A/N: You read the idea of this fic in the summary, let’s get started!
Warnings: Some bad language, shounen-ai (AkuDemy, no Roxas, muahaha. Oh, don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Roxas, I just think that Demmy is the man for Axel) and other stuff I can’t name yet. It’s AU, so you don’t have to worry about spoilers or stuff like that, I suppose.
Disclaimer: I do not own Kingdom Hearts II. The characters, places etc etc belong to Square and Disney. The storyline is mine, though. So there!
Chapter One
A little merman was happily swimming in the ocean, every now and then jumping to break the surface of the water to catch a brief glimpse of the world above. He loved to spend the day away from the underwater city, since there was never nothing to do there. Besides school, of course.
He did know that being above the water was rather risky, though; he could be spotted by humans, caught and skinned... At least that was what the adults told them. He shuddered at the awful thought and dove again, noticing three dolphins swimming towards him. He smiled at the happy animals that were inviting him to play with them. He really shouldn’t... His mother would probably be mad, it was already late, but... just a little more time couldn’t hurt, right?
He decided that his mother couldn’t get any angrier than she already was, and so he played with the dolphins, jumping from the water along with them, laughing. He liked the dolphins, they were always playing, always so happy... He hadn’t asked why, though. Sometimes he wished that he had been born a dolphin... He spent a lot of time with the dolphins every day; they were more or less his only company, for almost everyone else in the Undersea Kingdom thought that he was annoying and too loud. So, maybe he was a little loud and liked to sing all the time, but so what?
He swam up to the surface, noticing that the sun was already starting to set. He bit his lower lip in concern. Oh, he would get grounded again, just great... He stuck his tongue out at the seagulls flying about, seeming to be mocking him with their high-pitched noises. Stupid birds... What did they know?
He was about to dive again, but something caught his eye and he turned to look over his shoulder. His eyes widened and he barely kept his jaw from dropping. Humans? Here, now!? He quickly swam behind a rock and peeked from behind it, carefully so that he wouldn’t be seen... The humans were so close... His heart was thumping loudly in his chest and he quickly ducked behind the rock as one of the humans on the rowing boat turned to look towards him.
“Something wrong, Axel?” asked one of the fishermen.
“Nah, just thought I saw something...” the man called Axel said with a shrug. “Dunno why I’m here though, I hate fishing,” he wrinkled his nose. “Besides, the smell is awful.”
The third man, who had been quiet this far, laughed. “You’re here simply because you need money, kid,” he said, still chuckling. “If I were you, I wouldn’t tell that to the captain, though. He’d throw you into the ocean.”
“The captain can shove his fuc—”
“Alright, we’re off!”
The merman could hear this ‘Axel’ mumbling some not-so-nice words under his breath as the rowing boat sailed further from him.
Oh, man, he had really, really seen humans! Without being caught, no less! Oh, his sister would die when he’d tell her! He smiled widely and dove, deciding to follow the humans for a while longer. He caught up with the rowing boat rather quickly and swam under it, wondering if there were any more of the humans...
He swam a little closer to the surface, and now he was able to see the three humans on the boat. One of them was a creepy-looking man with greyish hair an eyepatch over his right eye, and a bad-looking scar on the left side of his face, starting from his jaw and ending near his only good eye. The other man whose name he didn’t know was a large man with an angry look on his face and he had brown hair. Why did they look so scary...? Were all humans like that?
He found the third of the men rather fascinating, though, the one with the name ‘Axel’. He had fiery red hair that was sticking out in every possible direction, and he had these little marks under his eyes... And even though he was wearing a frown, Demyx thought that he looked really handsome. He flushed a little at his thoughts, and then realized that because he could see the humans, they could see him too, and so he decided to leave. His mother would be fuming by now...
“Demyx!”
The merman turned around and smiled a little sheepishly to his little sister who was swimming towards him, and angry look on her face. “Uh... Hi, Naminé...”
Naminé crossed her arms across her chest and frowned. “Where have you been, mother’s really angry with you!” she said, waiting for a good explanation. It wasn’t the first time Demyx had left without telling her or their mother anything, and although Demyx wasn’t one to get himself into trouble – much – he made them really worried by disappearing like that.
“I saw humans,” Demyx answered with a proud grin. His grin widened as Naminé’s jaw nearly dropped.
“You... didn’t!” Naminé exclaimed, but couldn’t keep the curiosity out of her voice. “What... what were they like?”
“You wish I told you!” Demyx grinned and quickly swam away from his sister. Oh, this would be such an advantage to him! He didn’t have to tell Naminé anything for free... He could make her do his share of housework, he knew she was so curious she’d surely do anything to get him to tell her about the humans!
“Hey!” Naminé shouted after Demyx and then swam after him. “That’s not fair! I wanna know!”
Demyx turned to look at his sister but kept swimming. “Hah! You’ll have to catch me first!” he laughed and turned around again, yelping when he felt his tail fin get caught in something. He wiggled it a little, realizing that it was stuck. “What the...?” he frowned. “Naminé, don’t come closer!” he shouted while trying to struggle against the invisible restrain, only to notice that he was stuck worse than before.
The mermaid stopped, a look of concern taking over her features. “D-Demyx!” she shouted as she saw that her brother was caught in a fishing net. “Stop moving, I-I’ll help you!”
“No!” Demyx shouted. “You’ll get stuck too, please Naminé, go get help!”
“B-But I can’t leave you!” Naminé argued. Oh, what to do, what to do...
“Please, just go! Go get Zexion!”
Naminé felt tears gather in her eyes as she turned around and began to swim as fast as she could. This wasn’t happening, this couldn’t be happening! She turned to look at her brother over her shoulder and gasped at the red tinge in the water floating around him. Demyx was bleeding...! “No!” she screamed as she saw the net being lifted, and her brother along with it. “Demyx!!” She started to swim back to Demyx, but by the time she got there, the net had already been lifted. “Demyx, no!” she screamed again, helplessly swimming in circles under the huge fishing boat. She wiped the tears in her eyes and looked up to the bottom of the boat. “Just wait, brother, I... I’ll get help!” she said aloud and began to swim towards the city as fast as she could. She had to find Zexion, he would know what to do!
