It was then that she noticed the silence. Her eyes quickly scanned the empty hallway. Hadn't there been other people here just moments before? How long had she been standing here thinking? Ren carried on talking and she snapped her attention back to him just in time to catch the last of his sentence.

"…late, I'll have to report you. Please tell me your name."

Cold dread filled Kyoko's vein as she looked at her watch. The display read 9.15. A strangled cry of panic fought its way from the back of her throat. She ignored the look Ren gave her.

"Oh no." she breathed, frozen for a moment as she fought between collapsing and breaking out into hysterical laughter.

The end result was something in the range of hysterical panic.

"I-I'm late." Confirming it didn't help her to stop panicking "AH! I'm late! My test! I'm late for my TEST! What am I going to do?"

Ren didn't know if this question was directed at him or not so he didn't say anything at all. The girl was acting strangely and she had gone a weird shade of grey. To be honest Ren just wanted to leave her alone but he had a job to do.

"If you can just give me your name then you can go to your test."

Ren's voice snapped Kyoko out of her panic induced trance. He wanted her name so that he could report her. Something inside her screamed 'Run!' so she did. Remembering forgotten muscles she barrelled past Ren, shoving him out of her way and sprinted down the corridor, her bag and jacket flying behind her as she skidded around the corridor leaving in her wake a faint wail of "My test!"

Ren stood in shock, clutching his bruised ribs. What exactly had happened here? He hadn't even been able to get her name. He sighed wondering why he always got the weird ones and brushed off the idea of going after her to get her name so he could report her. He wanted to forget this as soon as he possible, though with bruised ribs he didn't think he would be able to do so anytime soon. He closed his eyes, collecting himself for a moment, then started on his way to his first lesson.

Hee! So what did you guys think?

To help make things clearer a little note on the school:

The school in this story is based on the English school system because I'm English and I don't know enough about other countries school systems to make this believable.

I set the characters in a 6th Form that's got a High School attached. High School in England runs from the ages of 11-16 and 6th Form is for 16-18. Students can either go to a 6th Form which is usually (but not always) attached to a High School or to Collage which is a separate institution for the same age group.

Hope that made sense. If it didn't then it doesn't really matter – I'm sure you can still make sense of the story anyway.
