All I’ve Done
Summery: “Do not interfere with the lives of humans” was the golden rule in heaven. “NEVER use a Death Note to kill any human for any reason” was a shared rule amongst the angels and demons alike. If only L had obeyed those rules, perhaps then he could have spent his eternity watching over the lives of others as an angel rather than taking them as something significantly worse… AU.
Alert: Spoilers up through book seven (chapter 58) / episode 25. Other than that, it should be fine. Takes place about two years after said spoiler. More will be added later if they come up.
It was October 31st and Ryuk couldn’t feel more paranoid. Many humans believed that it was a myth that the gates of hell opened up to free any demons strong enough and willing to enter the human realm. The Shinigami, however, thought otherwise. Sure, Halloween had come and gone in the past with nothing relatively important happening. However, Ryuk had a bad feeling this Halloween, one worse than ever before…
“Did you hear a word I said?” asked a now rather annoyed Light. It seemed that the Shinigami had tuned out the Death Note owner.
“Um…” he started uncertainly. Light simply shook his head while looking down.
“I said that you can’t have any apples today.” He repeated. Ryuk remembered now! He knew there was a reason he’d turned his focus elsewhere…
“Because Misa is having a party today and has no clue when guests will start arriving.” Ryuk repeated what Light had said earlier in a bored tone. The Shinigami sighed. Misa was never any fun, but especially so when she was around other people. No apples and no one to talk to. He might as well follow Light. Come to think of it…
“Hey, Light.” The Shinigami called after him as he was heading out the door. Light paused, the only sign that he had heard Ryuk.
“Can’t I just follow you today? I mean, I don’t have to be with Misa all the time. Especially if she can’t use the Death Note anyway.” He asked. Light seemed to think this over before nodding.
“Alright. But don’t you dare even think about causing trouble…” he answered in a dangerous tone.
‘As if he can scare me…’ Ryuk thought. Light shot him one of the darkest glares he could collect.
‘…much.’ He added as an afterthought as he followed Light out the door.
‘Yet he can never find himself…’ Ryuk thought with a snicker. Back when L was around, things were interesting. Light actually had to think then. Now everyone just seemed to mindlessly go along with whatever Light said. It was almost as if the indifferent Shinigami missed the peculiar human.
‘Better not let myself start thinking like that or I’ll end up just like Rem…’ Ryuk shook himself from his thoughts.
“We’ll probably have better luck tomorrow, Light. Kira or no Kira, Halloween is still one of the biggest night of crimes.” Matsuda stated earning a slight glare from Light. Ryuk shivered. He had almost forgotten about it being Halloween. Almost. However, he decided it might be better to be with Light rather than Misa. Besides, Ryuk hated it when humans dressed up in silly costumes mimicking demons and such. The more he thought about it, the more he’d decided that humans deserved what they got on Halloween. Didn’t anyone ever wonder why there were so many murders come Halloween? Oh, well. No one was asking him, so there was no use on dwelling on such things. However, as it got darker outside, clouds began to form above, creating a dark, eerie feel to the atmosphere. Lightning absently slithered amongst the clouds followed lately by a low rumble. Ryuk thought about counting the seconds in between but decided it was useless. The lightning couldn’t hurt him anyway…
Then, it hit.
At exactly 9:36 the ground began to slightly rumble. The storm above grew utterly fierce and lightning seemed to strike at the building itself as if in a war. All electrical units over circuited causing many explosions throughout the building.
“Everyone, OUT!” Soichiro commanded as he grabbed some paperwork and headed to the exit. All followed him until Light had a realization;
‘The notebook!’ Light turned back and quickly made his way to the safe which contained his original Death Note. He quickly entered the combination and grabbed the book. But by the time he turned around, both he and Ryuk learned that he was already too late. The floor burst upwards and what looked like hordes of demons appeared. Light stammered back against a wall screaming.
“Ryuk!! What the hell is this?!” The boy screamed in utter horror. Ryuk, himself backed away against a wall. He knew that human weapons couldn’t hurt him, but he’d never heard anything about demons. As the evil spirits landed in front of Light, the mass murder found to his horror that he recognized some of the ones closer to the front of the pack.
‘Kurou Otoharada, The first person I killed. Taku Shibuimaru, The dude who was harassing that girl, my second victim. Osoreda... The man I used to find Raye Pember’s name… These are all criminals I’ve put to justice. These are all criminals I’ve killed!’ He realized in sheer terror.
