Back in 2004, Duncan returned to the Bay at the time when Jade found out she was accidentally switched at birth. On the night of Robbie's 18th birthday, Duncan stole his car with Jade and Seb ended up on the bonnet and going over the cliff and ended up in a wheelchair. When coming off the drugs, Duncan realises what he has done, and considers his only way out. In the coming chapters, there will be slash involved with him and Robbie. Suggest that you don't read if you are opposed to that sort of thing. Enjoy.

There’s something I need to say, so please just sit back and listen. I know I don’t have the right to ask that you read this, dad, but please don’t go tearing it up before I have a chance to explain.

Since we always seems to argue whenever we talk, I feel that this is the only way I can really be open to you.

I know that since I returned here, things haven’t been so good. I know I haven’t made it easy for you, taking all my anger and frustration out on you dad. And for that, I am truly sorry.

Things just haven’t been the same since mom left us, and I know I didn’t help much by acting the way I did at the time. I just couldn’t cope. For sixteen years she’d always been there. Always been someone I could run to, talk to, just be there for me.

I don’t mean to leave you out of this, dad, believe me. It’s just we never really had the father-son relationship you always wanted. Mom was always there for me, not that you weren’t either, I just mean that cos you were always at work all the time or out on boat trips Mom was the one I was closest to.

And I know that I made things unbearable for you and the people here, even going so far as to turn my own friends against me, just so I could get out of Summer Bay and go live with auntie Morag in the city.

It was good at first. She let me do pretty much whatever I wanted. My new school was so much better than Summer Bay, and I made some friends, almost comparable to the ones I had here.

But I fell in with the wrong kind of people and I ended up doing some stuff that I really regret now. Smoking, drinking, eventually I turned to drugs, only because they were doing it, just to fit in.

And you know the result of that outcome. I stole Robbie Hunter’s car, drove mentally with Jade in the seat next to me, and with Seb on the bonnet. If I hadn’t been stoned, you know I would have never done that. But I was, and I did, and now I have to live with what I did to Seb for the rest of my life.

I am so sorry for what happened to him. I really didn’t mean for Seb to end up in a wheelchair. I swear, if I could take it back, I would.

And ever since then, you can’t even look at me. I guess I can’t blame you for that. It’s the same for everyone in town. Even when Mister Fisher came back. Even auntie Morag was the same. I really let her down, didn’t I?

I hope that you have read all of this dad. And please understand why I need to do this. I don’t regret what I’m about to do. I only wish it would be easier on you in the long run.

Again, dad, I’m really sorry.

Duncan.

He laid the letter folded on the table. He walked back to the door where he had left his bag. A small backpack, not much to show for someone’s existence.

He picked it up and swung it over his shoulder. He opened the door, and took one last look around. His eyes stopped on a photo frame in the corner next to his father’s bedroom. It was a photo of him, his mom and his dad, all sitting on the beach. He looked young there, and was maybe only about six or seven.

Things were happier then. Better.

He turned away, stepped out into the passageway that separates the flat from the Diner. He slowly closed the door, making sure not to slam it and wake his dad.

He passed through the kitchen area, and out into the main Diner. He unlocked the door and left, out into the night.

It must have been six o’clock when he reached the beach. It wasn’t dark as such, the earliest signs of the Sun was breaking. He hadn’t wanted to come to the beach. To him, it was a place of suffering. Over to the left was the cliffs where he drove Robbie Hunter’s car over the cliff, Seb and Jade still in the car when Duncan bailed out.

Behind him was the Surf Club, where he had stolen that car, where he had got completely wasted on drink and drugs, and begun the events which would lead to the whole town hating him.

He dropped his backpack down on the sand, and sat on it. He checked his watch. He looked up to the cliffs, and for a brief second, he could see the car going over the cliff again, Seb still hanging onto the front.

That’s where he would do it.

He got up and started walking forward, towards the ocean water in front of him. He just continued walking, straight into it, not even bothering that he was knee-deep in the water.

He just continued walking.

Waist-high now, and he fell forward when the water hit him. He didn’t care that he was soaking wet. He just lay there in the water, floating on his back, water everywhere around him, looking up at the sky, at the clouds.

After a few minutes, he got up out the water and went back to his backpack. He plummeted into the sand, and for the first time in a long time, he cried.

He didn’t even stop when his name was being called.

Robbie Hunter hated being up this early. To him, being up any time before school started was unnatural. But he had agreed to help Kim with his new training schedule, and was on his way to meet him at the pools. Around his neck, he had his towel. If it wasn’t scrumpled up, you could see that it had a large stylised ‘B’ on it.

But while he was walking along passed the Surf Club, he saw someone walk into the waters below. Still fully clothed, just lying in the water. Originally, he went closer, just to make sure that person was alright, but when he got closer, he wasn’t expecting that person to the one who had caused him so much trouble over the last few weeks.

“You okay, Duncan?” he said, crouching down.

Slowly Duncan turned to look at Robbie. Duncan’s eyes were red. They were hard not to notice.

“What do you want, Hunter?”

Robbie took the towel from around his neck and held it in front of him.

“You’re soaking wet. You must be freezin’.”

Duncan didn’t take the towel; he just left it there in Robbie’s hands. He quickly got to his feet with his backpack in his hands.

“Leave me alone.” He said, as he started walking away, slowly moving into jogging pace.

Robbie stood up and followed after him. He flung the towel back around his neck.

“Wait Duncan.”

Duncan didn’t even bother turning to face him. He just kept jogging away, his pace increasing to running speed. Robbie still followed a short distance behind, closing the space.

Quite quickly, Robbie was running along side him, and made it in front of Duncan.

“Leave me alone Hunter.” Duncan almost shouted.

Robbie was now running backwards, and held his hands up in front of him to stop Duncan. Eventually Duncan stopped.

“I’m only trying to help. You looked down, I was only seeing if you were okay.”

“Well I’m fine.” Duncan snapped back.

Robbie put his hands on Duncan’s shoulders, only for Duncan to shrug them off and drop his backpack and some of the contents fall out. Duncan bent down to start picking them up, and Robbie followed suit.

“I just wanna help Duncan.”

Robbie picked up the red jumper, and froze when he saw what was underneath. Duncan saw the look of terror on Robbie’s face, and grabbed the gun and flung it back into his pack.

“Stay away from me Hunter, I mean it.”

Duncan got up again and walked off in his original direction. Robbie just sat there on his knees, his eyes glinted with a few tears. He turned his head to see Duncan stroll slowly, and turn slightly to look back at him before starting to run again.

Suddenly, Robbie knew what he had to do.
