A/N: Anyone else see a pattern here? Part 1 of...Four, maybe?

Twelve Children and Their Dreams
Or
What makes a Shinobi a Shinobi

1.) Naruto dreams of running with a Fox. Through endless fields and grasslands; through evergreen forests and hot, humid jungles he has never seen, he dreams of running across the ground as fast as he can for as long as he can, his feet stamping his marks into the earth in an outline of red fire that proclaims: I am here, I have been here, and I am alive.

He dreams of fighting, of biting and scratching and rolling around in the ground with a red-haired teenager who looks just like him but is not. He dreams of chasing this boy (or is it a girl?) as he runs, reaching for his (her) tails and nipping at his (her) heels, and then, he's flying, higher and higher and higher until it seems that the very Gods themselves are all around him, watching him soar and screaming for him to join them.

Here, in the sky, in the forest, with the red-haired boy, in the arms of the red-haired girl, instead of falling, instead of failing like everyone before him, Naruto dreams of two emerald eyes and a wide, Cheshire grin that accept him where everyone else has not and embraces the warmth they exclude with a smile.

Uzumaki Naruto has never had a brother or the reassurance of an adult saying "Yes, I will take care of this." and meaning it.

2.) Yamaneka Ino does not "dream", per se. Unlike her peers, her bloodline gives her control over every mental facet of her dreams, so even though she has lived through them Ino has never had a nightmare. When she sleeps, when she "dreams", Ino allows herself to see what she wants to see according to her state of mind -- blithe darkness when she should be alert, iconic happiness when she is depressed, or something ironic when she is mad.

Yet on those late nights when sleep comes all too suddenly, Ino dreams of mirrors and fairytales; of differing perspectives and viewpoints. She dreams dreams of strong princesses without strong princes, of monsters who want to be saved by their brothers and of the weak, overconfident men who talk and fuck faster than they can explain their mistakes. Ino dreams the dreams of a harsh reality and a fate she wants to avoid, and tries her damnedest to never have to face up to it.

Yamaneko Ino is not naive, but still strives to retain her youthful innocence.

3.) Sasuke has the same dream of Itachi killing his parents about as often as he has the same dream of a future all too likely to happen, and cannot tell which one is the greater of two evils.

In his dream, Sasuke is wearing a necklace of steel teeth that hangs from his neck like a noose and an ANBU mask bows in his grip from how tightly he holds it. He is following Naruto at a small distance as the blonde -- calm, confident and bedecked with the robes of his station -- ascend the tall steps of the Hokage's Tower, and even though he knows that part of him is mad at this, at still being behind Naruto when he should be leading the way, he is smiling a smile he hasn't seen himself wear in ages.

He isn't the only one, either. All around him, Konoha watches Naruto from their rooftop; cheering, laughing, and shouting his name to the heavens as Naruto smiles like the devil himself at sunrise. Sasuke's demeanor remains cold; patient and utterly professional. He stops halfway up the steps, his eyes remaining cast low to the ground as Naruto walks higher and higher separates them by steps that stand between them like miles.

It is here in his dream that Sasuke realizes that despite attaining all they wanted, Sasuke was still left looking at Naruto's back, in the end, and he was okay with that

Above all other things, Uchiha Sasuke wants nothing more out of life than to succeed.

4.) Most would think that a walking hive of insects would lack the capability to dream, but they would be wrong. The Aburame, before they were Insect-Nin, were shamans of a sort, and used both the bones of their dead, the skin of an insect, and the blood of their enemies to concoct a highly addictive hallucinogen that allowed them to think twice as fast than the average human.

Because of this, the Kage of old would come from far and wide to sequester the use of their most honored Seers, but it is not until a fire wipes out most of the clan and the Shodaime arrives to pick up the broken pieces that the Aburame stop looking outward for that which gives them strength and begin to focus inward.

When Shino dreams -- which is not often -- he dreams of a great, throbbing white light surrounded by darkness, and more often than not he will wake up screaming when the darkness, cold, meticulous and so obviously hungry, cuts into the bright light and devours it.

There is only one thing the Aburame fear, and it is both their greatest blessing and downfall.

5.) It is very hard for Rock Lee to actually find the time to get a good night's sleep and dream peacefully. Between the missions outside of the village that set him on edge and turn his dreams to rather long nervous naps and the sweet oblivion of sleeping in after a good day's workout, Lee dreams very, very little of anything of importance.

When he does dream, though, he dreams of an angry black shadow he cannot catch or wound and the inevitable battle that the two of them come to. The dream always ends with the shadow beating Lee into submission, and between this and his fantasies of a life with Sakura, when Lee wakes up he's caught between feeling guilty about going easy on the shadow because it has Naruto and Neji's face and smiling like a maniac because it's inspired him to train that much harder.

