THE PERFECT MATCH
Chapter 1. Jo Stripe
Jo Stripe was a lovely girl, not slender, not fat, just a normal weighed and beautiful blond and blue-eyed American girl with nice legs and a strong temper. Some would say that she was a proud girl full of herself and unpolite, other would say she was shy, but Jo was none of this. She was a solitary and amiable 24 year's old young woman, she was passionate and loved the forest and the animals, loved to see them move around and live through the days. Coming from a poor and unhap-py family, she had'nt the oppor-tunity to ever realise her dream: study savage ani-mals in South Africa or in South America. She loved paleonthology too and bet-ween doing the laundry and make the dinner for herself while her mother was prencing around with her millionnaire boyfriend, she'd dream she was somewhere in a wild forest sketching a lion and learning how it lived. Jo had no boyfriend and never had one, it was'nt that she was afraid or something, she was just waiting for the right guy and did'nt feel the need to be with somebody right now! She already had her mother and her mother's house to take care of, that plus a man equal: big head-ache! She had all her life. Jo's father died of a cancer, her mother took out her best handkierchief the day he was buried, perfectly playing the crying widow, while Jo beside her was looking at her, a lethal glare in the eye. Her mother never cared for anything but her, when her father died she just said " Oh really?! " and called her rich lover to announce that now they could marry.
Jo's father had been the one to support Jo with her dreams, always pushing her and exhorting her to go far, he would always say, though she had no degree due to not enough money to pay schools that she was the best paleontologist of the world and she would believe it. He was her idol and the only joy of Jo's world, until that fatal day where he crumbled on the floor. Dead. All came crashing down, sorrow was eating her slowly as she felt she was left alone, as good as a garbage.
And now she was standing in the cimetery, while they were taking her father's bo-dy away from her forever. Not hearing the comforting word's of her parent's friends, she walked in the rain to her house, closing the door behind her, taking off her shoes, mechanically picking up the letters beside the door and taking them to her room. There, she wept until she had no tears, to change her ideas she read the letters and surprisingly found one for her.
She opened it and found a proposition of work for her, Juanito Sanchez, a well-known paleontologist wanted her to come in Puerto Rico to work on a digging site! Her dead neighbour Professeur Julian (who was an ancient biology's teacher in Oxbridge!) had told him that she was a good student and he had confidence in his opinion. Would she accept the offer, a plane ticket for Mexico was joined in the letter.
Jo stood dumbfounded, God bless Pr. Julian, she could go and accomplish her dream, become a professional, learn with the bests! The date on the ticket was for today at 8:00 she would have to pack quickly!
Her dad would be so proud.
" Oh dad! I feel better already!"
The sound of a closing door brought her to reality. Reminding her a big great pro-blem.
Laura . Her mother.
" Well... Here I go..."
She strolled to the kitchen, where her mother was making tea. The fat blond wo-man took in the appearance of her daughter and sighed disdainfully.
- I hate black, go and change you're depressing me!
At that point, the blood of Jo froze in her veins. She realized that it was hopeless, that her mother was bad and would never change... So she took a resolution, she turned her heels and got to her room, dressed in travel clothes and packed her things, never forgetting her father's picture.
She took her bag said adieu to everything she knew and got to the door.
Her hand was on the door handle when her mother's voice sounded coldly behind her...
- Where are you going?
Jo turned around and fixed the woman who shifted, surprised by the cold glare of her so-silent-and-obedient daughter.
- I'm leaving.
The woman blinked.
- You are what?
- I - AM - LEAVING!
She laughed and looked at her daughter, who was trying to keep herself from killing that monstrous mother.
- Don't be silly, there's my room to do and the dinner is not made.
- Well! It's time to learn mummy.
Jo turned the handle and opened the door.
- You can't do that to me!
- Why?
The woman trembled a little, surprised.
- Because... Because...
As she was getting passionate, Jo felt herself cool down, feeling pity towards the sad excuse of a woman before her.
Why getting angry with that?! That would make them alike.
- Because I tell you so!
Jo laughed.
- I am 24, Dad is dead and I've got a work, I can do whatever I want Mom! And you can't stop me!
Laura felt the strenght in her daughter's eyes and knew that she would never win again. But she could'nt help herself. The snake had to bite a last time.
- If you ever leave here, you won't ever come back and you're not my daughter anymore.
Jo got out of the house and before closing the door behind her, said what would be the last words she would say to her mother in all her life.
- You've never been a mother to me.
