I'm hoping some feedback on what I have so far will help kick my silly little ass into gear. Enjoy! PS: Based on a song by the wonderful Neon Blonde. Download it at w w w . mediafire . com ?1tze9oht9je PPS: This is sort of rough. I'll probably re-up a new version at some point.
Chapter One: Bullets and Flower Petals, Drifting
Oh, click, click, click, click, click! Bang, bang!
Went my gun in the convenience store clerk’s face.
“Give me all your fucking money!"
My voice quivered, my hands wavered.
A little kid got it in the face,
He didn't stand a chance!
A man with silvery amethyst hair stood on his balcony despite the rain, which blanketed the world in a moist layer, tears spilling from the darkened sky. His eyes traced along the city’s streets and sidewalks, its towering skyscrapers. It looked gritty; the rain pooled in the streets in dirty brown puddles, and the city held none of the glinting glamour of others. But it was enough.
It was his city, and its name was Twilight.
A slow, predatory smile spread on Xemnas’ lips, and his hands curled on the railing of his balcony. Xemnas belonged to a gang; better than that, he started the gang, brought it to power, made it everything it was—and now, he owned this city, this Twilight. The Nobodies held a very firm grasp over the city’s inner workings and its politics, even its law. The police didn’t move to stop any of the crimes they committed, because what was the point? Their crimes fueled the city, kept it afloat, and without them, there would be nothing. The only time the police did anything was when someone moved against the Nobodies, and only bribes would get them to do even that much.
At the top of the Nobodies were Xemnas and his closest, the Organization. They were a group of thirteen ruthless individuals, doing whatever it took to claw to the top. They were the foundation of the Nobodies, and no one went against them. It was obvious what happened when one did; there was a reason the thirteen was down to nine. One of the Organization’s members, Marluxia, and a small group of his followers, had tried to shift the power of the Organization, gain more for them.
They were dead.
They’d gone down in a hailstorm of bullets and no mercy, though they’d known and been friends with the other Organization members for years. If they were cruel enough to do that to their friends when challenged, what would they do to an actual enemy? No one dared fight back. Xemnas’ smile melted to a frown. Though, lately, a group had been gaining a following, nearly controlling all of the city’s worse sections, the slums. The Heartless. Their leading group was known as the Keyblades, a varied group of people. Xemnas had tried to wipe them out, but they’d proven surprisingly sufficient at defending themselves.
Most vexing for Xemnas was that he didn’t even know the identity of who started this movement against him. Their leader, his so called rival though he scoffed at the term, was a mysterious figure who no one seemed to know a thing about, other than the tattoo on his back, a large, stylized version of a key with a handle affixed to it; all of the Keyblades had this symbol, but none had that exact tattoo, on that exact spot. And that was all Xemnas knew. It wasn’t as if he could walk into the streets and demand people start lifting up their shirts, unfortunately. Xemnas smirked at the thought of this, chuckling to himself, and he stepped back from the edge of the balcony, running a hand through his hair, which was starting to get unpleasantly damp. He cocked his head to the side at the sound of the balcony door sliding open. A pair of hands slid around his midsection from behind, stroking at his torso.
“You’re getting all wet,” a smooth voice murmured, “Come in and we can shower.” Xemnas made a contented sigh and turned around to face Saïx, smirk widening. As he leaned and captured Saïx’s lips in a possessive kiss, thoughts of a hot, steamy shower in mind, Xemnas wondered if his life could possibly get any better than it was.
He also loved causing chaos with friends, of course. That was why he had Riku and Reno with him. They had the whole robbery business down to a formula. Reno got the money, Axel kept the innocents complacent, and Riku mainly stood around looking cool, but in case anything happened, he was ready. Reno sighed, gesturing his gun impatiently at the manager of the supermarket they were currently knocking over, who couldn’t get the safe open due to his trembling hands.
“We don’t have all day, old man,” Reno griped. Axel couldn’t help himself, and he laughed, as this threat only served to make the poor man’s hands shake harder.
“Alright, does anyone else here know the combination?” Axel asked, waving his own gun at the group of people they had herded into the office and told them to kneel faces towards the wall, hands behind their heads. A young blonde woman gave a frightened sob, unable to hold it in any longer, the tears streaming down her face.