“It is time for us to gain our revenge, Kira!” Kurou stated. Clawed hands and daggers were raised in a threateningly and Light closed his eyes. He didn’t feel any pain; however, he heard a crash, thump, and a scream. Light opened his eyes and stared in awe. Before him stood an angel, holding one of the demons by the throat. The angel skillfully snapped the demonic spirit’s neck, causing it to fade into nothingness. The angel was a male with dark hair and a confident stance. His halo glowed brightly, giving him a holy glow. Out from his bare back came a pair of large, white feathered wings; wings that were outstretched to protect Light. He was wearing gray/blue jeans. From a belt loop on his left side dangled a chain with a gold cross on the end. His curved yet strong build reminded Light of someone…
“I will not let you harm him.” A mono-toned voice deeper than Light’s growled. The young human gasped as the angel turned to face him. Dark gray eyes met Lights brown ones as the angel faintly smiled.
“R-Ryuzaki?!”
“Leave us, Angel! You are not his guardian! You have no place here!” one of the demons yelled. Ryuzaki grabbed the cross on his chain with his right hand and ripped it off. The charm instantly grew in size and became a sword. The bottom part to the cross turned into a deeply blue glowing blade. As Ryuzaki stood there poised, he was every bit the symbol of justice that the Shinigami remembered him to be. Ryuk would have laughed if he had been in a not so life threatening position.
“I beg to differ.” Ryuzaki boldly replied to the demons earlier statement. He swung his sword with skill and sliced through five demons. The evil spirits attentions were now focused on Ryuzaki, completely forgetting Light. The battle raged on as Ryuzaki was fiercely outnumbered.
“Yagami-kun! RUN!” The angel commanded. Light stared at him in disbelief. However, upon realizing how deadly serious his former rival was, Light ran. He ran as fast as he could, running for his life. A still rather spooked Shinigami flied along with him. He navigated through the flames and managed to escape the collapsing building. Upon reaching the outside, Light found that there were several fire trucks on sight trying to put out the flames. Rain poured down hard, leaving Light to be instantly soaked. The roof to the building exploded, but not due to any electrical surge. Light saw Ryuzaki flying towards the sky, followed by hundreds of demons.
“Ryuk! FOLLOW HIM!” Light screamed. The Shinigami obeyed, partially because he had been screamed at and partially because he, himself, was curious as to what was about to unfold. He flew up as fast as he could and quickly was able to catch up to and mix in with the demons.
‘Damn it! I need to go faster!’ Ryuzaki thought as he flew away from the demons as quickly as possible. One of the demons had destroyed his sword, and now he was utterly defenseless against the pursuing horde. He was ahead by about a yard or so, however, and all he needed to do was make it back to heaven to escape.
‘There it is! I’m almost there!’ the angel thought triumphantly as he saw a golden light break through the thick storm clouds. The golden gates of heaven were in his sight…
… and closing.
‘No… NO!’ Ryuzaki thought in a panic as he yet again picked up his pace. The gates fully closed just as he reached them. The frantic angel clung at the bars desperately.
“Don’t do this! Don’t do this to me!” he screamed in fear. He could hear the demons approaching and fast.
Ryuzaki had broken the golden rule of Heaven.
He had saved a human’s life.
The angel closed his eyes and bowed his head in defeat. Slowly he opened them. The fear was now gone and replaced with a stonic calm. As the demons grabbed hold of him, he spoke venomously at a god he wasn’t so sure would listen;
“That’s alright. I never believed in you anyway.”
Demons clawed at his wings and he began to fall. Faster and faster he plummeted towards the earth, all the while being clawed at and slashed at by the evil beasts who now wanted nothing more than for him to die. As he fell, his halo faded to nothingness. It was then that Ryuzaki knew that he was going to die. He stopped struggling and let the demons have their way with him. He predicted that he’d hit the ground in forty seconds or less anyway.
‘Forty seconds… how ironic…” The falling angel thought bitterly. He felt blood seeping from his wounds as torn feathers surrounded him. It was a massacre frenzy and the broken angel knew the outcome well.
‘All of this for you… Light…’ He thought just before he hit the ground.
THUD
There was complete silence as the demons stared at the angel’s broken form in twisted disbelief. Ryuzaki’s wings twitched as he tried to move them. A few white feathers lay scattered about and dark blood was pooling around the angel’s shoulders. The demons all screamed and disappeared. Ryuzaki could have sworn he’d seen Light’s Shinigami Ryuk fly away…
“Follow me…” Light immediately obeyed without a second thought. It wasn’t too long of a run before he reached Ryuzaki. Light gasped as he took the sight of the fallen angel’s form in. Slowly, he shook himself from his thoughts and knelt by him. Ryuk simply stood on the ground above Ryuzaki’s head. Its not like the Shinigami could do anything more, even if he’d wanted too.
“Ryuzaki…” Light whispered. The angel wanted to smile but couldn’t find it in him. His soul felt broken beyond repair. His eyes widened briefly as he looked at Light. Before Light could even consider the unusual action, Ryuzaki closed his eyes with a sigh.
‘This is it… What’ll happen to me now?’ Ryuzaki thought as he opened his eyes. Abruptly, both the angel and Shinigami heard a shuffling noise.
