CHAPTER ONE

“Ouch. Mum,” Martha Mackenzie cried as she flinched away from her mothers touch. “Can you try not to prick me with that pin?” she growled.

Hope looked up at her daughter and laughed. “Perhaps if you stopped flitting around like a fairy; I’d be able to put the pin in place properly,” she pointed out.

Martha poked her tongue out at her mother, but then smiled sweetly. “Thanks for fixing my skirt up for me. It would be so horrid if I had to start the school year with a skirt that went to my knees,” she said.

“Oh, how embarrassing,” Hope said sarcastically. “Heaven forbid that the perverted boys at your school wouldn’t get to see your legs,” shook her head.

“Mum, stop it,” Martha giggled as she slipped out of her black school skirt. She then picked up her denim shorts and slid them on. “As if the boys would even dare anyway; they know that I’d give them a swift kick in the nuts if they did,” she exclaimed with a smirk.

“What about Joe?” Hope raised her eyebrow at Martha.

“He is my boyfriend mum,” Martha rolled her eyes as she searched the room for her boots. “But if you must know; the answer is no. He can look, but he can’t touch. Kisses and cuddles only; nothing more. Scouts honour,” she saluted her mother.

“Glad to hear,” Hope flicked at Martha’s nose. “Now get going. Your father and brother need help down in the back paddock. And then when you’re done; you can work on some of that beautiful music that you make,” she cupped her daughters cheek and kissed it.

“See ya,” Martha scooted out the back door and jumped into the truck. Starting it up, she made her way down to the paddock where she would be helping her dad and brother with the fences.

“I wish the summer holidays went for longer,” Martha whined at her brother. “I hate school and I really don’t want to go back tomorrow,” she said as she sat at the edge of the porch; swinging her legs too and fro.

Macca laughed. “Well, I hate to break it to you freckle’s, but you don’t have a choice,” he started. “But you should be happy for me; I’ve only got one year left,” he teased.

“Shut up,” Martha growled as she punched him in the arm

Macca rubbed at his arm, before pointing into the distance. “The new neighbours must be finally moving in,” he announced as a large removelist truck sped down the dirt road.

“We have new neighbours?” Martha was confused. She hadn’t even realized that the old farm next to theirs had been sold.

“Where have you been these last few weeks? In a crypt?” Macca scoffed at his younger sister. Sometimes she could be so clueless. “The Grey’s moved to Melbourne about two weeks ago and the farms been deserted since. But if that truck that just passed is anything to go by, then I’m saying that as of today; there’s some newbie’s in town,” he explained as he stood up and jumped down from the porch and started to stroll away.

“Where are you going?” Martha called out to him.

“I’m going to tell dad about the neighbours,” he called back.

“Whatever,” Martha muttered to herself as she picked up her guitar. Finally she was getting some alone time.

She walked out into the front yard and sat down in the soft grass; strumming at the strings softly. She truly felt at peace when she played her guitar. She loved writing music, playing and singing it. But it was something that she only done for herself and her family. It was something that she liked to keep to herself. She didn’t want to use her music for gain.

Feeling a slight breeze pick up, Martha smiled and placed her guitar on the grass. She stood and started to sway to the sound of the trees blowing in the wind. She singed softly to herself as she moved around on her feet. Without a care in the world, she allowed herself to get lost in the moment.

“Hey dad, the trucks here with our shit,” Jack Holden yelled back into the house. “And it’s about bloody time,” he then added quietly to himself.

“Thanks mate,” Tony called back to his son. “Hey, why don’t you and Luc go for a look around before we start unpacking everything,” he suggested as he popped his head out from behind a door.

“Or, how about you just unpack while we’re gone, and then me and Luc can come back to a fully refurbished home,” Jack joked with his father.

“Get out of here,” Tony laughed and pushed his son out the front door.

“Come on Luc, we’re going for a sneak peak,” Jack said as he took off down the driveway.

Lucas jumped up from his chair on the front porch and took off after Jack. “There is nothing to take a sneak peak at,” he complained. “The nearest neighbour is still like a two kilometer walk from here,” he quickly added.

Jack just laughed at his younger brother. Lucas wasn’t too happy about the big move; whereas Jack was thrilled. He was happy that they were getting a fresh start. It had been six months since his mother’s death and things were finally starting to go back to normal.

“Look, there’s a horse,” Lucas said as he pointed into a paddock. “Look, there’s another horse,” he said sarcastically.

“Lucas, just get over it,” Jack groaned.

“Jack, we’re in dullsville; population of ten,” Lucas cried out.

“Don’t whinge to me,” Jack started. “Whinge to that diary that you’ve been writing in,” he said as he noticed the neighbour’s farm in the distance.

From afar, he could see a figure standing in the front yard. As they walked closer, Jack could make out that it was a girl. She had long dark hair that was blowing around in the breeze.

“Can we go back now?” Lucas sulked from beside him.

But Jack wasn’t listening. He was too busy watching the brunette beauty. From where he stood, she looked like an angel. She didn’t seem to have a care in the world as she danced in the afternoon sun. He’d never seen such a vision.

“Dude, you look like a stalker,” Lucas interrupted his thoughts.

“Huh?” Jack pried his eyes away from the girl.

“Get a grip,” Lucas laughed at his brother. “Come on, lets go,” he started to drag Jack away.

Jack turned back for one last look, but was disappointed when he discovered that she was gone. Hopefully tomorrow at school; he’d see her again.
