Sami couldn't believe what had just happened. EJ had promised to let her go and let her have her family with Lucas. He was willing to settle for a part in their children's lives. And he had said he was sorry. This was great news and Sami couldn't wait to tell Lucas.

That hadn't been the reaction Sami had expected. After hearing what EJ had had to say Lucas had sulked and stormed out but not before letting her know what he thought about trusting in a DiMera. Lucas wanted her to fight for custody but he hadn't said anything about the reason why. He hadn't said anything about fighting for what was best for the babies.

EJ kept his word and his distance. It was impossible for Sami to bump into him accidentally even if she had wanted to. And that's not to say that she wanted to see EJ. Instead of meeting him Sami had to endure listening others talk about him. Her father openly complimented the young DiMera for helping them to get Andre behind bars and her uncle Bo was starting to like the man as well. And John had softened after finding out exactly all the things EJ had gone through. He had been lied to just like everyone else. Even Steve started remembering good things about him. EJ had saved Steve's live on more than one occasion and ultimately he was responsible for Steve's reunion with his family.

Her due date was getting closer. Sami knew EJ would be at the hospital but he wouldn't be with her. EJ would only be there to see the babies once they were born and for some reason that thought made Sami choke. Lucas was relentless about the fight which Sami wanted to avoid.

It was a beautiful day. Sami was just about to go outside for a moment to enjoy the rays of the sun when the phone rang. She picked it up and heard one word, one word only: ”Samantha?” She almost dropped the phone as she felt a sharp pain. Sami gathered herself and uttered the words: ”EJ. The babies are coming you need to get to the hospital.” His reply made her feel uneasy: ”Samantha, I'm so sorry. I can't make it. Go now!”

Hours later Sami was the mother of beautiful twin girl and a boy. She asked to see them and when Lucas went to ask the nurse to help John and Marlena came in. ”Has EJ been here to see the babies?” Sami asked and saw something disturbing. ”What are you hiding from me?” Marlena and John glanced each other before Marlena sat next to her daughter and said: ”There's been an incident.” Sami looked at her in shock and asked: ”What kind of an incident?” John stepped closer and grabbed Sami's hand. He squeezed it tight as he said: ”EJ was doing me and the ISA a favour. He was deep undercover when he went missing. I got the message this morning. Samantha Gene, all they found was a pool of blood. It's been tested for DNA right now but it doesn't look good. EJ is dead.”

Sami gazed upon her beautiful, now fatherless children. Her thoughts wondered back to the moment she had last seen him and she could again hear the words he had said that day: ”What I want most is for us to be friends.-- It looks like this is the best I can get, so I guess I’ll just have to make peace with that and your marriage.-- We need to sort out the custody, what’s best for the children and then I’ll leave you and Lucas alone.” The choking feeling had returned as Sami finally realized that she had been waiting for him to break that promise. As the first tear fell she wished he hadn't made that promise in the first place. EJ had given her what she wanted, willingly, and now she would forever damn him for it.