And she closed the door.
MEXICO - in a little two-place plane going to a Puerto Rico on the digging site of the Pr. Sanchez.
"I hope it will hold 'till we arrive..."
Right now, Jo was'nt the happiest of the girls. The plane she was in, was in a really uncertain shape and was making strange sounds. Clanking and all that.
"Maybe I should have asked to take a boat?!"
She was'nt easily frightened person, but there is time in life where you must feel fear.
Well, this was Jo's moment!
- How do you feel Signorità ? asked the pilot.
- Good! Are we not there yet? she lied, forcing herself to smile to the mexican.
- Not yet! But, see? We are flying over Isla Vida!
She looked through the window and saw a petite island covered by forest.
- Is there people living on it?
- No Signorità , it is owned by a old rich English man and nobody can go on it! People say it is a doomed place! he signed himself.
- Why? asked curiously Jo.
- The fishermen who have been there heard sounds! They said sounds that only the devils could do!
- How can you know it's not a trick?
- One of the fishermen was my brother-in-law, he said he heard roaring and whistling and booming.
Jo questionned herself on that "legend", what was the source of those sounds?
What or who?
A sudden turn woke her from her day-dreaming and she panicked.
- What are you doing?
- I'm taking a short cut, so we can arrive sooner, we'll go through the island.
- Are you sure it's a good idea?
The mexican laughed.
- Don't worry, 10 minutes before we arrive to the digging site.
Jo smiled nervously, a really bad feeling in her body.
As they were seeing past the green trees of the forest, the pilot turned to her and smiled.
- O. K Senorità ?
- LOOK OUT!!
The plane hit a tree, came bouncing from tree to tree until it crashed on the land, leaving its passagers knocked out.
ISLA VIDA
Pain.
Pain everywhere. Aching legs, aching hands, aching head. She moaned and opened groggily her eyes.
She was still in the plane.
The crash.
Black-out.
She tried to move, trying to discover broken bones and gashes.
She had nothing but bruises and grazes all over her face and arms, her pants and boots had protected her.
"Thanks dad, for making us buy army pants and shoes , without those I would be really in a bad shape!"
She unlocked her security belt, tried to stand out of the plane seat.
- Ignacio! Are you okay?
She got no answer, fear started to rise in her chest.
" I hope he's not dead! Oh God, please make him not dead!"
She rose painfully and got out of the plane whreck. The poor flying machine was ripped in two like some paper sheet. Pieces of metal and wings but no pilot!
She forced herself to relax and breathe calmly. Her legs were burning from the shocks they endured, she sat on the tropical muddy ground and began massaging her knees while taking in her surroundings.
Trees. Bushes.Trees.Mud.Sounds of birds, flowing water and leaf rustling.
"Well! You wanted adventure, now you got it! But where can be that damn Mexican!?"
She tought for herself while listening to any human presence possible.
Her legs were better now, so she decided to try to find the Mexican man.
- IGNACIO!... IGNACIO!... WHERE ARE YOU?
Silence. Then...
- HELP!... MADRE DE DIOS!... HEEEEELP!
And strange chirping and roaring.
Whitout thinking, Jo run through the bushes in the direction of the screams.
Abruptly, the screams stopped and Jo burst on a clearing to discover why...
Four velociraptors tearing apart the body of Ignacio, biting savagely through is belly and chest, eating happily.
The young woman stood there, frozen by the carnal show before her. Dinosaurs.
There were dinosaurs right before her.
Suddenly, one of the man-eater turned to her and fear took over fascination...
The raptor called over his comrades, chirping and snifing savagely... They rounded her and she began to move back slowly.
Meat...
Prey...
Food...
Soon, her back hit a tree and she saw low branches near her head. The head raptor began to gather himself ready to jump on her.
She took her courage in her hands and jumped on the branch as the raptors launched at her all claws out.
She climbed as fast as she could, until she was too high for them. They tried to jump but failed each time.
Tired of waiting, they snorted and got back to their first dinner, leaving a breathless Jo on her tree.
From above, she watched them finish the body of poor Ignacio, pilot of Puerto Rico.
Puerto rico - Digging site
Pr. Juanito Sanchez began to feel bad, it's been two hours the plane should have goten here. What happened?
His assistant ran to him:
- Pr. They left the airport but they lost contact with Ignacio, two hours ago! Nothing since then!
Sanchez took of his hat and whipped de sweat on his forehead.
- Madre de dios... Where are they?