Rock Lee dreams of bettering himself.

6.) Sakura has never been one to like dreaming, but has always been the type of girl to love to fantasize. Whether this comes from the fact of how repressed she is sexually or the fact that she has never gotten what she's hoped for out of either of her teammates, she doesn't know; but when Sakura dreams, she dreams of unfulfilled needs; of the things left unsaid and the things said but unmeant between lovers, friends, and comrades, and imagines that if Team Seven couldn't function as a team, then at the very least they could find the solace they were desperately looking for in each others beds.

Haruno Sakura just wants Team Seven to work

7.) Shikamaru dreams of a world in which he is the sole survivor of a Holocaust. In his dream, no one bothers himm no one nags him, and he has all the time in the world to do whatever he pleases. His mother doesn't ask him to take out the trash, his father doesn't berate him for not training. Asuma stays his distance and focuses on his pupils who actually need to learn something, and Ino and Chouji aren't around to tell him how lazy he his. Naruto isn't there to draw in problems, Sasuke isn't there to cause them. Nothing exists, no one inhabits the planet but him, the clouds, and time, and everything is as idyllic as an empty forest at night.

These types of dreams sicken him, and every time he wakes up from one of them he has a bad taste in his mouth.

Nara Shikamaru wants peace, but doesn't want to lose everything to get it.

8.) Hinata dreams of violence; of caving in Hiashi's head and wiping the floor with Hanabi's skull while Neji slowly died from internal bleeding somewhere nearby. She dreams of staring into a mirror and screaming at her inadequacies; at her weight, her slowness, and the fact that unlike other girls no boy will ever compliment her on her eyes. Hinata's dreams are dreams borne of repression and a willingness to change but no outlet for it, and if it was not for his obsession with Uzumaki Naruto the Hyuuga clan would not existp after the Chuunin exams.

Hyuuga Hinata knows that you can only push something so much before it either breaks or fights back.

9.) Neji dreams of sunlight on a cloudless day; of things that make sense when you don't want them to and large, expansive Houses with many, many windows but no doors. He dreams of being locked in a room on a cloudy day and of the spaces between spaces; of the things normal men can't see and the things extraordinary men can.

Neji dreams of Naruto and everything he will come to be in his life; dreams of Sasuke and everything he will eventually throw away in his. He sees Hinata in his dreams, bright and unscarred by life, and then watches her slowly age into the role she is destined but not meant for.

Hyuuga Neji dreams of paths.

10.) Kiba dreams as an animal would dream -- self-indulgent and blissful. He dreams of running through dense, wet forest with his pack; dreams of unimaginably tall trees and thick, impossible to navigate woodlands where mist rolls across the ground like smog crawling above a city and the dark, heady scents of the woodlands burn their way through his nostrils and sear themselves into the pleasure center of his brain like the sweetest of intoxicants.

Kiba dreams of the warmth of his mother's fur and the sweetness of his first kill, of blood-feasts and blood-bonds and brothers not of blood but just as loved. He dreams of taking control of his life; or finding a mate and loving her a purely as an animal could love another animal, and in his most perfect of dreams Kiba sees himself howling to the sky and signaling his first Hunt and watches himself moving through the forest as if the underbrush parted in front of him like the legs of an overeager lover. When he wakes, as all dreamers invariably do, his stomach and his bed is still coated with his jism and his dick is still so hard it hurts, but the pain is worth it.

A taste of the life he's always wanted is better than never having it at all.

Kiba dreams of a life he cannot have.

11.) Chouji dreams of flying, of going up so high and so fast into the sky that he cannot breathe and the vastness of space becomes more reality than wish. He dreams of birds rising so high over the clouds that they appear to be stars, of climbing the tallest peaks and claiming them in his name so that no one else could. Chouji dreams of firsts, of glory and having his name carved into the centopath, because that is the only way that people will stand up and recognize him as more than one third of a threesome.

Chouji dreams of individualism. He dreams of people understanding that when he says that he is fat because he wants to be and not because he has to be that his words have meaning; that he is perfectly fine the way he is even though no one understand him because Chouji understands himself and that...that right there is saying something in a Village where everyone tries to be something they're not.

Chouji is Chouji. Everyone else can go fuck themselves.

12.) Tenten dreams in absolutes. She dreams of getting what she wants when she wants and how she wants, and has never compromised one of her goals for one of her beliefs. She is a stark, bleak contrast to every single one of her classmates in that she does not have a tragic past or a powerful bloodline, and because of this Tenten dreams the dreams of a megalomaniac -- blood, sweat, and tears for power no matter the cost.

Tenten dreams of things most men would kill for in a woman.
