Selena crept into a bedroom and closed the door silently. Her hair was light brown and slightly curling as it fell down to her hips. She held a small bundle pressed up against her chest while she shaked a small boy awake.

“Murtagh honey, wake up.” She whispered, holding the buddle of blankets with one hand.

The three year old boy lifted his head and blinked the sleep from his eyes. “Mummy? What is it?” His hair was dark brown and messy from sleep and his small hands rubbed his sleepy gray eyes.

“We’re leaving. Come, get your cloak.” Selena said gently, grabbing some of the child’s clothes from a nearby drawer and placing them in a pack. She pulled out his black cloak and knelt down in front of him to tie it around him.

“Where are we going Mummy? Where is Daddy?” Murtagh asked as she wrapped the cloak around him.

Selena stood up with his hand grasped in hers, her arm wrapped around the bundle, and the pack hanging from her back.

“We’re going to a safe place and Daddy can’t come with us.” She explained. “We’re going to play a little game, alright? It’s called the quiet game. Whoever can stay quiet the longest gets a prize!”

Murtagh looked at her in excitement. “Okay Mummy! I’ll be very quiet!” He clamped his mouth shut and looked at her with sparkling eyes.

Snow fell quickly through the night as Selena urged Murtagh on. She could tell the boy was freezing an exhausted, for they had been running for at least an hour. Her breath coming out in a fog and her pace was slowing rapidly.

“Mummy, I’m cold and sleepy.” Murtagh whimpered. His eyes were the only thing that could be seen due to the scarf wrapped tightly around his neck.

“I know sweetie. We’ll stop here.” Selena whispered, pulling him closer to her. She could see a barn nearby that they could sleep in. Her free arm scooped the child up and her legs began to trudge on.

Pushing the door open, Selena led her son into the barn. It smelled strongly of hay and the wind could be heard holing outside. She closed the door and pulled her hood down.

“Come Murtagh, let’s make you a bed.” Selena suggested, leading him over to the pile of hay. She fixed him a bed of hay and gave him her cloak to use as a blanket. “Goodnight my sweet prince.” Her lips laid a kiss on the drowsy child’s forehead before she curled up next to him with bundle still against her chest. She pulled the hood of the bundle down to reveal a small, blond headed baby with bright blue eyes.

“I’ll save you from this world by two princes.”
