Chapter One – Moving Out

"Hey Johnny, do you want to-"Chris Kapahala stopped as he stared at his 18-year-old nephew. Johnny Kapahala was busy packing a suitcase. "What are you doing?"

"I'm packing" Johnny replied as if it were obvious.

"I know you're packing, but why are you packing, I thought we were going to surfing, you were going to teach me"

"I'm packing to go off to college, Chris, we talked about this" Johnny replied with a patient sigh.

"I know, but I thought you were leaving later in the summer" Chris replied in a quiet voice.

"Well, Val, Julius and I decided to go a little bit early, to check out some stuff on the way" Johnny said defensively. Chris glared and crossed his arms.

"Well, that makes sense" he said with a glare. Johnny looked at him, taken aback with the glare on Chris' face.

"What makes sense?" Johnny asked confused.

"The only reason you want to leave early is to hang out with your girlfriend and best friend and leave me behind. And forget all about me" Chris replied.

"No, Chris, that's not it. I-"

"Forget it, Johnny." Chris spat angrily. "I hope you have fun"

With that, Chris turned and stomped out of the house.

-

"Please, don't leave us! How are we going to survive?" Sydney Jackson cried as he held onto his brother's leg.

"Stop being so overly dramatic, Syd" Julius Jackson said as he reached down and pulled his brother to his feet. Sydney pouted. "Besides, you're going to stay with the Kapahalas until I come back for break and get you guys settled"

"But do you have to leave so soon?" Noah asked as she handed Sydney a teddy ear, which he grabbed and hugged tightly, as Julius gave a sigh of relief.

"Unfortunately, I do have to go early" Julius replied as he grabbed the keys to the car. "But, I'll give you a ride over to the Kapahalas' house."

"All right" Rhuben sighed as she dragged a suitcase from a bedroom, Patrick walked out of the bedroom behind her. "Patrick, what'd you put in here?"

"My shoes, clothes, books-"he listed off.

"YOU'RE ONLY SUPPOSED TO PUT CLOTHES IN HERE YOU IDIOT!" Riley yelled as she struggled to bring out another suitcase. Patrick stuck his tongue out at her.

"Guys, stop arguing and get in the car" Julius said with a patient smile.

"I got shotgun!" Sydney shouted and sprinted towards the car as fast as he could. Riley, Rhuben, Patrick, and Noah ran after him, yelling that he was a cheater.

"I'm going to miss that" Julius said to himself as he followed them out to the car.

-

"Hey Chris" Rhuben greeted her friend as the three of them squeezed onto the wooden swing that was in front of the Kapahalas' house. Patrick, Noah, and Sydney were sitting at their feet.

"Hey" Chris muttered, watching Johnny, Julius, and Val pack their things into Julius' mini van.

"You sad about him leaving too?" Riley asked.

"More of mad, actually" Chris replied.

"I know, they weren't supposed to leave until the end of the summer, but they're leaving earlier then expected" Noah agreed, bringing his knees to his chest and wrapped his arms around them.

"Worst thing is, now he's going to miss my birthday. And he's the one that always makes it special" Chris said, slowly pushing the swing back and forth.

"You sound gay" Patrick teased. "Ow!" he cried when Riley and Rhuben kicked him in the back. Christ gave a small smile that was directed towards Riley.

"Trust me, I'm not gay" he said with a small chuckle.

"Ooh" Sydney said in a teasing voice. He started to sing a song, but changed the words a little bit. "Riley and Chris, sitting on a swing. K-I-S-S-I-N-G! First comes love! Then comes marriage! Then comes a baby in a baby carriage! Teach them how to walk, teach them how to swim! Chris and Riley just had twins!"

Patrick, Noah, and Sydney laughed as Chris' and Riley's cheeks turned red.

"Chris, guys, come say goodbye!" Melanie, Chris' mother called. The kids got up and walked down the driveway to hug their nephew, brother, and friend goodbye.

"Do you really have to leave?" Sydney asked again.

"Don't worry Sydney, we'll be back soon" Val said as she gave him a hug and a kiss on the cheek.

"Bye Julius thanks for all of your help with dad" Riley whispered as she and Rhuben hugged their oldest brother.

"You're welcome, but now its time for you two to take care of our brothers" Julius whispered back. "Be careful"

"Always" Riley and Rhuben replied with a smile as they stepped back with Chris at their side.

"I'm really going to miss you, Chris" Johnny said, shrugging. Chris looked up at him, through squinted eyes, his hands in his pockets.

"Yeah. Well" Chris shrugged back, looking at the ground.

"And because we'll be missing your birthday, we got you this" Johnny said as he pulled a new dirt board out of the back of Julius' mini van. Chris gave a sad smile.

"That's not fair" he said and hugged his nephew. "Thank you" he said and hugged his nephew tightly.

"You're welcome" Johnny replied.

"Hey guys, we gotta go now if we want to beat the traffic" Val said, looking at her watch. Johnny and Julius nodded, said goodbye to their families one more time and then got into the mini van and drove out of sight…