“I do,” a younger man said in a flat voice, standing without being told, which made Axel raise an eyebrow. But he supposed it was all right, because he was getting bored, really, and wanted to leave. The older manager scrambled to the side, and the younger knelt in front of the safe, smoothly entering the combination and pulling open the door of the safe. As Reno reached forward, the man turned swiftly, backhanding Reno across the face, who fell back, cursing and rubbing at his nose, which felt broken. Axel and Reno turned their guns on him, and he gave them a sneer in response.
“I’m tired of you bastards! Every fucking month, it’s the same thing! You come in and you take all of our hard earned money! It’s not fair—” he was cut off by Reno’s vicious kick to his stomach, gagging and falling to his knees.
“The world’s not fair, kid, and that was for hitting me,” Reno spat out angrily, before glancing at Riku and Axel.
“Either of you want to take this?” he offered, anger dissipating quickly for his normal lighthearted mood.
“I will,” Riku said, standing up from his former position of leaning against the wall, arms crossed over his chest. He stalked over, calmly raising his gun and pressing it against the back of the man’s skull.
“Now, can everyone see clearly? This is what happens when you go against the Nobodies,” Axel drawled, as Riku pulled the trigger with a bang, a limp body slumping to the floor. Reno grabbed the money out of the safe, turning with a wave of goodbye with his gun.
“Pleasure doing business with you,” Axel smiled rather cheerily, following Reno out of the office, Riku quickly joining them.
“Well, that was fun!” Axel nearly laughed hysterically, adrenaline coursing through his veins.
“Mm. I’m going to go change now,” Riku said softly, glancing at his blood-splattered shirt.
“And then, let me guess, you’re going to go see him?” Axel said in a singsong voice, giving Reno a ‘he’s an idiot but we still love him’ look.
“If you must know,” Riku rolled his eyes, “Yes.” Axel grinned, hands busy dividing the money into equal shares.
“Go to him, Riku, he’s waiting!” Axel near yelled dramatically, handing Riku his share. Riku looked as though he was seconds away from killing Axel, too, but Riku decided against it, as he always did. Axel was a close friend, he was just a bit psychotic and annoying.
“Hello, Riku,” Sora said, closing the magazine he was reading. Riku walked up to the counter, leaning against it and eyes flicking over Sora briefly. Sora hadn’t changed since the last time Riku had seen him, which was yesterday. Same brown hair with lighter streaks naturally there, same sparking blue eyes, same adorable lips, cheeks—Riku tore his eyes away with a blush. He was smitten, to say the least. He’d met Sora a few months ago while downtown doing some Business (of the capital B sort) for Xemnas; namely, tracking down and killing a Heartless member who’d been foolish enough to let their name and whereabouts become known to Xemnas.
He spotted Sora as the boy was going into Bellis, and had instantly been intrigued, so he followed him into the shop and even bought some flowers from him. If the first glance hadn’t been enough, their first conversation completely enchanted Riku, and it was all downhill from there. He’d been one of those lovesick fools ever since. Though, unfortunately, he didn’t have much of a chance of ever being with Sora. As far as Riku could tell, he was straight, for one thing. For another, Sora didn’t know Riku was one of the famed Organization, and Riku planned on keeping it that way. Sora seemed so innocent, so naïve, how could Riku possibly let Sora know just what kind of a person he was?
Of course he could easily force Sora into going out with him, if Sora knew who he was, but he didn’t want to force Sora. He wanted to win Sora of his own merits. So here he was, three months later, and still making absolutely no headway, asides from becoming a rather close friend to Sora. Riku sighed, pulling up the stool Sora kept by the counter for Riku to sit on when he came visiting. Sora—who was used to Riku occasionally lapsing into thought and completely ignoring the world around him, had opened his magazine once more, but noticing that Riku had sat down, he glanced up.
“What’s that on your cheek?” Sora asked curiously, tilting his head to the side, blue eyes sparkling their hardest at Riku. Riku raised his eyebrows.
“What’s what?” he responded. Sora reached forward, scraping his nail flatly against a small spot on Riku’s cheek. When Sora pulled back, there was dried blood under his fingernail, and Riku blinked, cursing Axel for not telling him about that.
“Oh, yeah, I was painting earlier,” Riku lied easily with a smile that didn’t quite extend to his eyes.
“Oh, alright!” Sora smiled back, eyes flicking down to the magazine. He began telling Riku some of the latest celebrity gossip, and as Riku absentmindedly rubbed a finger along the spot Sora had scraped the dead manager’s blood from, his smile never faltered.