“There’s another human here…” Ryuk stated offhandedly. The elderly man stopped dead in his tracks as he saw Ryuzaki. The angel looked at Light again and suddenly noticed something with a gasp.
“Yagami-kun. Give me your Death Note.”
Light looked at Ryuzaki as if he was insane. The Death Note? How the hell would that help?! However, despite how stupid the request seemed, Light handed over the Death Note cautiously. For all he knew, Ryuzaki was going to destroy it. That didn’t matter. He’d still have Rem’s.
“Wanna see how a Shinigami is born, Ryuk?” the angel asked with a surprisingly playful tone.
“Huh?” Ryuk asked, though obviously intrigued.
‘Shinigami aren’t the only ones who can see names and lifespans…’ Ryuzaki thought as he looked to the elderly man. He dipped his finger in blood and began to write on one of the pages;
“Mitvic Tenncoi”
Forty seconds later, chains came up from the ground and bound the angel as the elderly man died. Ryuzaki’s wings were tucked underneath his back and the Death Note skidded into Lights lap. The shocked human jumped back in surprise, staggering away from Ryuzaki until he fell. Ryuk’s eyes widened as three Shinigami flew down. All three landed silently at Ryuzaki’s feet. Upon seeing the middle Shinigami, Ryuk instantly bowed. This Shinigami was huge. He had a skull as a face, half of which was stitched together. He was clad in torn robes and fine gold jewelry. He held a massive golden scythe that was adorned with every sort of gemstone imaginable. This, Ryuk knew, was the Shinigami King. To his left was an eyeless Shinigami. Upon his head was an Indian headband with a massive amount of large feathers. He had a hook as a right arm and was built rather mechanically looking. His mouth hung open to reveal a set of not-so-pointy looking teeth. To the Shinigami king’s right was a golden Shinigami who was covered in jewels. Ryuk recognized this Shinigami as Jastin the Jewel Skeleton.
“What’s this? An angel… a human soul…” The Shinigami King said in surprise. He looked down to the kneeling form of Ryuk.
“No other Shinigami is supposed to be privileged enough to see this…” He growled while staring at Ryuk. The kneeling Shinigami gulped as the King’s glare shifted to Light. His tone was one of disgust as he continued;
“…let alone a human.”
There was a silence as the Shinigami King sighed.
“Light Yagami has a Death Note in his possession. That means he’s safe, even from me since the rules state that I can not kill him. However, you, Ryuk, I can do something about.”
“Don’t.” Ryuzaki said as the shock of being chained slowly wore off. The Shinigami King looked to the fallen angel with clear annoyance.
“He had no part in this… no warning as to my intentions. Do not hold him accountable.”
The Shinigami King seemed to consider this. Everyone other than Light could hear people approaching the scene. Ryuk figured that it was probably the task force looking for Light.
“Alright… it seems you’re getting off easy yet again, Ryuk.” The Shinigami King stated, “This has only been done to an angel once before... It turned out alright then…” He hit the ground with his scythe and a dark ray of energy was sent through L. The angel screamed as his body was transformed. The gashes along his body all turned to scars. His pure white wings twitched in protest as the feathers were turned to black. Upon his wrists materialized bracelets adorn with black feathers. The cuff of the bracelets had sharp, silver metal spikes on them mildly reminding L of the sort of jewelry Misa may wear. His bare feet were covered in black wrappings that still exposed his toes. His hands were wrapped in a similar fashion, fingers remaining untouched. His jeans turned to a darker gray and the chain that had once held his cross disappeared and was replaced with a pouch to hold a Death Note, similar to Ryuk’s. With the transformation complete, the Shinigami King spoke;
“The Death Note you wrote in belongs to that human. Consider yourself attached to it.” L nodded. He had expected nothing less.
“Light! There you are!” Matsuda said as the task force stumbled upon the scene.
“Look!” Aizawa exclaimed as he pointed to L. All eyes were on him now, but the Shinigami King, knowing that he himself couldn’t be seen, ignored that fact.
“This is your notebook. Don’t let any humans touch it.” The King said as he tossed the book to L. Though L and Ryuk could see that the notebook was thrown, to everyone else it looked different. A blue light appeared above L and a notebook fell from it. The Death Note had a blue glow to it as he picked it up.
“Your name?” The Shinigami King asked.
“L” replied the new Shinigami. The King smiled as he and his two partners flew away. L looked straight at the task force.
“You all wanted me to change…” He started. The blue glow on the notebook slowly faded away.
“Heh. Well, you’re gonna hate what I’ve become.”
L forced his wings to expand. As he did so, the chains binding him shattered with a crash into a thousand pieces and the new Shinigami was set free. As everyone watched in shock, L spread out his wings to reveal a rather impressive wingspan, greater than Ryuk’s. Ryuk laughed as L flapped the tattered black feathered wings a few times before taking flight over the night time city. All that remained of the L they once knew was a single white feather that lay at Light’s feet…
To be continued…
